How Old Were You When You Moved Out?

How old was everyone when they moved out of their parents' house? I moved out at 18 to start college, moved back in the summer between undergrad and grad school, and have been on my own ever since.

Part of the reason I am asking is there seems to be a lot of post-18 year olds still living with their parents in my neighborhood. My next door neighbor's 27 year old still lives at home. He has a new motorcycle, BMW, another car, full time job and still lives with mommy and daddy. Granted, he doesn't have to do a thing around the house, so why not. Across the street we have the recent divorcee whose 19 year old daughter and her boyfriend are living with him. Then, at either end of my block I have more young men in their early 20's, working full time, owners of new cars, still living with their parents. I just do not get it. I wanted to get out, be on my own, and start my own life. I've told my wife we have to get out of this neighborhood before our boys think they will be living with us forever.

I moved out for good when I was 20 and I am 23 now. However, the first time I moved out I was 17 and needless to say, that didn't last long and then I moved out for about a year when I was 18 but had to move back home because I lost my job.

Sounds familiar, exact same thing happened to me.

I just slept at my dad's, with my wife
You slept with your wife, at your dads? That had to be uncomfortable :)

I am still sucking on the parental teat at age 24, but I am still in school...College that is....Would love to be on my own right now but I'm still a broke ass bartender and server at a local restaurant....Can't wait to finish school...Both of my brothers have recently bought houses within the past two years...So I guess I am next in line...Besides, my 27 year old brother just moved out of our house and he has been teaching for over 5 years....He just liked living at home with mom and dad....

18... left for 1 semester of school and then moved back for about two months. Moved out again to live with my fiancee (now wife). We lived with them for a month and a half when we first moved down here last year.. that was strange but they liked having the kids around. My brother is 26 and he is still living with them... he now says he is going back to school and willl live with them for 3 or 4 more years. I'm not sure why my parents allow him to do it... maybe becuase he's the baby of the family.

Left @ 18..came home that 1st summer but out for good after that.
Same here. That was the only summer I came home and was definately the last. Finding a job proved to be impossible in Tuscarawas County. All my friends from High School who attended schools on a semester schedule, had jobs back in May. By the beggining of July, I couldn't wait to head back to Columbus. That entire summer was wasted on cable television and rides on my dad's Honda scooter unbeknownst to him.

Depends on how you define moved out.
Starting the summer before my senior year I only came home to change clothes. My father was in AZ while the family was in OH waiting to move west. For awhile I was going to live with my football coach or my best friends dad, which is where I spent most of the time anyway.

I got a job after football season my senior year and then never came home. I ended up living with my grandma since she was closer to where I worked.

My parents moved to AZ, without me.:)

During college I was in and out of dorms, girlfriends homes, corporate apartments and my grandma's. I ended up staying with with my grandma even after I graduated from college. It was free and clean and safe. I helped her out financially and took care of the around the house work she could not do. I think I moved south less than two years after graduating.

The weird thing was I never officially had a home after college for 8 years. I always traveled and the address on my drivers license and bank was the office.

My wife tells our kids that they can never leave! I guess that is my hint to move on once they graduate but I'll be too damn old.

At home during the summers in college, save for the one I got kicked out for dating a Mormon. Then, jumped on a train and went west for a year (two small suitcases, no job, no car, no plans - what a blast). Went back home to finish grad school without having to take out loans. The day I finished my last class, headed west again - still no plans, but with a car.

Skipped both graduation ceremonies because I got antsy to be traveling.

Left for school when I was 18, went back for the summers till the end of my junior year. I had to since I lived in the dorms. Left for good at the start of my senior year when I got my own apartment.
