HC Ryan Day (2019 B1G Media COY)

You need a OL that works. You don’t need 5 stars..college football is full of OL that work without 5 star individual talent.
Nebraska was down to their 3rd string RT yesterday.

PSU
Georgia
Oregon
TN
Bama
Mizzou
Kansas St
Texas A&M

All have had defensive or offensive lineman years ended by injury. It’s common place in college football. They’re all dealing with the same shit….yes, it sucks, but u have to game plan around it. Everyone is dealing with it. You gotta coach up what you have and game plan around it.

Coach Day doesn’t get a pass bc “injury”….its why they get 85 scholarships and have a $21M pay-roll.

The performance has been disgusting in 2024.

I like this comparison bc it also hinges on the kids being brought in.

We all want first rd talent coming in as 5 stars. You’d be idiotic not to want that.

But OSU’s #1 recruiting pitch under Day has been NFL development. And he delivers on it.

But the focus is not national titles. And that shows as well. These kids just aren’t performing with a passion or level of cohesiveness that shows they actually care about winning games.

Obviously they’re not going out there to lose intentionally or look like shit…..but they aren’t going out there to dominate the guy across from them and bleed for the university.

Huge culture problem in the WHAC right now….

I'm not there in practices or games. I'm not a football coach. I have supported Coach Day and realize he has no reason to worry about what I think. I'm just a fan. But I do hold an OSU alumni award and bleed scarlet and gray. I also know quite a bit about culture (PhD) and leadership.

Most experts agree that Ohio State is the most talented team in college football. The football cost center receives $20 million to support salary and earnings for coaches and staff. The players get another $20 million in NIL support. Add to that the support of University senior leadership, and Coach Day sits atop a program with few peers, if any.

So, it is surprising that the strategies, execution, passion, and creativity displayed by coaches and players are falling so far short of expectations. Ohio State was out-coached again this week. The team is once again falling like trees in the forest, which you guys tell me probably is strength and conditioning. The offensive and defensive line play is surprisingly below expectations. One understands that there are injuries but, once again, so many opportunities to rotate players into the lineup with the 1s were missed again this year. Poor Zen didn't know if he was Arthur or Martha against Nebraska.

We can all agree that players need to be equipped with ways to deal with stress before it piles up and distress impacts on behavior on the field and in real life. That said, players and coaches need to experience stress to perform optimally (i.e., eustress). Boos raining down on the field and side-eye walking across campus are not the stuff of eustress.

It isn't that Ohio State should fail to appreciate, or even fire, a coach who will get that 10-2 record every year. It's that settling for that record means bringing into focus how much it has to cost to get coaching staff and players to achieve that end.

After all, "For unto whomsoever much is given, of him shall much be required; and to whom men have committed much, of him they will ask the more." Luke 12:48

For more than 20 years, many of you have observed my posting. I do not hold extreme views. My friends and opinions come from across the spectrum. To the best of my ability, I have tried to walk the BP talk....we do not bash coaches or players on BP. I do not bash anyone.

However, during the Nebraska game, I called myself to account after I came close to bashing the coaching staff. How long was John Cooper allowed to blow up the Buckeye brand with his inability to win big games because a clear successor was not apparent?

You can hear the talk going from national title or bust to mumbled words. The other day, a commentator on TV somewhere said that Ryan Day needed to unfuck himself and his team. After watching the last two games, I must say that I am firmly of the belief that he should be fired if he cannot. Even if I don't mention this again, because we don't bash coaches or players, I thought I should write this.

I still think that Coach Day can get this right, but it is far beyond a wake-up call after these last two games. Let’s not do John Cooper again.

Yeah but the trick is to be able to evaluate which high school 3 star OL has a high enough upside that you can develop into someone that will be able to "do the job" in his 3rd, 4th, and/or 5th year, etc.; which Ohio State hasn't been very good at recently. With the new NCAA football scholarship limit of 105 going into effect next year; Ohio State could bring in several more OL on scholarship which would improve their chances of having at least 5 OL that "make the grade". Those that don't "make the grade" can be advised accordingly and will probably want to transfer out to a school where they believe that they could get "playing time", etc.

Urban said his Buckeyes were an offensive line driven team

Day coaches like his background - as a QB and thus wants a QB and WR driven team.

It doesn’t work like that coach.

The fact we didn’t land a portal OL is inexcusable considering how much talent there is everywhere else and how thin the OL room is.

Just raid the MAC for a couple of the top 3rd and 4th year guys every year. I read an article about Toledo recruiting those 3-star players with the pitch- Come here and play for a couple of years rather than waiting your turn at a big school. When you are ready we'll help you transfer.

I think the goal needs to be to have at least 8 dudes that can play on the OL, but your offense can't go to shit when you lose 1 player.

But we did and he’s playing center.

National titles are cool.

I really don't give two dead flies, smashed, about national championships.

Beat TSUN. Win the B1G. Get into the playoff where there will be some interesting games against non-traditional opponents and compete.

If he beats TSUN this year, he gets another shot in AA. If he wins that, extend him 3 years.

He hangs 100 on them he gets a lifetime deal worth a bajillion.

Just sayin': (Yeah I know this is just the preseason All-MAC Teams); but sadly it looks like Toledo may not have any OL that Ohio State would be interested in this season.

This. They are raising the scholarship limit to 1,000 or something next year. Scoop up 4 or 5 OL from the transfer portal every year, see who pans out.
