This was a non-issue at my high school. Athletic letters were 'standard', meaning the body of the letter was in the school's primary color, the border in the secondary. Academic letters were inversed.

Clear distinction between the two, but still recognizing both. I always thought it a fair system.

There were no band letters. There might have been, but we'd build a bonfire out of the bandies every Fall.

Sadly, that's not true at all. Our HS band (Mt. Vernon, for those of you in the DC area) was actually a pretty big deal (but just to them). They swept some St. Petersberg all-state competition one year.

Believe me when I tell you that I would not know any of this had Jo/longwoodbuck not been in it. Back then, I only cared about sleep, sex, lacrosse, and food/drink. Pretty much in that order.

Actually, toss lacrosse, and I haven't changed much with age, I suppose.

i've never heard of academic letters. you guys went to stupid schools and it makes you all stupid for going to them. except of course if you got academic letters. then i guess that makes you smart.

The sport/not a sport argument always got me in high school- I lettered for 4 years on the swimming team. We got most of our flack from the wrestlers, because our seasons were the same time of year. They always argued that swimming wasn't a sport and that we were pussies.

We actually decided to settle it one year. We'd each participate in something the others did, but not the sport itself (so no swimming races or wrestling matches). We had them play water polo against us, and we kicked their asses. Then they had us try running & weightlifting, which was stupid because we were very well conditioned from an endurance/cardio standpoint, and while we weren't as strong as they were we didn't wear out in the weight room either. After that they left us alone.

Where we(Thump, Ginn & Juice) went to school I cant remember 1 band member who I wanted to hang out with. I cant even recall one name....help??????? I assume they put in a lot of time, but who knows and who cares.....dumbest thread ever.

This thread has everything...debate, insults, comedy and even a "After School Special" thanks to Thump (pretty depressing story)

And since all of the cool kids are doing it:

3 Football
3 Baseball
3 Basketball
and even a couple academic letters (mostly b/c I copied off Thump and some hot chick)
