Holding Calls--Penalty Discussion (Merged)

We all know it's obvious that there were several bad calls in the Iowa game. What should make everyone feel great is that the officiating crew could not have made enough bad calls and keep their jobs and cause the bucks to lose. The bucks dominated that much. Even better was the fact that OSU played like champions who have been there before and did not lower themselves to Iowa's level. This team has been coached damn well and we should all be proud of that and the victory and try to forget about the negatives. No one was injured as a result of the shady play and the victory was never really in doubt. I think the officiating crew do their best and there is no conspiracy against the buckeyes. If you want to complain to the Big-10 then don't forget about the Gonzalez miss-call against the scUM last year in their house where he stepped out of bounds and then made the game changing play. I love my bucks and I get upset at the Zebras from time to time but let's not lower ourselves to Loyd Carr's level.

You mean the non-call they got correct since Gonzo was forced out by the defender? The official threw his hat down indicating he saw it, but didn't flag it because Gonzo was forced out and came back in immediately.

From The-Ozone:
OSU's final drive of 88 yards was a series of clutch plays, but none was bigger than the 27 yard pass from Troy Smith to Anthony Gonzalez that put the Buckeyes in business at the four-yard line. On the play, Gonzalez was forced out of bounds while running his route, but the catch was allowed since college rules a player forced out to return to the field and make a play. Gonzalez said he made sure that the official knew what had happened immediately after the play.

"I made sure that I told the ref that he pushed me out," Gonzalez said.

"The first thing I did after I caught was I ran over to the ref, I saw his hat was off, and I said "He pushed, He pushed me . He said 'You're O.K., you're O. K., don't worry about it."

I couldn't have said it any better, I agree 100%

Good call Tones. I did not know he was pushed out by a defender. All I remember from that play was Loyd whining about it afterwards.

I didn't realize what happened either until I saw Gonzo's quotes after that game. The rest of your post was absolutely correct, though!

I don't know if anyone else caught this, but #47, the one who hit Datish, was also the same one that ran up behind Troy Smith followed closely behind him in what looked like a weak attempt to talk smack. Further demonstrating what class #47 has, the moment Troy turned around, he headed the other way toward his sideline.

saw this on youtube lastnight. it is a video of the play you describe. this guy is a scum bag and I hope he gets whats coming to him!

There have several comments about the dirty play of Iowa in that game. One guy taking a shot at Pitt's head with his knee was one caught by the camera. Even my wife let out a "WTF?"

How Datish restrained himself from going Roy Jones Jr. on King's head is beyond me.

I think Mr. Laurenitis and friends will be paying a little visit to Kings house this week. :wink2:

I don't think Gonzalez was "pushed" out of bounds. But he was "forced" out of bounds. The correct call was made, as far as I can tell.

As for calling/not calling penalties, I think a lot of it is personal bias. Someone else already said it: it's holding only when the other team is blocking your team. I'd like to say that I can watch some of these games with a level head, and still it seems as though Michigan ALWAYS gets the calls their way, and Ohio State doesn't.

I really hope that officials don't pick favorites. The moment that they do, college football becomes more like WWF wrestling than a real sport. I don't care HOW they come up with favorites, whether it's "I'm from Oregon, so I want Oregon and Oregon State to win," or "SMU got hosed on a call last week by another officiating crew, so I'm going to be lenient with them," or "Ohio State is favored and I'm in Iowa, and it's a night game and these fans are loud, so I'll be lenient to Iowa." They're all equally absurd thoughts for an official to have.

Got this info from this link...

Only 17 penalties called against our opponents after 5 games? With our almost unblockable D-Line?
Now couple your comment with these stats:

11.Michigan State...... 5 7 37

That's 3.6 sacks per game (best in the Big10, T-9 nationally with Texas)... This further solidifies that the DLine is getting great penetration in the backfield and still making plays through non-called holds.

How is the production numbers of a team relevant to whether they get penalties called for them? Do the officials say, "Ohio State is leading the Big Ten in sacks. We should give the other team a hand. Ohio State ought to be able to deal with it." You're right in that the Ohio State defensive line is doing a truly outstanding job. But when someone says, "Ohio State's opponents rarely get called for holding," a response of, "But Ohio State leads the Big Ten in sacks," is a spearate issue. If there's any correlation between the two stats, I could see it to be that either

1. Ohio State opponents truly rarely hold Ohio State's defense, and Ohio State is able to get sacks easily, and the officials are calling the game properly,

or
2. Ohio State opponents aren't holding properly, and Ohio State is STILL getting the sacks.

Other than that, I think the conversation is going off on a tangent if you bring up defensive stats when someone says that Ohio State doesn't get the calls.
