HC Ryan Day (2019 B1G Media COY)

My faith/trust in Day, gone.
I care about the team, Ohio State and what it means (to me, at least).
I write this to say that I'll listen to and/or watch games, but it's not for any reason of the person at the helm.
Presuming he's HC for a while, then he'll have the opportunity to work on getting back what is not present.
But right now, I don't care about the HC as an member of the Buckeyes.

The saving grace for Day is his $37mil buyout...
And the fact that OSU is in the CFP still. He needs to get to the final to continue with the good will among fans and boosters

I haven't posted around here much over the past few years--a combination of life getting in the way and my enthusiasm for modern college football waning for all the reasons I've seen @NFBuck raise in this and some other threads I've been reading through recently. I consider myself a fairly level-headed tOSU football fan. I've had many conversations with friends and family over the past several years after losses where I had to dispossess them of the notion that Day deserved his walking papers after a close loss to a good team, and I've generally viewed him as having the program in a largely enviable position, on the cusp of great things.

But now I have to say, I'm shocked that anyone is still defending him or suggesting he deserves more opportunities on the merits. The only reasons I suspect he will continue as tOSU's coach are the two things identified above by @pnuts34; and so my disdain for modern college football grows.

For years, Day has successfully brought in top talent in the form of players who ensure that virtually every Saturday there is an on-field talent disparity in tOSU's favor. And yet, he has very little by way of actual accomplishments to show for it. He's not won a Big Ten title since 2020, is 1-3 in the CFP, and has lost 4 in a row to TTUN. But really, it's this most recent loss that has caused me to lose all faith in him. The talent disparity was so great this weekend that this should not have been a close game in Ohio Stadium. The 12-men-on-the-field penalty coming out of a time out to gift TTUN a first down; the failure to fix special teams for years now; the lack of development and recruiting on the OL; a game plan that so obviously played to the one Michigan strength when there were things to exploit everywhere else: it all contributed to this maddening loss in what should have been treated as a must-win, career-altering game. It’s all inexcusable at this point. There is no explanation for what happened. It is unacceptable and deserving of a change.

The reason we won’t get a change is money and the carrot of a playoff run, which feels to me like a modern recipe for a repeat of the Cooper years.

i can imagine a conversation that would go something along the lines of, “what if martindale breaks his blitzing tendency?” to which the answer would be, “as long as he doesn’t bring extra pressure, maybe we can counter with trying to run?”

and even without blitzing, if i recall, the stats showed* that he was able to get pressure on howard, collapse his pocket and take away his scrambling lanes.

* i will double check how many pressures howard had

EDIT: tcun pulled off a pressure rate of 49%!!!
Santa came way early for old Wink. What game planning did he have to come up with, when the opposing team runs up into the most fortified part of your D and with a new group of offensive linemen? Lol
We still gave up zero sacks… but at the same time we did nothing to help Will Howard too. Clear out routes take time and time means some pressure will be applied.

Where were the RPOs for fuck sake? When teams run zone you RPO them to death if you can’t hold up long enough to flood them.

There’s ways to attack zone.

My expectations of a solid game plan and the staffs ability to adjust mid game (or even season) have cratered under his leadership. Equally as frustrating as a fan is that we'll never get answers to any tough questions and we're left wondering what the hell they were seeing and thinking.

Between his pregame interview with Oregon and this weekends mess it's obvious the job is too big for him.

He made it to 4th qtr with a chance to win which is what he said pregame before both losses. He should have said we are coming for scUMs soul and are winning .

I have to say I am fully back on board with this team guys.

I think we can win it and frankly I think we will. I don’t know why I think that and the odds are we won’t.

However we rebounded vs UGA 2 years ago and I think we’ll do the same this year. Few reasons why..

1. We will likely have a first game at home.

2. We now have 3 weeks to get healthy. We all forget but we haven’t had a break since September. Talk about a poor layout of our schedule. We haven’t been able to get our legs back. We haven’t been able to address tendencies. Literally no chance to adjust. Which leads me to..

3. We now have three weeks to get our OL rested and on the same page. We have now had 4 different starting OL combinations. No shit we couldn’t handle the best DL we’ll play all year. Which leads me to..

4. We won’t play another team that can affect us like TCUN. There’s no team out there with a front like TCUN and that includes everyone in the SEC. So the one area where we can be hurt (our OL) I don’t think there’s another team out there that can do that.

The only question is will we blow it. Will we miss field goals, will we have a bad penalty that negatives or gives a big play, will we turn the ball over? If those things go in our direction we can fucking win it all.

The message to the players should be simple. You want to avenge the TCUN loss? Want to give TCUN the finger and plant our flag? Then go take their title from them because guess what they aren’t there to defend their title.

Btw- there’s only one matchup I don’t want in the playoffs and that’s Indiana. The reason why is we mocked them after we won. We embarrassed them with a late minute score and then we mocked them on the way out. Would we win? Ugh I think so but damn would it be a tough out.

I’m always on board with the team ..not coaching staff and not certain players which I won’t criticize. The team can win but they have a lot to overcome.

They do.

First things first we really need to be #8 and play at home vs a presumed #9 Tennessee. If we get that we will win that game and then we will get Oregon in a rematch. It’s hard to win that game twice guys.

If we somehow get through that then lookout because we have all the confidence we need.

There’s just two major hurdles.

1. Do we get to be at home or not first round.
2. Are we going to just play to our strengths

Agree, I brought this up after the game. This whole get to the 4th quarter with the chance to win is such bullshit. It’s a negative mentality and he needs to stop with it.

If he isn’t going to talk about giving it our all and taking the fight to them or leaving it all on the field, then just don’t fucking say anything at all.

Ok, now that I’ve had some time to reflect, I think we keep Day. I feel he will turn this around. Why?
1. Don’t forget those 3 previous losses came from cheating
2 I’ve heard a thousand times “throw out the records” but when an underdog actually wins everyone is aghast
3. This isn’t a Cooper situation. I’m proud of this team and the way they represent the OSU community. I borderline hated Cooper’s teams
Day just lost to a FAR worse team than any one of Cooper's 10 losses.
