HC Ryan Day (2019 B1G Media COY)

Guys I get it… what I’ll say is he’s different now than he was when he started.

He was an aggressive up tempo bad ass mother fucker from 2018-2021. Then he lost to Alabama and then lost to TCUN. Now he’s a shell of himself and frankly I doubt he can rebound. We saw what he did vs UGA and I think when he lost that game even though there was such a great performance that was the final straw.

He gave up on that style of play when he really didn’t need to. I wish Ryan would go back to utilizing his strengths and the hell with anything else (such as feeling a need to run the ball).

I think we/ryan can rebound and win it all but he’s going to have to be different than he’s been so far this year. Stop playing slow, throw the ball, and stay aggressive.

I like how we've gone full retard and are now expecting losses simply because the seemingly never-ending temper tantrum has people pretending like Ohio State is a 3rd tier program all of a sudden.

If a game played by 18 to 22 year olds colors your outlook to the point where you have to be constantly negative and expecting the absolute worst at all times, you need to re-examine your life/lives.

It's clearly time to step back and not be a part of the forum for a while. Peace out everyone.
Here's the thing - the 18 to 22 year olds are not the problem. They never have been. And even IF they were, I wouldn't care.

What I do care about, however, is when the coaches, the adults, are failing the 18 to 22 year olds and causing them to lose.

No, but three more and a playoff spot might do the trick.
This goes back to another post by Osi asking this very question.
First off ... Fuck you Tom.

Unfortunately Tom's take is spot on. I would never guessed that our head coach would sabotage his own team.

Certainly can't disagree with Brady about that. Dead spot on.

I'm more confused than even frustrated at this point. For all of the talent on the field and in the three-deep (which we rarely play, anyway), we always start slow and we've not blown the absolute doors off of anyone. Yes, we've won by 30+, but I've never had the sense (and not only this year) that this is the elite and dominating team that it's supposed to be. This doesn't sit with the players. For the most part, this group is talented, even by tOSU standards, but we should never be three and out on an opening drive. We shouldn't, but we come out of the tunnel and run milk toast plays. To paraphrase Carville, it's the coaching, stupid.

Given the way our defense played, had we an even half-assed aggressive offense, we would have won by 30. This loss is because they're in Day's head and he was obsessed with proving his team's toughness at the expense of actually winning the damned game. I wasn't fire Day immediately after the game, but the more the way we lost sets in the more I think he needs to make (if not win) the championship game to keep his job.

Frankly, the Offense never seemed to be in sync for more than 2 quarters in any one game this year. In fact, the team never once played 4 full quarters of clean, hard football. I think we were on our way to doing that vs Oregon until Simmons got hurt. That derailed things.

The reason I say this is that for some reason, Day refused to give much meaningful playing time to Sayin even though it was clear back in September he was going to be the guy next year. I said at the game…and several around me….that Howard needed to sit. He didn’t look the same after the hit. Yet there was zero confidence in Brown and Sayin. Day has again mismanaged his QB room.

Unless he does a 180 and figures out how to get his team to play well and win the CFP, he needs to be gone from Columbus.

Outside of games in which there were injuries where backups had to play, backup QB playing time hasn't changed much in the last 10+ years. Playing backups to prep for injury and next year remains a luxury.

2001 - not sure how to divide the snaps so leaving this one alone
2002 - 31 attempts
2003 - ~45 attempts (Don't remember some of these games as well because I didn't have cable, but McMullen started against BGSU, played majority snaps vs Northwestern and then came in vs Michigan.)
2004 - split room
2005 - 28 attempts (excluding Zwick's attempts against Miami, OH and Texas)
2006 - 27 attempts
2007 - 31 attempts
2008 - not going to bother due to Pryor taking over but Boeckman still coming in some games
2009 - 19 attempts
2010 - 24 attempts
2011 - not going to bother
2012 - 23 attempts (including the Purdue game)
2013 - ~17 attempts (Outside of the 3 games Miller was injured)
2014 - ~10 attempts before JT got hurt.
2015 - Was a split room
2016 - 28 attempts
2017 - 61 attempts outside of Haskins at Michigan
2018 - 28 attempts
2019 - 49 attempts
2020 - none (covid)
2021 - 27 attempts (excluding Akron when CJ didn't play)
2022 - 20 attempts
2023 - Excluding the Cotton bowl and some early rotation with Brown, probably 20 attempts
2024 - 30 attempts

Not sure when it started in the last few years, but there's been a lot of anxiety about backups not playing enough. There are outliers, but over the last 24 years it seems like ~30 attempts is the average for the backup QBs. No one player is getting 40+ attempts as a backup.

I'm open to DL rotating more, especially JT & Jack who have started 3+ years, but in big games they're not going to play less than 45 snaps. And that was pretty consistent with what I could find for some other top schools this year. Maybe it's this year, NIL, or something else, but outside of bad OOC teams and the worse schools in your conference, backup QBs aren't getting meaningful reps and starters at other position aren't splitting time 60/40. And with some exceptions (multiple year starters, phenoms) I'd prefer 18-20 year olds to get as many reps as they can so they learn quicker.

Shit if you're shopping - I know a guy who'd probably do a decent job:

Better move quick. I hear the Bears are very interested.
Cucked by Kevin Warren again... :(

General feeling is he wants to stay in the NFL, and cannot say I'd blame him given the shit show CFB is becoming. The amount of work college coaches have to do to maintain a roster is so much more than it was just a few years ago. I wouldn't want to do it.

Smart organizations are going to have to take the GM and head coach roles as they are in n other professional sports imo.

One man cannot/should not do both.
