i also have an academic letter, its the only letter i have as of right now. I was out of line on the above comments, but what is even more frustrating is how at my school they give letters for choir,Forensics(which is like debate), and Drama. I believe that shouldnt be happening
I appreciate your apology, but how is choir any different from band? I know plenty choirs who put in heavy hours as well. I know debate teams that travel to various locations and are put on the spot to defend themselves intelligently. This seems to be a double standard to me.

yea i guess it is, but at my school the letter jacket, and being a letter winner is being tarnished. For the fact that these letters arew being handed out to anyone who really wants. You can buy a 400 dollar jacket and put academics on the back of it. That i think just takes away from the hard work athletes and band members put into earning there letter and there jacket

Or look at it as kids who have pride in their school...

School pride is becoming alarmingly rare anymore.

I've seen plenty of schools that give letters for various non-athletic activities. I think that is great as it gives every kid a chance to find their niche. However, many of those schools have separate jacket styles for kids only involved in one or the other...

That would be the ideal solution... differentiate between a Varsity jacket and a letterman's jacket.

but grad...if you saw some of these kids youd be certain it wasnt for the school pride

Why? Because they don't fit your interpretation of "normal?"

About 15 years ago, I would bet I would have felt the same way you do...but, that saying you keep hearing about getting wiser and more tolerant with age, well it is generally true.

No big deal really, but in someone's world, those kids are cool and you are the stereotype to them.

And I thought the same way you did in high school, because I didn't buy a jacket to put my band letters on. If I had owned a jacket, I would have only put my golf letters on it.

That being said, our letters were distinguishable between academic and varsity sport letters, and we could usually tell the difference in stature between the academic letter holder and varsity letter holder.
