HC Ryan Day (2019 B1G Media COY)

Listened to Fulton talk about possible DC candidates that also are familiar with Day's preferences. Many of them were former HCs that are now position coaches like Charlie Strong and Muschamp (hard pass).

Yeah hard pass on anyone mentioned as DC by Fulton IMO... you have to go get the best available if we eventually go that route and let them fix everything.

OK, what's wrong with Charlie Strong of Will Muschamp? I think either one would be "home run" a DC; both have proven to be great DCs and excellent recruiters. However, I don't see Ryan Day trying to lure Charlie Strong away from Urban/Jags though.

Another idea that wouldn't change our coaching personnel. Make Al Washington co-defensive coordinator/LB coach and bump Coombs to co-defensive coordinator/CB coach. Reassign Matt Barnes as the safeties/nickel back/bullet coach. Washington turned down the DC at Tennessee last March to stay at Ohio State.

Until the LB rotation can be locked down, and they can look more solid themselves Washington deserves to be a DC as much as Coombs does right now. At this stage of the season, IMO keep Washington at LB coach, make Coombs DBs coach and have Barnes assist him. Bring in another DC to be a Co with Coombs, but he calls the plays and sits in the booth. Or fire(i.e. have him step down in public) Coombs and bring in a new DC, and if the title is needed, make Washington Co-DC but new coach is in the booth and calls plays. Barnes would then be the DB coach. But I think Coombs is still an ace recruiter and can be great with his energy for the players, but he is much better suited as a position coach

My problem with them is they both haven’t been a DC in years.. Both are older (yes i’m being ageist) and were “home runs” a long time ago.

Not sure why we wouldn’t just fire Barnes… I don’t know what he’s done since he was hired… I’d fire him and go after Corey Raymond in the eventual purge in LSU.

Still feel like Fleming was a wasted hire when the D clearly needed help … Sorry to Fleming he might be great but we dont need a special teams coach we need someone on D that maybe coaches ST some of the time.

I want my DC to be young and hungry… I’m good with givin it to Al and letting him run with it for this year..

The only position on defense playing well is the corners really. I wouldn't want Barnes to go he hasn't done anything wrong. I do agree with Fleming though but only because I'm not sure why Day didn't use the extra coach on a defensive guy. After all Day helps out with the offense so it's like the offense has an extra coach.

I always felt like ST responsibilities could've been handled by Barnes while he also handles the DBs.

I think the only change we make is Coombs. I've always really wanted us to get Corey Raymond but I don't know how that'd work.

For me? Just give me the best available. Someone who's done it and has done a great job at it. Huge fan of Bud Foster myself but I doubt he wants back in.

Damn I don’t ever remember Urbz throwing coaches under the bus like Day practically did with Coombs.

No, he didn't, and that because, as we all found out in a number of instances, Urban was overly loyal to his coaches. He would however, more or less, throw players under the bus, as a way to motivate them. (Clown show, gushing over one particular player within a unit, off the top of my head.) Not that I consider that a bad thing. It's a great motivational technique and the results prove it, but that kind of tough love was never extended to coaches.

Yeah today really surprised me... but I thought it was encouraging as well. He'll probably have to back it up here within the next 4 weeks but he doesn't appear to be bluffing.

I was actually only saying hard pass to Muschamp because I think he's a nut and 1 play away from fighting one of his players. Strong would be fine with me. Doesn't have to be a home run hire or even call plays, just be a guy who knows the defense and is a continuation coach while other younger star coaches come and go.

"WHEN YOU LOOK AT THE TOTAL YARDS OF OFFENSE, OVER 600 YARDS AGAINST A VERY GOOD DEFENSE (MOVING THE BALL) IS NOT THE ISSUE..."

"BUT WHEN YOU'RE NOT CONVERTING ON 4TH DOWN, THOSE COUNT AS TURNOVERS AND NOT FINISHING OFF DRIVES IS NOT GOOD ENOUGH. WE HAVE TO RUN THE BALL BETTER AND DO A BETTER JOB FINISHING OFF DRIVES. THAT'S JUST THE BOTTOM LINE." - RYAN DAY
