HC Ryan Day (2019 B1G Media COY)

No one ever said he was bad at his old job.

It's the new one that's looking kind of worrisome.

Im a Day supporter and would prefer he stay as HC.

That said, there have been multiple issues that I think he needs to own, and it certainly makes you wonder if he needs to relinquish some of his playcalling duties to be more “in tune” elsewhere.

It’s the little stuff for me. 2 years in a row I feel special teams contributed heavily to our losses. In 2021 it was the ridiculous decision to have Fleming return kicks in place of an injured Emeka. Fleming looked awful the week before in being able to catch the kick-offs clean, and sure enough to open”The Game” in 2021 he bobbles the opening kickoff and we start inside our 10 yard line. beyond not being able to catch the ball clean he looked ridiculously awkward returning kicks anyways. Fast forward to this year and we’re trying to convert a LB (Chip) to a return man and sure enough he can’t cleanly catch a kick-off (obviously this wasn’t the Michigan game). It’s frustrating as hell to me.

In this “Game” we had (2) opportunities to put Michigan on their 1 yard line if our gunners do their job. They were spectacularly awful on both kicks as the ball beat them to the endzone.

Jesse Micro intentionally kicks it rugby style from midfield so the opposing team avoids mishandling a bouncing ball. He did a masterful job on both but our team was never in position to make the play.

The second opportunity actually infuriated me. The gunner on that play happened to be Fleming and although we know Micro kicks it rugby style, he was somehow duped by Michigan’s returner that he was going to fair catch it at the 20ish. So Fleming is in a hand battle with Michigan blocker trying to fight to fight back to the Michigan player he thinks is going to make a fair catch. Meanwhile the ball is rolling directly into the endzone.

The lack of awareness was astonishing to me and it’s a play that would have Nick Saban or Kirby Smart directly in their players faces asking “what the fuck are you doing?” as their faces nearly explode.

It’s those little details where I’m concerned his lack of involvement within the game is sorely missed. Great coaches are pretty much aware of everything…..Day has shown he’s a great QB developer but his game management is pretty curious at times to put it mildly. When to go for a 2pt conversion, clock management, etc.

And those little details absolutely add up.

So you also think he should give up play calling to focus on the "whole" game.

We need a petition. And if he doesn't trust Wilson, then you just have to show him the door.

I’m not sure I want him giving up all play-calling but I think there’s a happy medium. Urban Meyer used to be intimately involved in the offense and have veto power with the OC’s when he wanted it.

I think Day is similar to Andy Reid in that they’re just intellectually superior on offensive side and that is where a majority of their focus goes. But he’ll never be a top 3-5 coach unless he masters other aspects of the game including Game Management, Special Teams, and marrying the offensive gameplan to the defensive gameplan so it’s a more cohesive game strategy.

Don’t forget his refusal to officially challenge calls on the field. On one of those INTs, Stroud’s knee was down before he released the ball - in my recollection. On the TV screen, we also thought the UM player touched the ball and OSU recovered, but it was definitely worth a second look.

Day needs to show more emotion on the sidelines. Not Woody emotion, but more. He needs to use a bad call by the refs to motivate his players. He needs to go back to the bench and lift them when they need it. He needs to lead and leadership is about much more than intellect, it's about heart and soul.

Is wet yourself level panic not an emotion?

It is going to say a lot in my opinion, when it comes time for guys to declare for the draft (like Eichenberg) and whether they want to come back to beat ttun or want to go pro. If a bunch of people leave I would sound the alarm bells loudly. That doesn't mean guys aren't good enough to play but it's going to tell me about their confidence in this staff to get it done or not, while making them all better players.

I get what you’re saying, I do. But Day & Co. recruiting pitch is getting guys to the NFL in minimum time. It brings in talent from around the world, not just Ohio. Now, it appears from the outside looking in that Day hasn’t instilled the “ttun above all else mindset.” And to give credit, that’s hard to do with NIL, a 12-team playoff and no divisions (on the horizon). Players are no longer going to schools just based on tradition and academics, they are getting a taste of big money right out of high school and flashing their talent for a bigger (NFL contract) is this new era. I think college football is going through an entire course correction and Ohio State happens to be effected because we are one of the big boys on the block.

That’s why he should give up playcalling. He is emotional enough on the sideline..because the Offensive players need someone to get them going. Playcalling can’t be emotional. For example I’ll show everyone how tough we are.

Bucks may not be far off from a rematch. A chance for redemption or a chance to lose twice and be sent to the depths of hell for an offseason and maybe longer. I don’t want to even think about that.

Definitely a scary proposition but you find out real quick what you got. Embrace the moment, it’s why you’re at OSU.

Either way, it doesn't cost us a whole season to find out.

Come on Day. Listen to Walken. Seriously. Absorb every word of that.

Say what you will about Lincoln Riley’s teams but at least he embraces the shootout style of today’s game and empties the clip every offensive drive. It’s full-go, hang 50 and keep up. Day and Co. seem content to dilly dally with no urgency or killstreak.
Time to laugh at me. Turns out Lincoln Riley can piss down his leg on national TV with the best of them. Maybe THE best at it to be honest.

(Riley did go 3-5 on 4th down so he was aggressive which was my big issue with Day in this post…losing his edge)
