Head Coach
No one ever said he was bad at his old job.
It's the new one that's looking kind of worrisome.
Im a Day supporter and would prefer he stay as HC.
That said, there have been multiple issues that I think he needs to own, and it certainly makes you wonder if he needs to relinquish some of his playcalling duties to be more “in tune” elsewhere.
It’s the little stuff for me. 2 years in a row I feel special teams contributed heavily to our losses. In 2021 it was the ridiculous decision to have Fleming return kicks in place of an injured Emeka. Fleming looked awful the week before in being able to catch the kick-offs clean, and sure enough to open”The Game” in 2021 he bobbles the opening kickoff and we start inside our 10 yard line. beyond not being able to catch the ball clean he looked ridiculously awkward returning kicks anyways. Fast forward to this year and we’re trying to convert a LB (Chip) to a return man and sure enough he can’t cleanly catch a kick-off (obviously this wasn’t the Michigan game). It’s frustrating as hell to me.
In this “Game” we had (2) opportunities to put Michigan on their 1 yard line if our gunners do their job. They were spectacularly awful on both kicks as the ball beat them to the endzone.
Jesse Micro intentionally kicks it rugby style from midfield so the opposing team avoids mishandling a bouncing ball. He did a masterful job on both but our team was never in position to make the play.
The second opportunity actually infuriated me. The gunner on that play happened to be Fleming and although we know Micro kicks it rugby style, he was somehow duped by Michigan’s returner that he was going to fair catch it at the 20ish. So Fleming is in a hand battle with Michigan blocker trying to fight to fight back to the Michigan player he thinks is going to make a fair catch. Meanwhile the ball is rolling directly into the endzone.
The lack of awareness was astonishing to me and it’s a play that would have Nick Saban or Kirby Smart directly in their players faces asking “what the fuck are you doing?” as their faces nearly explode.
It’s those little details where I’m concerned his lack of involvement within the game is sorely missed. Great coaches are pretty much aware of everything…..Day has shown he’s a great QB developer but his game management is pretty curious at times to put it mildly. When to go for a 2pt conversion, clock management, etc.
And those little details absolutely add up.
