Home Repairs/HoneyDo List/Advice & Tips/etc.

Buy a couple two-drawer filing cabinets. Set the desktop on those. Voila! Combination drawers and legs.

I'm upgrading the home office, and my wife wanted me to make a desk that is more or less the length of the wall in the room. I just bought a house so don't have much experience doing anything more than telling the landlord to fix it. Is it really as simple as finding legs, buying enough wood at Lowe's and screwing them together/leveling? I figure I'll need to sand it down and do some sort of stain/seal so we don't get splinters while we're working on it, but can't think of anything else that I would need to worry about. Am I missing anything or already making it too complicated? Thanks.

I think you need to spend some time on Google. There are plenty of "make your own furniture" articles. Depending on your skill set you might be better off buying something at Ikea or the like that you asseble at home. That way you get to say you built it yourself but it doesn't look like shit.

Finally got the fan installed in our soon to be daughters room. I hope I don't have to go back into the attic anytime soon. I hate doing anything up there.

Ah yes ... I remember when my kids' rooms looked like a Target catalog. Then they were actually born and the walls were covered in spilt milk and boogers.

The wife and I just signed a lease for a brand new townhouse and while browsing through the cabinets to make sure things looked good we found a Nexia starter kit box (the door lock, thermostat, and presumably a few outlets are compatible with the system, I checked). Anyone here use the Nexia system and think it's worth the $9/month?

Not worth it IMO; there are plenty of free home automation systems that will save you the $ and serve just as well.

Painting... whole interior of the house...

recommendations on Paint brand and type... everything else is covered... and i'd prefer not to spend an arm and a leg on the paint.

edit: 2 kids both under 5
