HC Ryan Day (2019 B1G Media COY)

Ryan Day is not obsessed with scUM.

I don't think this is the case after last year. From what I saw, Day was 'too' obsessed with ttun, it's just his approach with that obsession was obviously wrong.

I heard earlier in the week that Day had moved Senior Tackle from Game week to during bowl practice. That, in and of itself, isn't really an issue. But he said that he did that so they could continue to 'focus' on game preparation. This raised some concern to me. It sounded like he was trying to squeeze every second of practice time to 'prepare' for The Game. I feared that so much focus on preparation might have the team playing tight, which we have seen Day do a few times in big games. I said as much in a replay to a tweet sent by Tyvis Powell.

That's the game I saw after half way through the 1st quarter. I don't think it was lack of preparation that made the defensive players be out of position several times. It looked like they were so amped up that they were biting too hard, trying to make a big play. It also didn't seem like lack of preparation that caused Stroud to stare down field for several seconds each play and often throw late when he did attempt a pass. Looked to me like he was trying really really hard to make a big play and not make a mistake. Tight as a drum.

The complete change up of the defensive strategy is also another example. The 'balls out' blitz on almost every play was clearly a response to last years plungering is the kind of thing I would expect Rutgers to do against us. Reeks of desperation and I don't think it was necessary. That also took a lot of preparation.

Being prepared is obviously very necessary in modern football, but you have to get your team playing fast and with controlled rage as well. For ttun, you have all pre-season, and at least some amount of practice time throughout the year to introduce ttun concepts. The team seemed to be playing tight as a drum for most of the game on both sides of the ball. So afraid to make mistakes that nothing happened on offense or bad things happened on defense.

What bugs me the most two days later is I'm not sure how Day gets out of this. Someone made the comment on the game thread that NEXT years game was not a must win for Day. While that is obviously true, I think that THIS years game was the must win. The pressure next year will be off the charts. Does Day have the ability to completely change up his approach? Less X's and O's and more attitude or more fun? Is it in his DNA to even do so? Is the team still on board? Everything they have done for an entire year was to get back to that game and win it and it's failed in the most spectacular fashion. If you're a player, do you still trust your coach to put you an a position to succeed, if you do trust your coach do you trust yourself?

Big questions. This loss was bigger than last years, much bigger. If Day can turn it around he will have earned his fat contract in a huge way and begin his journey toward legendary status. I obviously hope he does. That would a fun journey to watch. Right now I'm skeptical.

"You never lose to those fuckers. Ever."

As much as I appreciate Valenti's viewpoint, it's almost as if he is setting TTUN up for the big let down. There is no way that TTUN is better than UGA, based on what I saw when they played TN. I never bought that OSU was going to beat UGA this year. I saw too many areas of weakness.

And no, Valenti, OSU is not broken, however, they need to fix some fundamental issues that are destroying our teams chances for success.

Im not gonna lie….I won my biggest wager of the year on UGA covering vs Michigan last year. It was free money.

Mostly bc Big 10 teams just don’t see that level of athleticism across the board. It took OSU getting wrecked by Clemson to understand what those rosters down South look like.

Michigan knows now. That’s a big learning moment for them. I think Michigan vs UGA is a much more competitive game this time around.

I don't know. TTUN isn't built for that type of game. UGA's defense is super fast, and their offense is good enough to pull away. Even though there have been games that UGA didn't look stellar in, when they turn on the motors there isn't alot anybody can do.

OSU had some fundamental issues this season that fans knew existed, and everybody who plays OSU knows exist, that would not be as easy as hiring a new DC and OL coach. You just don't neglect those two areas for 2 seasons and think it can be turned around overnight.

Finally the D is starting to recruit better and the OL is moving in some sort of positive direction.

I predict the same result will happen when TTUN plays UGA. It may not happen as fast, but it will be a curb stomp.

Ryan Day is not obsessed with scUM. He’s built a team to win the NC. If tOSU played in the SEC we’d be close to Georgia. Playing Mich is a different animal and even in the SEC, we wouldn’t have a play maker at QB we’d have a thrower… Our roster with Caleb Williams would be a nightmare even with our limitations play calling. He uses all the tools he has..arm feet confidence bravado. Our QB has arm confidence cool ..

You mean like Justin Fields?

Personally, this is the only question I have going forward is how he (d)evolves his QB selection and coaching.

Culture certainly matters, but if you build a culture solely for its own sake, you get the Jacksonville Jaguars last year. The football part matters and the football part is why most coaches get hired and fired.

Anyway obviously its not an earth shattering observation that a QB who can do about 400 yds (net) on the ground and can show enough that the defense has to account for him in the run game and also can make positive contributions on broken plays as well as taking free yards is going to be a lot tougher to defend. (Emphasis on the run game benefit in bad weather).

My point is, everyone knows this, question is will he make the adjustment?

(There are other adjustments he could make instead I guess but those would actually be bigger changes)

I just don't think Ohio State should be anyone's first head coaching job, and said that last year.

Don't tell me his won/loss record. Most coaches could rack up those wins on talent advantage alone. Show me what you can do when you don't have an overwhelming talent advantage in big games. Outside of one heroic Justin Fields performance versus Clemson, what has Day done? He's gotten punked by Harbaugh twice. That much I know.

Lol SCUM is fucked against UGA. You know how that game is going to go? Exactly like how the Illinois game and the first half of the OSU game went only UGA probably isn’t going to pee down their legs.

I think there really only need to be a couple of changes:
1. Day needs to let Kevin call the plays from the box.
2. They need to make QB run the 3rd or 4th read in a dozen or so plays. Should never be the first or second read. That will get 3-5 runs a game.
3. Give urban and tress each an office in the WHAC. And get each of them to give a speech or run a practice 3-4 times a year focused on the game. Day doesn’t get the rivalry, so he needs to find someone that does.

Good post.
Everyone is excited by Riola and rightly so.
But he simply isn’t capable of being any threat whatsoever with his feet.
Don’t I’ve ever seen a D1 prospect at qb that looks slower.
If we didn’t have McCord and Brown in the pipeline or they were a year younger I’d go after the Ga Tech qb that just hit the portal.

Too the contrary of people here who say Day doesn’t get the rivalry, I think he more than gets it. See the “this is why you came here” snippet.

I think he was so hyper focused on not losing, that he puckered when things got rough, just like Cooper. The TTUN player on the sideline saying we knew who they were was eerily reminiscent of the same comments from TTUN players in the Cooper games.

There’s a difference between playing to win and playing not to lose. Day needs to play to win.

JT opposite of Day … he controlled everything up to the game but the game he unleashed them. He loosened the reins and showed faith that his players were prepared and wouldn’t let each other down. Day looked like he was herding cats on the sideline Saturday.
