HC Ryan Day (2019 B1G Media COY)

Unpredictability. The defense and offense seemed to be too predictable in The Game. Sign stealing or just calling plays in similar order through the year? Was it Day or someone else?

On offense, it’s not the order of the plays because OSU adjusts based on what they think coverage is. Where it hurts OSU is when they get the coverage wrong and CJ’s post snap reads don’t catch the error, or the defense also knows what OSU likes to adjust to. The defenses are essentially guessing how the OSU O likes to adjust to specific coverages. Day has installed some counters, but they still need more diversity.

On defense, they’ve broken tendencies and unfortunately broken the plays along with it.

Friar Occam tells me to ask the question;

did Ryan Day have some elaborate subterfuge working all year long that blew up in his face during The Game like an Acme product? …OR….is he a mediocre coach who failed to adapt?

The answer that requires the least amount of assumptions is…..

JSN was more than just another #1 WR. The passing offense, at least in the Rose Bowl, was designed around getting him mismatches by moving him all over and using the chemistry between he and CJ to routinely complete crazy throws and get first downs.

... but we do have another #1 who has had amazing chemistry.
If you can't switch from JSN to MH, are you saying we're going to suck for next 10 years because JSN is the only option?
It's a coaching problem, not a personnel problem.

For whatever its worth, I don't think you can switch from a JSN type receiver to an MH Jr type receiver. They are different players.

And yes, I do believe there is a stubbornness - all football coaches are stubborn - when it comes to remodeling the offense. I do, however, think things were attempted during the season, I just don't think whatever those things were, worked very well.

You don't think you can switch that between 2nd game in the year and Thanksgiving?

Strange. I remember switching from a Heisman hopeful dual threat to a zone read manager in Fall. Then he fell in The Game and we switched to a Roethlesberger deep ball prototype.
Coaches were able to COMPLETELY retool the offense, successfully, for 3 different QBs in one season. Sometimes in a single week.

But now we're making excuses for going from a preseason Biletnikoff hopeful to the guy who should have actually won it ... and that's too much for the Coaches to handle?

That's some cope. That's same cope as the fools who thought Day was saving the playbook for Thanksgiving.
The only difference is that it hides behind an unfalsifiable hypothetical.
