Doesn't explain the utter disappointment of the defense though. This should be an all-time great D, yet it looks like the 2022 edition

I know this precludes his formal job description and agreed objectives and I suppose the devil is in those details, but here is his contract if anyone doesn't believe LJB. While there is no reference to growing the brand, it is clear that he is responsible for playing a promotional role in media relations, behave ethically, and indirectly help maintain brand equity:

I'd strongly disagree. We started exceptionally slow against Akron. We were awful in the first half against Marshall. Even the Michigan State game had some underlying concerns. Offensively we were average against Iowa.
Oregon should've been a "W" but too many mental mistakes to overcome. Oregon is good, but not great....if OSU plays to expectations they win that game by 2+ scores.
Nebraska, coming off a bye week, was an absolute train wreck. Really one of the worst wins I can recall as an OSU fan. That's a team that got pasted by a back-up Indiana QB 52-6 last weekend. And Nebraska is just as injured as OSU and starting a true freshman at QB to boot.
And to top it off, Day acts like it's all part of the plan..."another game we wanted to get to the fourth quarter where our guys are prepared to win". He does realize he can be up 52-6 like Indiana and get back-ups gametime, right?? Or you can go out and dominate Oregon and show why OSU's collective spent $21M on this roster.
I hope to god, OSU finally shows up against Penn State, but I'm just not seeing it. I think they take control of the LOS, and beat us in a relatively low scoring game, where we question why OSU isn't doing more to push the ball downfield and get the ball to our elite WR's. We'll see....

I can't agree with this, and I'll cite Reid Fragel as an example again, here. OSU has plenty of talent on this roster to do some patchwork over the Simmons injury. The issue, IMO, is there isn't belief right now.....Meyer ingrained a toughness into OSU's offensive line that is severely lacking right now.
The other issue is, there are ways to gameplan around the loss of an OT.....the play-calling has been marginal at best.
That said, its the mentality of the team, that is a sore spot right now. From all accounts from those in the stadium Saturday, there's like (15) anecdotal stories of OSU just not being prepared or invested in the game against Nebraska.
No communication on the sidelines between players, no motivational speeches by coaches or players.....hell, it's been reported Will Howard couldn't get a football to keep his arm warm in the 4th quarter and finally had to grab a "special teams" ball out of the net bc no one could locate a ball for him to stay loose with. How the fuck does that even happen??? Those are the issues that are so concerning....elite teams don't have trouble finding footballs for their starting QB to stay warmed up with. It's kind of a clown show right now and I think multiple guys have checked out.
As an FSU graduate, it reminds me of the gradual slip of Jimbo Fisher....I hope Day proves me wrong and I have to eat my words. There's just an underlying issue with this team that I believe will continue to show as we get into the meat of our schedule. Again, I'd love to be wrong....

I think the only thing that's been a true disappointment this year has been the defense. We all knew the O Line was thin and one bad break away from becoming a serious liability. But the D was legitimately elite, even historically good last year, depending on what metrics you were looking at. Barely lost any key contributors
It's a very good defense, but they do seem to have regressed relative to last year's performance. I'm not sure if it's teams just catching on to our general scheme/approach or the often talked about rift between defensive coaches.
Day still has everything ahead of him to accomplish this year, I don't think things are trending well, but it's all still there for the taking. He's built up enough good will. I don't know where things will stand at the end of the year, but he deserves support from the fan base while OSU is still competing.

Reid Fragel, Darryl Baldwin, Dawand Jones all have something that Jimmy Josh has, athleticism and upside.
There was zero hype or optimism regarding the OTs not named Jimmy going into the season, but everything else was so sexy, that no one talked about it very much.
as for urban, he won a title because of how Darryl baldwin, Curtis Grant and evan spencer punched above their weight. He deserves major credit for that but sustainability has always been a weakness for urban. I agree with the overall point of his tenacity and track record, but there's a pretty direct parallel to this.
A year after the NC, when they were loaded and added Braxton as a filler weapon on offense, they were a clunky mess, and the lack of a second tackle was one of the biggest reasons. Along with mental and schematic woes.
I agree with many of the schematic and mentality criticisms, but those won't magically produce solid let alone good OTs. It was well known that they mostly haven't recruited adequately let alone well at the position for many years now
frankly, they recruited no quality tackles they trusted, which is why they had to go to the portal in the first place. Maybe Armstrong or Montgomery get there someday, but overall they've come up empty a lot for many years that led to this.
Reid and Darryl are proof that you do not need to go star hunting on the offensive line. But you better not settle repeatedly.
Their depth at that position is not in the top 4 in the conference. That's inexcusable in a conference with only 1 other recruiting powerhouse and 2 others that are good not great.

This staff doesn't even bother to recruit or develop the best lineman from their own state. It's not that hard. Four of the best tackles in the nation are all from Ohio's 2022 class. Blake Miller (Clemson), Carter Smith (Indiana), Ryan Baer (Pitt), and Aamil Wagner (Notre Dame) are all second or third year starters and have been dominant this season.

which gets back to the lack of star power needed. You need competent recruiting, development and depth.
Fragel, Baldwin were not coveted NFL commodities. They do not require another high NFL talent like they lost in Jimmy to succeed at this level. You do not need to (and generally cannot) stockpile Paris or NPF level recruits to succeed at OT ( bama got whipped by Michigan last year with 2 elite OT recruits that were not up to their standards). You need solid to good, and enough of them that you can hit miss more than you'd like and still be fine.

God damn guys, don't need to make me feel better all at once. Sounds like they'd be lucky to finish 9-3 and Day's program is toxic ooze. Not being sarcastic, you all know more than me, but incompetent recruiting, development, coaching, scheme...are they doing anything right? Sounds like we're about to witness a complete collapse of the program.

They're doing 95% of things right, and at a really high level. Everyone has major flaws this year. Miami is laughable. Georgia is occasionally good. Texas less consistently. Bama is doing an homage to a store brand version of 2013 OSU. Before injury, one of OSU's 2-3 flaws was not a liability. But football is a harsh game and now it's a giant issue to shore up.
