HC Ryan Day (2019 B1G Media COY)

Here comes the Vrabel talk......

IIRC he wasn't a fan of recruiting. I'd imagine the current NIL landscape wouldn't excite him either.
He mentioned several times when he was here that he didn't like recruiting. I imagine you're right about the NIL climate too. Not to mention the guy has been a Head Coach in the NFL for about a decade now. I can't see him having any interest in coming back to college ball.

The issue with that argument, IMO, is that poor decisions or late decisions have nothing to do with his ankle. He's throwing balls late because he's nervous and he can't read a defense fast enough. If you're going to be a QB in this system you have to be able to make anticipation throws and I don't think McCord did that once all year. The majority of the time he's throwing guys closed rather than throwing them open by making decisions way too late.
Kyle is also to blame for the numerous dropped passes throughout the season as well. Even with his bad ankle he should have been able to catch those balls as well. If he was only more athletic.

Having thought about this for a while now, this state of misery after losing to those fuck twats, one of the questions on one of the buckeye podcasts that has stuck with me was: what coaches on this staff would land at an elite level program if the WHAC blew up tomorrow? Hartline... and then who?

To me, Day is the one who hired these jabornies and this is where I think someone like Urban or Tressel who have been around the block at multiple spots probably have a higher success rte than someone like Day who bounced around the NFL before landing with Urban. My point is I think one of both Tressel and Urbans biggest challenges/downfalls is hiring/promoting the right coaches, especially as the good ones are plucked away, and thats one of the things having head coaching experience teaches you but with Day Hafley was a great hire but what coaches are getting plucked away?

Day can make some moves, and I think he needs to rely on the guys around the WHAC to help him, hopefully better things are ahead but I see so many people talking about get rid of Parker and get rid of LJ etc and I don't disagree at this stage I am willing to give Day a pass and hope for the best with hiring new coaches because I need to cope but if everyone is so afraid of "grass isn't always greener" why dont they feel the same way about the position coaches? I should be afraid of it all unraveling if I follow that logic, right?

The only coach who wouldn't end anywhere (at least not a high level FBS school) is Fleming. Maybe Dennis too, but his job is a mystery to me.

Management of staff is definitely one of the hardest things for a HC. Tressel was consistent but didn't make enough changes to address obvious needs. Meyer would make amazing hires and awful ones. His inability to handle coaching changes was the main thing holding him back from having a Sabanesque career. Also, I do feel that way about position coaches, just not to the same degree. Meyer couldn't maintain quality and consistency in his staff and it really hurt the program after the NC. Unless the coach is underperforming or there's a homerun hire available, I want coaches staying for 2-5 years. Especially someone like Knowles, Eliano, and Walton who all keep building on what they did the previous season.

Right now I think the staff is very good, but not great. You can upgrade from Fleming immediately by adding another defensive coach, and if Day is going to be training the only other OC on staff, he must have someone else who can help him. Right now that leaves Dennis as the odd man out. He might do a good job, but you can upgrade to someone with experience as a coordinator. Only other coach would be LJ. It's hard to push a legendary coach out the door, but with Scott decommitting and his age, this is the time to rip the bandaid off and find a Hartline for the defense.

Listening to DP while I was driving today and he had former Bama QB McElroy on the show. I guess he’s on ESPN and has his own Podcast. Anyway, I digress. DP asked him about Saban and his locker room management for big games. McElroy said his demeanor didn’t change from game to game and that he was the one making sure the players weren’t overhyped. He talked to the players about executing and doing their job.

I found this interesting in our discussions about Day and how he approaches the big games. Is this the approach Day is taking? Throwing it out there for folks thoughts.

Clemson 2020 and Georgia last year was a Day we don’t see much. He was fired up. Fist pumping, out on the field, ready to win the game himself. Reminded me Urban and his psychotic level of winning.

He looked tight again in The Game. Frozen by the moment. Spent more time whining to the refs than getting the troops ready for the next battle. He seemed scared or content to let the Game come to him instead of snatching it.

Can’t speak to his locker room speeches or prep. Just what I see and hear in public or the sideline. It seems like he says the right things about what The Game means and the extra prep but it doesn’t show.

It’s 365 days for this one, man. And we mean it.

When Cooper was brought in to beat tsun, the braintrust at the time didn't look at his record in the Arizona State vs Arizona game. He routinely lost to inferior Arizona teams in that one too. Point being, some guys no matter how nice, how smart, how talented or capable just do not thrive in certain situations.

You keep putting a guy in big pressure situations who struggles in big pressure situations and you are going to keep getting the same results.

We're asking a fish to climb a tree. When he inevitably fails, some people get mad about the lack of tree climbing and some people get mad because they want to believe with all their heart that this fish, can damn well climb that tree.

Ok, this is one of your better analogies of the situation because I now have the absurd vision of all of us dumb monkeys standing around shrugging, saying "why fish no climb tree?"

This off season:

Lesmerises and Landis were talking about an excellent idea. Bring Tress in as a Scum coach and consultant, just to evaluate Scum on a weekly basis and set the strategize a plan for that game. Also he helps with the intangibles of putting the players in the correct mind set.

Day obviously has a difficult time relinquishing control and is apparently frightened of mistakes. Which coincidentally tends to cause mistakes.

I hope he stops trusting other people with handling all of some things, like special teams and defense, and start being the manager with his hands in small measure in every component of the team. I hope he finds a way to give up the play calling. Even though he is talented (or was super talented) with offensive play calling, the whole game seems disjointed every year. I think he needs to pull everything together and manage. Plus he needs more involved in NIL and portal stuff as well.

I hope he evolves.
