Brewtus knows his stuff!

I'd love to throw back a few cold ones with you some day, buddy :)
If you're buying, I'll be there.

I guess you could say that beer is somewhat of an obsession for me. Not only do I make it myself (I'm a homebrewer), but I also have a small minority interest in a couple brewpubs near me (mostly just to get myself in the brewery to watch the professionals, but also so I can help myself to some fresh yeast, malt and hops. :wink2:).

I think we all know what the product is.... but the ads are a part of Americana as the beer... maybe more.

actually the ads are far more important than the beer itself. if the products had to stand on nothing more than their own merit they wouldn't exist. their creativity in advertising, price, and availability is what makes them popular.

Here are some other suggestions on the light side, but still respectable beer styles with some actual flavor:
  • American Wheat (Bell's Oberon, Anchor Summer Beer, Pyramid Hefe-Weizen, Harpoon UFO Hefeweizen, Widmer Hefeweizen, Sierra Nevada Unfiltered Wheat Beer)

YES! That stuff kicks ass, too. A bar down the street from me has it on tap. Very tasty beverage.

A-B is dead to me. Never really drank their stuff since my Busch days in college, but they're dead to me nonetheless.

You can no longer get an Old Style in the Wrigley Field Bleachers. A-B made their banishment a contingency of paying for naming rights to the bleacher renovation two years ago.

Rot in hell, A-B!

Honestly, if you want an American lager, drink something with some character like Old Style, PBR or Hamm's. There's absolutely no difference, other than in price, from Bud or Miller products in that none of them are real beer. They're a beer-like malted beverage fermented from high fructose corn syrup and rice.

Thanks for the advice. I know the beers I drink don't have much flavor, that's why I drink them. I wish I liked guinness and such, I just don't. Every so often, I'll order a different, darker beer at the bar to just see if things have changed. They haven't yet. I will keep trying.

Try German, Czech or Austrian pilsners or lagers. Czechvar (actually called Budvar in the rest of the world) or Stiegl are great choices--not heavy or overwhelming in the least. They're just, good, clean flavorful beers.

In no time at all, you'll be on to good British porters and stouts.

I agree, although the only time I drink light american lagers is at a ball game or Hineygate. If you take a look at the winners of last year's Great American Beer Festival, Pabst won a gold and silver in the American Style Cream Ale category (for Lone Star and Old Style) and another gold and silver in the American Style Light Lager category (for Old Milwaukee Light and PBR Light), Miller won a gold and silver in the American Style Lager category (for Hamm's and MGD) and another gold and silver in the American Style Specialty Lager category (for Icehouse and Mickey's Ice). As you can see, pricing and marketing have no correlation with what tastes better.

And one clarification, most american lagers do use adjuncts (like corn and rice), however to the best of my knowledge they are all converted to sugars in the mash and not added separately as a syrup.

I saw from another thread that you're in Chicago. What neighborhood? Any good new bars for beer selection. I tend to go more for imports than micros. I'm pretty familiar with the usual suspects: hopleaf, Jake's, map room, delilah's, the German places near Lincoln Square. Dog friendly is definitely a plus.

If I'm looking for good beer, I usually hang out at the Map Room, Piece or Goose Island Clybourn. That's my beer triangle. In the city after work I'll hit Clark Street Ale House, Rock Bottom or maybe Elephant and Castle as they have Fuller's London Pride there on cask. For a Cub's game it's usually Goose Island Wrigleyville or Sheffields. But I wouldn't say that I'm really a regular at any of those places as the wife and I like to mix things up alot and try new places. But about every few months we'll spend the entire afternoon on a Saturday or Sunday at the Map Room. It's a great place to hang out in the afternoon before it gets too busy at night with all the freaks, especially now that all bars have gone non-smoking.

Map Room's great, but I don't get to Bucktown/WP nearly as much as I should. It just seems that the Kennedy becomes something of a barrier--psychological more than anything else, and we end up staying on the east side of it.

I'm headed over there this weekend to check out the Violet Hour for cocktails and then to Mirai for sashimi.

You should check out Jake's Pub (2900 North Clark). They have a great, eclectic beer selection and are very dog friendly (if that's important). Right across the street is Duke of Perth, which has Fuller's and several other Brit/Scottish beers on tap, as well as the city's best Scotch selection.

I've been to Violet Hour once and thought it was a bit too formal and funky for me. Plus we're not really into cocktails so it's not really our type of place. Mirai is awesome and we go there every month or so.

Never been to Jake's Pub before as we're on the west side of the Kennedy barrier. Don't have a dog (or kids for that matter), so no preferences there. And I have been to Duke of Perth several times, although not for awhile. It's a great Scottish pub.

All this talk about beer and bars is making me thirsty, so I'm gonna leave work and head to a pub.

Cheers!
