Holding Calls--Penalty Discussion (Merged)

Can someone explain what 'Roughing the Center' is? I have never, ever, in my life of watching football, college or pro, heard that before. The BS thing is that the center just has to keep his head down and flop when he's touched with two hands to get 15 free yards and an automatic first down. :roll1:

Now my experience is only in high school, but the rules are similar. It's a safety issue more or less....

The umpire always tells the people near the center to keep their hands off until he has his head up.

the Michigan player was practically standing straight up when he was hit, but his head hadn't come up yet. So yes he milked it as much as he could, but at the same time, I don't think he embellished the hit any, he was run over as well....

It's a rule that is completely on the umpires interpretation, but there isn't a chance it will get changed because it's for "safety"

It is absolutely a rule. We teach kids at the middle school level to stay off the center and any ref worth his salt yells it out before the ball is snapped.

"Stay off the center."

You can shoot the gaps all you want, but you can't run the center because he is in a "defenseless" position (head down looking back through his legs). It's designed to protect the player, obviously. It doesn't get called a lot, but it was a legit call, IMO.

EDIT BuckeyeMike beat me to it

What if the center doesnt raise his head?

You cant rush him for the whole play?

It is a penalty, but he took all the fucking time in the world and still didnt raise his head.

Right, but what I'm saying is Michigan's long snapper NEVER raised his head on any of their punts. I believe that the following two punts, Ohio State didn't even line anyone up over him, or remotely near him, after the penalty was called.

I understand the safety concern, but if he can simply look down the entire time than he can milk the rule, which UM did. I'm wondering if Carr saw something in OSU film and notified the officials that he wanted that called.

What are you smoking ????

That hit on Troy that gave you guys a automatically first down if that wasnt horseshit I dont know what was. If he is suppose to be so good then quit crying like a little bitch. You fuckin Ohio state fans kill me. You win a few years in a row and think you have been ruling the world. Play some teams with strength on the ROAD during the season besides Michigan and then lets see if your #1. You beat us this year but I remeber the days with your boy Willie Hayes you all werent talking crap back then or the days with John Cooper. Enjoy the ride...who goes up must come down and ohio state bucks are on their way down if the rematch happens. GO BLUE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I've been a three year lurker but a Buckeye since 1960. Love the site and have turned many other Buckeyes onto it in the past three years.

I, too, was livid about the call on the punt. I've never heard of a penalty being called for contacting a punt formation center snapper. The word among the folks I was with during The Game was that you couldn't contact the center with his head down. The NCAA Rules of Football, Rule 9, Article 2r. states:

r. When a team is in scrimmage kick formation, a defensive player may not
initiate contact with the snapper until one second has elapsed after the
snap (A.R. 9-1-2-XXII-XXIV).

Obviously, a judgment call on the official's part. One which, I'm sure, LLLLLoyd pointed out prior to the start of the game. As others have noted, I don't think you saw tOSU line up over the center on punts any more.

Didn't you just post in the "rematch" thread offering "Thoughts for reasonable OSU fans"?

Very nice reasonable response you've got there. :slappy:

The punter refusing to raise his head all day?

Coherent arguments aren't your strong suit.

Sounds like my experience growing up in MI in the 90's.

I do love how UM fans suddenly become big ND supporters (they no longer suck) when SoS comes into play.

Were you?

Uh huh. We were on our way down before saturday too... the defense was too salty, bo would give UM the edge, this isn't the same UM team, blah blah blah.

Run along home and wait for next year.
