Higher Ed. firings and resignations

The little private liberal arts schools are going to die without a new game plan. Oberlin has the kook cult, but the Otterbeins, Muskinghams, Heidelbergs, Capitals…they’re just too expensive. Even BW will likely be in trouble I would imagine
They had a "slight" budget issue in the news recently. Something like they were anticipating a $3 million deficit and it was nearly 10 times that.

Also, places like BW and other liberal arts schools are adding in things like Nursing, PA and NP programs. It won't save the universities, but it helps bring in students and revenue to stave off the hatchets.

Of course, places like CSU have nursing and they still screwed the pooch.

The demographics in Ohio are definitely not favorable for higher ed staying the same.

One of my kid's friends is a confirmed flip from Capital to OU.

My niece goes to Marietta on a pretty nice aid package, and she wanted to change her major and there was concern that would be impacted, and they were like, "nah, don't worry about it, you're good" because, well, they need the dues.

Interesting different phenomenon, a bunch of my daughters soccer teammates who were dyed in the wool "gonna for sure play in college" ditch that plan immediately once Ohio State accepts them. (They could spin up a pretty nasty intramural group tho)

Never thought I'd read articles like these. Ohio has always had a 'college for everyone', although the price for these small, liberal arts schools is pretty stiff. Am I reading that these small schools are acting like a Junior College type of program? In the day, it was harder to get into say, Oberlin than tOSU, grade and test scorewise, and the tuition was much higher. Or maybe these smaller institutions of learning are acting as more of a trade school? Don't believe these smaller guys get any state (or federal?) funding, so yeah, that makes it a tough go. Got recruited out of Whetstone HS to play basketball at several of these smaller schools, but ended up at Miami U. instead. Always wondered what would have happened if had gone to a smaller place.

You would have turned into a goddamn hippie and not gone on golf tours of the pacific rim.

There, now you know.

Well, in college had an afro and a polo shirt. Was playing golf on Scarlet & Gray, and at Heuston Woods (down Miami U way). Expanded my game muchly in California. Pacific Rim is 2025, when go on cruise (Azamara), and play 7 courses in Australia and New Zealand put on by Perry Golf. Ps, did a little pot and hash in college.....

The University of Akron just had their president step down immediately. A new president was appointed at the same time and is an internal hire. This seems like it might have called for an actual search, but guess not. They were probably worried @ORD_Buckeye would apply;-)

Edit - Looks like the now former president told the board a few months ago he planned to retire so they did an internal search.

Chair of the Ohio Regents is what I'm angling for. Say goodbye to any doctoral or masters program that doesn't rank in the top 100 nationally. Say goodbye to Bowling Green/Toledo and Kent/Akron being separate institutions. Say goodbye to a state funding model that treats Ohio State the same as Kent State. Say goodbye to Akron's law school. And because payback is the ultimate bitch, Fredo of Ohio is now mandated to have open admissions and build the necessary dorm space for anyone who applies.

Behind a pay wall, but the title says most of it. 5 years ago CSU made $500 per student. Now it loses $800 per. Their athletic department loses $6.9 million a year, but is looking at just $500,000 of cuts.

Drake came to tOSU from UC-Irvine. Part of the UC system, in Orange County. Great technical school. No football team, only recollect a good volleyball team. Sooo, point is that Drake wasn't going to be sympathetic to a football factory, was an educator at heart, without an appreciation for a sports school. Not surprised he used tOSU as a springboard to become head of the UC system, but also not surprised he was found wanting. Let us not forget that UC board (Berkeley has the big stick here) includes the governor of California, good old wingnut Gavin Newsome. Remember Newsome thrashing around because UCLA jumped ship from Pac10 to B10, threatening all sorts of stuff. Not close to it anyway, but didn't think his tenure at tOSU was remarkable in any way. Just riding the horse, trying to stay in the saddle, and keep on truckin'.

This is where the arrogance of universities and colleges in general is about to bite them in the proverbial keister...they have fought for decades for the whole "we don't prepare people for work, we prepare people for life" mantra/philosophy/bullshit/whatever-you-prefer...but as more and more places that are hiring drop the college degree requirement, particularly at entry level, the value of these places collectively continues to decline rapidly, especially as the burden of cost has so greatly increased on the students. If you want a professional degree, you will still need an undergraduate one. But as more and more pathways open for people to build careers without an undergrad degree, the less and less power that universities will wield. Eventually, someone in charge will start to realize that, say, the overpaid and far too extensive professional administrative class, will have to be jettisoned.
