One of the long standing problems at OSU is that the local rag, the Dispatch, is all but an in house organ for the football program. Hayes got so used to being treated with kid gloves by Paul Hornung that he seemed to feel that all other reporters, especially national press types should defer to his wishes.

Herbstreit is another case in point. I heard him talking about the conservative offense before a recent game and he DID NOT say that he wouldn't recommend OSU to offensive prospects. He said that it wouldn't surprise him if offensive players looked elsewhere and on that point I agree. Why would you go to OSU to play "three and out" and wait for the defense to win the game? How Tressel was able to get kids like Ginn and Holmes to come to Columbus when they could go to Lafayette or Ann Arbor and win games is beyond me.

And don't give the bullshit speech about how the offense is young and inexperienced. It all comes down to coaching, and playcalling. Period. Look at scUM - they have a true frosh at RB, a true frosh at QB, and if I'm not mistaken, their offensive line is pretty young as well.

BS. You cannot tell me that coaching, play calling, and pre-game preparation are the reason why the Buckeyes are losing games. These kids take the field every Saturday and are in a position to win, and they're simply not getting it done. It isn't anymore difficult to figure out than to look at the turnover margin. If the Bucks stop turning the ball over, that's two W's (Northwestern and Purdue) and they're sitting at 8-2. The other two losses (Iowa and Wisconsin) were dictated by turnovers that precipitated their collapse (Zwick's interception at Iowa and Holmes's fumble on the punt return against Wisconsin). Zwick has thrown what, 5 or 6 picks? Smith, 3? How many times have each of them fumbled? How about Lydell? I know Roy Hall has fumbled at least once and Holmes at least twice.

Tressel speaks the truth, you cannot lose the turnover margin 1-4 or 0-3 and expect to win, especially on the road against a team like Iowa or Purdue. What compounds the turnover problem is that it never happens between the 40s, its always behind the 20s, either costing us 3 or 7 points, or giving the other team 3 or 7 points. The turnovers kill drives, momentum, and makes even a 300 yard day impossible.

And, whether you want to admit it or not, the team IS inexperienced. Nothing can account for real game experience, since we all know the players aren't going full-out contact in pads during practice. Aside from Mangold, nobody on offense really has more than 3 or 4 quarters worth of garbage time experience over the last year or two.

And your statement about Michigan's O-Line is wrong too. Stenavich, Lentz, and Massaquoi are seniors, Baas is 5th year, Riley is a junior, with the lone newbie being sophomore Jake Long (who is 6-7/335 and filling in for Kolodziej - the lone starting lineman who lost his job following the Notre Dame game). Michigan is SO loaded on the O-Line they have 3rd, 4th and 5th year all-americans on the 2-deep. That's over 120 starts for the current starting line - four of the six with more than 20 starts each when this season ends.

Screw Henne and Hart being freshmen, my grandmother could rush for 1000-yards behind this offensive line.

Sorry on this one I don't agree! Herbdick is pushing his luck and has crossed the line of a true buckeye. I don't know if JT or another staff member pissed him off or he is simply trying to impress his colleagues. But he is not impressing me or a lot of true Buckeye fans. Bottom line is there is no twisting of words here, Geigers 100 % right! One other thing about ineffectiveness, I have seen much improvement over the last four weeks on offence haven't you? In edition Anything negative said on our website could not land us that next great recruit. Herbstreit says these things on live TV ... not to mention on the GAMEDAY show.

I'll concede that, as I was unsure to begin with. I thought I heard somewhere that scUM's offensive line was all graduating (from last year), but I was too lazy to look it up.

As for the rest of it, however, I stand by my original points. Yeah, turnovers have hurt us...but if you think playcalling hasn't, you're on crack. Especially in this context of how it could hurt our recruiting (talking about Herbie's statements). I don't want to threadjack this into a discussion on playcalling and coaching, but understand, my comments which you referenced were aimed more towards recruiting than as to why we lost the games. Herbie has publicly stated that Tressel's conservative offense and playcalling will hurt TOSU's recruiting. My above comments were meant to say that I believe him, and agree with him. This offensive unit has the talent, they just have been (so far) forced to play with handcuffs.

I have to disagree with this one.. while in a perfect world, a true buckeye would mean that he wears nothing but scarlet & grey colored suits to work, lol, the truth is so far from that..

A true Buckeye shows what he has ACCOMPLISHED by being associated to The Ohio State University. He doesn't bad mouth the university. As his job requires, he has commented on our offense, defense, team, etc... some things I might not totally agree with, but it's his opinion.

Now that I said that, I still stand by my original statements that I feel that Tressel and Geiger will be upset with him and not so happy about his statements. Geiger has now come out and said it.

The point is, Herbstreit was our fricken starting QB at one point.. of course he is a true Buckeye.

First, let me say how much I enjoy the way Andy Geiger is handling this. My opinion of him has grown much in the past week.

Second, I think Herbstreit can't really speak until the NCAA probe is over. If he takes a defense of the program and one little thing is found, his career nationally is toast. Take his silence to be support and wait for the day when he will be able to speak.

First I love the way that Geiger has come out and fired back at those making the allegations against the school. He's been very aggresive and out front with things. Being very open about inviting the NCAA back in was a great move.

That said, I disagree with his reaction to Herby. Everything that Herby's said about the state of the program has come from his heart as a former player and allumn. I think it's also been well thought out. Herby's not stupid. All of his comments about the offense, I generally agree with. This offense is the most conservative non-risk taking offense I've ever seen on the D-I level. You are not going to score when your offense is run from a mindset of fear of making mistakes rather than trying anything you can to put points on the board. Recruits aren't stupid. They are going to catch on and start going elsewhere cause this is not an attractive offense to play in. If I were an offensive recruit and I knew I wasn't going to be allowed to do what I do and have my hands tied I wouldn't go to that program. If this continues, we will start losing the top offensive recruits! It's time for Coach Tressel (who I really like as a head coach) to bring in a REAL Offensive Coordinator and be the head coach.

Dude, take a pill. Herbie has always just called it like he sees it. This is no different, the same conversations (about offensive recruits) were being had on BN 2yrs ago. I wouldn't suppose you recognize the name Dewayne Jarret? Personally I don't think it matters, tOSU will get their share and no one gets them all.

Herbie is in a tough situation, and personally if I was Gieger I would've called him to clarify before I called him out in the media. I really don't think it is fair for anyone to question his loyalties to the university.

I dont know about some of your coment's. True you may love the buckeyes as much as I do or not, but who said I did anything for the buckeyes ecept graduate from there. I said Tressel has done far far more that Herbsteit could ever do in his lifetime guy. Would you disagree because your on crack if so.

While coaching here as an assistant for Woody he learned Quite a lot about football, winning and a whole hell of alot more than you or I.
IF you dont know that this Offence is headed in the right direction than talk all you want about bottom 20 % or any other stats you can find. You forgot the most important stat WINs and losses though, sure this year we are young inexperienced and learning but were getting better. Thats what counts the most and theres no stat for that.
One more thing stay off the paint chips and drugs, it is impairing your judgement about our bucks.

So, Einstein, a "true" Buckeye can never be objective in his observations concerning Ohio State? He should be so blatant in his on-air support of the Buckeyes that he'd be nothing more than a homer? Fuck that. If our offense sucks, then he, as a former Buckeye QB, has more than enough right, and responsibility, to say so. i am really surprised anybody can criticize herbie for telling it like it is about our lack of offense and how it can affect recruiting in the future. i agree with all the above posters who have pointed out how our anemic offense even during the championship season will be looked upon by potential offensive recruits. remember ginn jr as great as he has shown to be on offense was the defensive player of the year no. ohio state has never been known as quarterback u and conservative play, close to the vest, dont make mistakes attitude on offense and let the d win is gonna get us some great defensive recruits but we are gonna play hell ever getting anybody's top 1 or 2 recruits at the quarterback position.

Inconceivably, some fans in Columbus are ripping into Jim Tressel (record at OSU: 35-9, including a two-year-old national title). But grumbling happens when you lose to Northwestern and barely beat Marshall.

Most of you that are bashing Herbie are total hypocrites because you would bash other public figures for being homers. You would claim that they shouldn't be in the national media unless they can be fair, balanced and unbiased. Kirk has never hidden his feelings about how much he loves this program and at times he can't even contain that while being an analyst (Fiesta Bowl, last year at scUM, etc.). Don't question Kirks loyalty, because the man hasn't sold out. He's doing his job well and I feel that he's kept his journalistic integrity while still remaining a fan.

You all will get on here and bash our playcalling, players, coaches, etc...but when Kirk does it, you say he is less of a fan? Freakin' hypocrites...you know who you are.

Any way you look at it, Kirk Herbstreit is very good for tOSU football program.

He co-hosts the most widely viewed college football show in America. He is attractive, articulate and can be very funny. So the average American football fan relates to him very well ...or he wouldn't be on the show. ESPN has other options.

Everyone who watches that show -- I'd guesstimate 15 million people or so -- knows that this guy they like very much played at tOSU. That's called "representing" and Herbie does it very well.

So you can be upset that he's not a complete Buckeye whore if you want to, but you're dead wrong if you think his national prominence and popularity with college football fans don't reflect well on tOSU. They do. He is a PR bonanza for the University and headbanger "fans" who can't see that are blind, or stupid, or both.
