HC Ryan Day (B1G Coach of Year, B1G Champion, National Champion)

Actually optimistic. I hope he has a fresh perspective now. Sometimes it’s fun for a “manager” to get their hands dirty on a project again. And luckily this is short term for a month, while knowing he doesn’t have to “handhold” the defensive staff. He can simply go back to his roots without being too overstretched.

And hopefully he learned from what Chip (and he) did in last year’s playoffs. Time to flip the script and break tendencies now (formations, plays).

Please dust off the Chip Kelly playbook from last years run.
Ward and Birm (I think, it’s somewhere in the ether of the Ohio State content I consume) more than hint that Day was way more involved in the play calling for last year’s postseason run as well. I think the key to Day effectively inserting himself in that role is the extra preparation time.

Makes sense. Today’s Head Coach CEO simply can’t or shouldn’t be hyper involved week to week. I think you lose sight of managing the program if he’s in the weeds too much. He’d also burnout.

We talk about Day managing the players’ snapcounts but he’s got limited time and capacity throughout the season too. Now those constraints are gone - it’s 100% about winning 3 games so he’s full-go himself.

Also, I’m definitely reading this with scarlet glasses but it’s really interesting seeing Day’s comments about Smith/Tate leading up to The Game.

Makes me wonder if the IU gameplan with 3-4 tight ends wasn’t out of necessity. How do you install specific plays for IU when those 2 might have been limited in practice after exerting themselves to beat Michigan? Hartline was in and out too. Ohio State definitely wanted to win but maybe they just kinda “rolled the ball out” and gave it their best effort with what they could gameplan off a physical and emotional week.

Now there are still situational headscratchers (surely they can be on the field for 3rd and 1) and individual mistakes (Tegra, Sayin a little panicked after the most pressure he’s faced, Fielding miss), but it took everything on and off field going against them that game.

Nearing game week and I’m just feeling better about what we’ll see going forward.

I'm excited about Coach Day calling the plays. He excels at it and the change could be to our advantage. As long as he doesn't get stubborn. Would like to see some crossing patterns implemented because they have been effective against Miami's D. Getting Julian outside the pocket and using Klare might also help to move the chains. But we've got to score TDs in the red zone.

Yes, he excels at it, but he also sucks at it. It just depends on which Day we get and from much of what I’ve seen this year, I’m not super encouraged. Hartline didn’t call that bullshit Indiana scheme by himself. Let’s hope that we somehow get the CFP 2024 version.
Luckily we aren’t playing TCUN. Other than them Day has been very very good.

Think of the game with long layoffs. UGA, Utah, and both Clemson games.

I agree it’s likely a benefit because now the tendencies for the year start over. They’ll have to study the past years film to get a gauge on his tendencies et.

Well redzone issues lost us Clemson 2019. But otherwise yep. UGA Ryan Day murders everything with this D
