HC Ryan Day (B1G Coach of Year, B1G Champion, National Champion)

The comp I always pine for in many ways…..USC at its peak under Pete Carroll. They never took their foot off
the gas. They wanted to throttle the shit out of everyone and played that way. They had an identity. It was fast. It was aggressive. It was cocky. It was fucking lethal. They didn’t seem obsessed with maintaining a 50/50 run pass split. They were just obsessed with scoring 70 whenever they wanted. Didn’t matter how it happened. Day is to heavy on analytics and way too light on swagger. And his teams follow that vibe.

USC just knew they were going to go
out there and kick your ass.

They knew it.

Like Mike Tyson knew it.

Carroll didn’t say “we know it’s going to be a close game that comes down to the last play.”. That’s what I like about Cignetti. He has some Carroll in him.

The both fully expect to dominate. And most importantly both of their teams embody
their coaches attitudes.

It’s an attitude that Day just doesn’t convey to his teams. We have the players. We just don’t have that attitude. We are miles from having it.

I’d argue the Will Howard and that squad forged that attitude themselves and drug Day with them. They just didn’t give a shit at that point and played loose and aggressive and Day followed suit. Not the other way around. That was a player lead identitiy.

I implore you to go look at the game summaries of USC outside of their 34-game winning streak. You are romanticizing them wayyyyyy too much

Probably because finesse hasn’t won Day anything. If he wants a team capable of playing both ways then OSU either needs to start ponying up for the best OL money can buy or hire one hell of a coach capable of developing even in ranked OLs.

I mean, part of what I have made my peace with is in the statement of "all the losses are the same".

It's just the way he is, you get the good with the bad.

It's not like we can call to the bullpen at halftime and have Tress come calmly walking out of the dressing room to Tresselball the opponent to death with a second half lead.

Everyone can do their own thing but for me, I'm over the angst part. Day is what Day is, you get the rain and you get the mud.

Tressel had the exact scenario against Arkansas in the Sugar Bowl. A 28-10 halftime lead dwindled to 31-26 before Solomon Thomas intercepted Ryan Mallett with 58 seconds left.

I know I'm guilty of some revisionist history. I remembered Arkansas making a game of it, but I didn't remember it getting *that* tight.

My key takeaway from that game was Terelle Pryor picking up some huge third downs with his legs that kept the clock moving. Ryan Day didn't abandon the run in the second half against Texas, but he certainly didn't run it enough.

Man if this doesn’t succinctly sum up a lot of thoughts.

Everyone around football (analyst, film guys) and my friends general perception of Ohio State is just “well they have a lot talent.” I don’t hear much raving about our coaches scheming or gameplanning above and beyond anymore.

Especially the offense. Patricia’s defense got recognized for “doing some things” that were simple yet complex. The offense? Well…they’re talented.

Performance Review: Ross Bjork Says Ryan Day’s Leadership Transcends Ohio State, Buckeyes Had “Best Team All Season” in 2025 Despite Postseason Losses​

Ross Bjork was highly complimentary of Ryan Day in his annual performance review this summer.

In his review of Day for the 2025-26 academic year, which Eleven Warriors obtained through a public records request on Monday, Ohio State’s athletic director gave the Buckeyes’ football coach a grade of “Exceeds Expectations” and praised Day’s leadership and the culture he has built.

“Coach Day's leadership continues to transcend Ohio State and the game of college football on all levels,” Bjork wrote in his review, dated June 18. “He has developed and evolved into one of the leading voices of the sport and has kept Ohio State football at the forefront while also navigating the rapid changes impacting college sports. The culture of our program is as strong as it has ever been, and that is a testament to his leadership and focus on every detail within the program. The coaching staff he has assembled and the program structure in place allows him to truly be the "CEO of Ohio State University Football," and this organizational set-up is critical to our success moving forward.”

Bjork highlighted Ohio State’s performance both on and off the field over the past year. While Ohio State’s 2025 season ended with postseason losses to Indiana in the Big Ten Championship Game and Miami in the College Football Playoff, Bjork felt Ohio State “had the best team all season long.”

“Coach Day's focus on recruiting the right young men to the program who are stellar students, great people, and elite players are evident in the record-setting team GPA, third straight year of a 1,000 APR score, and the social behavior of our team,” Bjork said. “Our team continues to set the tone on the field as well by going 12-0 in the 2025 regular season and winning the rivalry game. Coach Day continues to operate the most consistent program in the country over the last 25 years at the highest level, and although we fell short of a championship in 2025, we had the best team all season long and unfortunately did not finish the way we expected.”
