HC Ryan Day (2019 B1G Media COY)

My point exactly. If your strategy is bad, your tactics better be fucking great. We’ve sucked at both and, unlike some other years, I don’t blame the players at all this time.
Well we were actually one of the most efficient offenses in the country until we lost our top two OL. It’s hard to be efficient vs an elite defense and it’s nearly impossible if you aren’t playing our best players due to injuries.

You don’t want less snaps when you’re in this position you want as many as possible. I doubt much will change in terms of tempo but damn it’d be nice if it did.

I think it's a sign of an OBVIOUS culture problem in the WHAC. While disappointing, it doesn't surprise me much....we'll all miss Jack Sawyer and I think Treyveon has been a good leader and teammate this year.....I have questions about many of the other guys who came back and how motivated they were/are and what type of leadership they provide.

But ultimately, it falls on the HC....he's the one who recruited and retained this roster. Why it takes transfer portal players to reach AA status when he continually brings in top 3 classes is definitely disappointing.

What makes you think seniors weren’t motivated? I think it’s as simple as the guys that came back are really good, but weren’t the all americans we thought they would be. It was clear after the Oregon game that they didn’t have the physically dominant guys like Bosa/Young and there was a reason Burke wasn’t a first rounder.

It’s why it was always strange to me that Urban kept trying to act like this was the most talented cfp team in a decade or more. Just looking at OSU, you could argue ‘22, ‘19, ‘15, ‘14 all had higher end talent.

It’s hard to do any of these things when you frequently take 4 downs to get first downs and use up 35 seconds on the play clock. The biggest failure IMO isn’t the targets for JJ or the numbers for the RBs it’s the tempo in which we play.

When you have an offense like this why would you want less snaps? Get to the line and snap the ball. You have the talent advantage on offense so now take a tempo advantage as well which wears down a defense, causes confusion, and leaves defenders out of place.

I know the worry is “well it’ll make the defense tired” and “well if you don’t get a positive play on first down you’re in trouble”. I would say with our defense the last thing a team wants is to play a catch up game. Also who cares if the first down play gets stuffed. Get to the line and go again and then again on third down. If you somehow go three and out (unlikely) then maybe play back ups for a few drives at a few positions on defense for a change or call a time out.

Bottom line is this should’ve been a top 3 offense and I think it is one of the most talented units still. However it’s hard to score 42 points and 500+ yards when you’re working in a 10 yard window and you’re milking the entire play clock. Never mind the fact that you’re leaving yourself with absolutely zero room for error. You had better score if you go slow.

Day’s been very vocal about his thought process on game pacing this for the entire year. He prepared for a 16-17 game schedule. Of the many things to complain about, our offensive pacing seems like an odd choice to focus on.

Could we have had more explosive plays ala prior years? Absolutely. But we are still going into playoffs as one of the top offenses left.

It should've been the most talented roster of cfb and up there with '19. The coaching and development was inadequate

I think the lack of up-tempo play was directly correlated to how far behind Howard came in as a QB…..I’m not trying to be that guy, but there’s a reason Will was told he’d be better off hitting the portal….he was outplayed by a large margin by an under-classmen. And as much as I wanted Will to be the answer, and to a degree still think he can be if used properly, he’s just not a great fit with Day.

I don’t think Will reads defenses at a high enough level, or has the arm strength to demand certain coverages OSU has grown accustomed to in recent years. Defenses are playing closer to LOS to cheat on the run while being able to defend the deep ball bc it’s just a struggle for him. His touch on deep balls is horrific…combination of lack of arm strength and poor mechanics. Put bluntly, I think Day thought they were getting a higher skilled QB…..and it is what it is…..he’s more mobile than McCord, but his arm strength is woefully short. I think we’re at least a (2) loss team with McCord…I don’t think our season changes drastically bc we have McCord vs Howard…..they’re both substandard to what we’ve seen with Day since he’s been at OSU.

I think the question is…..why such a drop off at QB since Stroud left???

I think had McCord stuck it out he probably would have started this year. Almost definitely after the Oregon game. And while not perfect and clearly either entitled or scared, probably opens up the offense at least a bit, if he hadn't been killed by a patchwork OL.
