Marietta College to cut 3 dozen administrators and faculty

The move comes after the private nonprofit in Ohio unveiled plans last year to eliminate 10 academic programs with low enrollment.

Just popping this one in here, my niece is actually impacted, and will be transferring (she had been on a full ride for tuition, then was an RA for her living expenses, and they had to cut RA's) She didn't really like it that much but "free" is a powerful thing, once its not free and you don't like it... well...

That sucks for her and the rest of those impacted at Marietta. My younger one has a full ride and his university has been having financial issues. We’ve had fingers crossed they hold things together until he graduates.

Heard recently STRS is decreasing the number of years for people to qualify for retirement benefits. Sounds like they may want to help state colleges thin staffing across Ohio.

and a valuable life lesson in capitalism will be won.

Well, I did have that conversation about that with my wife who was pissed that both her sister's kids were going to get huge amounts of aid... then this happened and the other kid didn't get the scholarship he thought he was going to get...

And of course our kid could have gotten the same kind of stuff in the same kind of situation. And even a pretty nice package at a MAC school, but the pieces added up to paying full go where she is made the most sense and my ability to capitalism and pay for it makes their loss of smugness all worthwhile.

So it does suck for her, but she'll land in a better place and I get to be petty. Niece wins, I win, Ohio State wins.

Edit: I think she had also just changed or was considering changing majors so... timing wasn't super awful.

This isn't the first downsizing rodeo at tOSU. Do recollect that lost several/many departments because of low attendance. Especially the Eskimo studies, that had nine students (as a major), but had a full staff of Chair, secretary/support staff, and (don't recall) several full profs and asst profs. As an aside, very much believe that universities are willing to educate you, but that not so willing to tell you there'll be zero jobs for you upon graduation. Look at education. tOSU graduates, what, 1,200 teachers a year, well, there's certainly not 1,200 teachers retiring/non-re-elected each year for jobs. Now add to that each and every university with an education department, which exacerbates the overall problem alot.

Pretty shocking news out of Florida. Don't want to get into the politics of this, but he's a dumbass for thinking it wouldn't be brought up. And why did he leave scUM? Florida isn't a bigger school.

But like others have said on this thread. why the hell would anybody want to be a President of a state school in this climate is beyond me.

Is UF going to go after the other big dork in college land, i.e. E Gordon Gee? When talking about this story with a co-worker, I referred to Ono as the "evil E Gordon Gee"

He was a total assclown with the Harbaugh saga so karma is a bitch. :slappy:
