Sounds to me like someone was in band and didn't get a Varsity letter.
I was in band one year in jr high, and didn't like it, and never went back. However I found the dedication and sacrifice of the band members admirable (all summer long for all members & the drum core would practice basically every day).

I thought many took it too far and wanted no part in it, but I wouldn't dream of mocking their sacrifice by equating it to chronic masturbation.

thump, I'm thinking his roommate peed on him or something.

Why are you so bitter about this?

And no, taking 3 and a half hours to find your pecker isn't sacrifice.

From what i have picked up over the time is vr is one of those people who think it's cool not to be cool. You know the whole I'm cool because I'm anti-establishment.

As far as teh band or any band. It is a hell of a time commitment and anyone who doesn't think so has never been involved or doesn't know someone who is.

I was never in the marching band, but have had several people I have known over the years who have been. The marching that is done is planned out to a t. Exactly where and when you should be there. Much like a football play you have a spot that you should be in on every play and a point in which you need to hit percisly for a play to work right.

The people in OSU's marching band are some of the coolest people you will ever meet, and some of the parties I have seen them throw they could probally compete wit most of the frats.

Basicly vr you are doing a good job stirring the pot, now go back to your little anti esablishment meeting, put on your birkenstocks, and sit around and tell you buddies how messed up the world is, but how you don't care....cause you are to cool to care.

So they beat their drums every day?

In high school, I played football, and my girlfriend was in the band. I think she practiced more than I did. Anyone that thinks that the band people are wusses, knows absolutely nothing about it.

She worked her ass off. And it was a very fine ass, I may add.

I lettered 2 years at OLB. She actually got a band letter. I thought that was kind of strange.

I'll tell you one thing, the cheerleaders put in about 1/100 the time the band members do.

Again I was never in band but wouldn't put anyone down who was in it b/c it's a big time sacrifice as well.

A little overboard, but being a band member for 7 years, I know what band members put in for practice. Although my school didn't practice as much because we were concert oriented and not marching oriented, I know countless band directors across the state who work their kids for a good 3-4 hours a day and that's during the school year.

Anyone who thinks that band members don't work as hard as other letter winners do have their head up their ass for sure.

That's what I'm basing this off of, I teach in Grove City and they have one of the best bands around. Our school schedule is based around when the band teachers can get to our school to teach it.

Needless to say that leads to a little resentment by other staff members.

BTW, I lettered in golf as well and offer no apologies.

George Edge is an amazing director Thump. Grove City has had one of the top programs in the country for some time. I went to gahanna, so I had Jeff Shellhammer and we were always second in the area to you guys. Too bad your district has split yet again because it's giving George fits.

Oh btw, my father beat out George for OMEA district president about 8 years ago

...if being captain of your high school debate team, going to Ohio State and getting your B.A. in English, getting a rat race job to pay the bills while you teach SAT prep classes and try to find time to get drunk, watch sports and screw is "anti-establishment", then call me Che Guevara.

The only things you managed to find the mark on were (1) I'm a pathological pot-stirrer, (2) band is a major time commitment, and (3) I don't really care how "messed up the world is." Not because I'm "to cool to care" (nice spelling, by the way), but rather because I know that I'm more or less powerless to do anything about it. Shit, if I can't even convince people that marching band - for all the hard work that people put into it - is staggeringly homosexual, what chance do I have to change anything else?

hey, 2 pennies:

band at my high school is for losers. there's no time involved, and they suck. they "march", if by march you mean they walk around not really forming anything. they play stupid songs at inopportune times.

nobody letters in band at my school.....and at my school they changed the rules so everybody who participates gets a letter.

we also don't have a golf team, because it's not a sport. but if you want to go to golf tournaments by yourself and represent my school, you will get a letter :p

What a train wreck of a thread--the fact that I'm contributing should tell you a lot about my character (perverse), huh?

I was in band in high school. We only worked an hour or so every day, but were decent for all that. I always thought band was fun, and it got me into the footbal games for free (especially good after my knees got too fucked up to actually play football anymore). I also played in OSU's athletic (translation: shitty) band frosh year because, again, free admission to sporting events (not to mention good seats). I never thought the fact that I was in the band made me cool, and couldn't give two shits about anyone who thought it made me uncool. I enjoy playing music. The more difficult the piece, the more fun it is, and the better you feel when it comes together.

I also enjoyed playing football, running track/cross country, being on the school's academic team, and taking part in about a dozen or so other organizations. Some were extremely nerdy, and others less so. The one thing I learned spending so many hours with such diverse groups? Don't categorize people. It's lazy, stupid thinking, and quite often you'll be surprised at what you miss.

Oh, I ended up with 3 track letters and 1 cross country--got that one for being a captain, not for being fast, or a good runner :)
