Society.

Society has decided to accept when a black person uses the n word for almost any reason and to not accept when a white person uses the n word for almost any reason.

The evidence for this is the varying levels of outrage expressed in different situations; which you and others like you constantly complain about- thus this thread.

I think you're definitely in the minority. MLK was fighting the whole gauntlet of racism, and that word was a huge part of that gauntlet. I'd say that if he were alive today and you asked him he'd tell you he'd wish that word would vanish from existence. And no racial slur "empowers" anyone...

Go back and re-read the part I bolded, which specifically dealt with Jewish people as you stated. And not all of society--not even close--has accepted the use of the N-word uttered by blacks...

The only thing I bitch about is double standards, whether it deals with the use of slurs, media portrayal of inter-racial violence and gay rights, etc.

I just talked to the three black folks in my immediate section, and asked them specifically about the use of the word. One is a retired USAF guy in his early 50s, and the other two are junior enlisted in their early 20s. The retired guy won't even mention the word, even in examples (I've known him for about eight years and I've yet to hear him utter the word)...he flat loathes the word. The two junior enlisted guys don't see the word as heinous as does the retired guy, but both said the don't use the word themselves, even off duty and when amongst only blacks.

Truly the thing that bothers me the most about it is not that African Americans have a super word that only they can use and others cannot. I couldn't care less about that. It's that it makes quite literally zero sense. I could not even fathom being a part of a group of people who were oppressed, and the oppressors had one word that they used to denigrate my people. And then instead of being disgusted by this word, I choose to make it part of my everyday speech. And not only that, but refer to myself and others who are also part of this group of people by this word. My wife is Chinese, and I have to say I've never heard her call anyone nor be called by anyone else a "chink." Could you imagine someone saying "Yo what up my Chink!" Or "My Spic!" It truly could not make less sense.

Well...my ancestry is Irish and I'm a daywalker (not a true ginger but close)....I know I make fun of gingers and go the self-deprecation route when it comes to drinking and being Irish....

That said you won't see any Irish people calling each other Coal-Crackers or "Green Ni**ers" like some of those of English or other European ancestries have done in the past....

The word, when used by black folks, is not intended to be derogatory. Therefore when it's used by black folks white people have no basis for complaint.

The word, when used by most white folks, is intended to be derogatory. Therefore when it's used by white folks they should expect black folks to clout them. Or worse.

Hope this clears things up for everyone. White people have absolutely no right to complain when the black community co-opts a term of abuse and uses it as it damn well pleases. White people who then complain about the "double standard" brand themselves as clueless at best, and desperate at worst.

The thing is, it isn't just black folks using the word, as I mentioned in my post. It's mostly used (in my experience) by a generally disliked subgroup that typically is based in the poor black community, but becoming a very racially broad group (and even economically broad, to my great confusion). It's perfectly acceptable for a "thug/gangster/etc." white (or other race) guy to use the word or a derivation of it within and outside the group. The word's use is frowned upon, if not outright reviled outside that community, as it should be. I've yet to meet anyone outside the aforementioned group (or wannabes) that nonchalantly uses the word or even thinks it's perfectly acceptable for anyone to say.

I understand it's not used in a derogatory manner when they call themselves it. Does it take away the idiocy of calling oneself and others a term that was laid upon your ancestors by their slavers and was, is, and will always be used as a negative term when not used by black people? Uh, no. It's stupid.

And I get the point you're getting at. Essentially you're saying that white people are not black, and therefore do not have the ancestral right to use the term in the same way as black people or else in most cases it will be construed as being racist. But that doesn't make it any less ignorant and stupid on their part though to refer to themselves by the term. There really isn't a truly racist term that I'm aware of for a general white person, but going back to my example of Hispanics and Chinese, could you ever imagine them referring to themselves as 'Spics or Chinks? Maybe you know some that do, but I've never heard of that. Just doesn't make any sense. Or maybe I'm just too damn logical. If anyone here is Jewish, do you call yourself and friends Kikes?

Jews keep being brought up as a counterexample of a group that doesn't reappropriate epithets commonly used against them. That is an incorrect, at least to a certain extent.

That's not even the only example off the top of my head of this kind of thing occurring with various groups besides blacks. The word "yankee" was used a pejorative by the British but adopted as a positive word by people in early America. The gay community has adopted the word "queer". Rural and southern white folks have done the same with the word "redneck".

When a term like this is reappropriated by an ethnic group, it does not require universal acceptance or participation by members of that group in order for it to carry positive connotations among the people in that group who have chosen to adopt it. The "I know some black guys who think it's bad" argument does carry much weight for me, nor does the idea that there is a discussion that needs to take place about it within that group. African-Americans are not of a single mind (just like any other group of people), nor should they be expected to be even on this issue.
