HC Ryan Day (2019 B1G Media COY)

If it’s possible he needs to find his Venables.

A top shelf DC who isn’t a careerist looking to move on after 1-2 years.

Not easy but that’s Dabo’s real strength. Gotta figure something out.
Need to hire a coach who has high school sons, then. Venables will have both sons on the team next year, a sophomore and freshman. That's one reason he has stuck around so long. That, and he loves the area, is best friends with Dabo, and he makes a good wage as DC. Heck, I love the area too. Just hard being a Buckeye fan amongst all these Tiger fans.

That's what still kills me... 3rd down and 5 and we can't get anything to set up a 4th down play. It was there to ice away and we failed to do it.
If the offense was sputtering and the defense was locking everything down, I can understand the call. The idea being that we'd pin Clemson deep, try to force a 3-and-out, and then just run the clock down.

Instead, Clemson gets four consecutive 1st downs and scores the go-ahead TD.

For whatever reason, the coaches didn't have the confidence that the offense could get 4 yards when they were averaging over 6 yards-per-play. Even if we fail to convert on 4th down, we'd manage to use up some time and still have Clemson around their own 40 yard line. Seems like a better set of odds...

Trust the coaches and all that, but that is the biggest head-scratcher of the game for me.

Does anybody recall how many timeouts we had at that point in the game? Is that maybe why the Coaches decided to punt?

Still had two timeouts at that point. Seemed anytime they wanted it, Dobbins was open for a dump off out of the backfield.

2 time outs. I honestly understand what we were thinking considering the defense had been playing well.

Would have been a hell of a time for a boot leg throw in the flats to the TE. Instead we run straight ahead for 1 yard (I think). We were ultra aggressive all day but when we needed it the most we sat back.

Yep, only two completions to tight ends the entire game. And if i recall they were both in the first half.

Okay... so let's play this out... why wouldn't the coaches give JF one more snap knowing that the defense would make a stop if the offense doesn't convert?

Only reason is if the coaches wanted to avoid a turnover at that point, which seems like a wild worst-case scenario to try and cover a two-point lead with three minutes to go.

And had we had a 3 point lead maybe we go for it...ugh just so many things went wrong in this one.

This one will always hurt me. This was the most talented team I'd ever seen in college football. I had the remote in my hand for the last drive because If we failed to score I was going to turn the TV off.

The second Justin threw the pick I turned the TV off and just sat there. I could not believe a team that talented could have so many negative go wrong. Shit 2 hours prior I was screaming as Wade blasted Lawrence. There was no flag, we were dominating, and we were in complete control. Then it all changed.

Ryan's preparation, game plans, recruiting, and staff hiring have all been elite though. I am 100% confident we run the table next year and get back into the playoffs. The futures bright but this one will always hurt.

Day will never punt inside 40 again. Play call for 4 down territory..leave it in JFs hands.
True but I honestly don't blame Day for the call. Got exactly the punt he wanted and the defense was playing well all game. I don't think anyone has driven 90+ yards on this defense all year. Played the odds and he got burned. It happens.

Yep... the odds were in our favor. But why not take another snap and burn a little more clock? He'd still get the punt he wanted if we didn't convert. Sure, the defense would have to stop Clemson from going 70+ yards instead of 90+, but that couldn't have been the deciding factor.

Of all the missed calls / bad calls / what-ifs / dropped passes / blown routes / etc etc etc, this one call is really the one that haunts me. It's the one outcome we really could have controlled, and we had plenty of time to think it through. But, the Coach went another way and chose to give the ball back to the team that had basically scored 21 straight points. I can't really blame him, and I'm not questioning his strategy, but I don't really understand either.

My feed, which already had been up-and-down, finally fully died just before the three-minute mark. That was just before the punt. I thought for sure Day would go for it. I was telling everybody: ok, here's the game and season... all we need is 4 yards and one pin, Rodney! Next thing I see on the TV is a frozen shot of JF with his hands covering his face... worst feeling ever!
