Apparently parts of Joplin, MO are simply gone after a very strong tornado went through the town. Apparently this has also hindered the search and rescue as the fire department took a direct hit and a hospital nearby had some damage.

And what's worse it appears this weather pattern is going to stick around for the entire week.

EDIT: wow, the destruction of Joplin is very very severe.

That's a hospital in the background. There are reports of people being sucked out of the windows. Also there are reports of a WalMart being completely destroyed. Not good.

Lightning like crazy around here, looks like a tornado-producing cell is likely to pass right over. Hopefully it doesn't drop one on us. Satellite is out and unfortunately I can't get a view of the storm around our apartments without stepping out into it.

Now it is dropping a lot of hail...hope my car windows don't get blown out.

Okay, I think my place is out of the tornado section of the cell. The sirens did go off a few minutes before it started getting bad, but I don't believe anything touched down around town. Still pouring and shooting some impressive lightning, but shouldn't have to worry about a tornado for the rest of it. Of course I was stationed by a window holding my laptop in one hand refreshing the local radar and other weather sites while I watched it blow through. I'm one of those guys who wishes he had the money and skills to really chase storms.

Looks like it's about to slam Nerk in about fifteen min. Looks nasty. Was there hail? High winds?

No hail, high winds. Very high winds. The only way to describe the lightning would be "fucking crazy." If you have a safe place to watch the lightning, it's worth it..

This is the Bucky Katt of storms. It'll last about three minutes and scare the shit out of you in the process.

If it is a part of the same system that slammed my town, yeah, really high winds and some hail. The biggest I saw was just under golf ball sized, and most were dime-sized. The wind was strong enough at one point where you could see the airflow (with assistance of the rain) over the roof of the building next to me. I was really expecting to see some shingles come off. Quite a lightning show as well.

Saw, I have some family in the Warren area (Champion, to be exact). Appreciate the notice on that.

Sounds like the storm that just came through, minus the hail. Glad we didn't get any of that. The rain was going across the street upwards at one point...

At that point (watching the airflow become visible) I seriously thought that there might be a tornado coming out of my line of sight from the west, so I was ready to bolt into my closet and hope for the best. The only thing I can compare that to was the tropical storm that nicked Orlando while I was down there. Rain gauge on one of my mom's friends from work read 3.1" after the worst of the storm, and rain was still falling.

Looks like they're gearing up for some major storms just south of us tonight in Kansas and Oklahoma, then the system moves up to Nebraska tomorrow.

We get this stuff every year. Doesn't make it any easier to deal with.
