Harrison remark, Intentional?

Those of you who think that the n-word is stupid, negative, and wrong no matter who uses it, and that anybody who does use it is an idiot who demeans themselves... I imagine you feel similarly about Washington DC's NFL team calling themselves the R*******, right? After all, nobody should be able use it, no matter who says they take a positive connotation from it, right?

I mean, as long as long as we are crusading against double standards and all.

Ok cool - black people can N-bomb each other with impunity and everyone else can stop bitching about the Redskins team name and logo. Sounds like a win-win deal to me.

does this really need the sarcasm font?

I mean, you can keep crying about reality and fighting the good fight if you want.

I will continue to find it humorous that this pisses you and Mili off so much.

Like I said, the debate about the word's use is something that can play out within the African American community.

In the mean time, everyone else can deal with it.
You're clueless as to my entire being in this thread, then. I'm not anywhere near pissed off about anything other than OH10's implications that I'm some kind of racist.....as if I'm fighting to use the word that I've gone to great lengths to not even come close to saying.

It's actually pretty disappointing coming from you.

I don't think you, or even Mili, is a racist. (I'm quite certain that you are not; Mili, well, ...)

Racism isn't the charge I'd levy against a white person who misrepresents the use of "nigga" by some in the black community; it's lack of awareness of what many other ethnic groups have historically done to co-opt terms once used by others to deprecate. And also, to some extent, it's a desire to act as social arbiter. Which is pretty much a human predilection, when you get right down to it.

The new thing that I'm pissed off at is the lack of understanding about what I'm saying. I don't know if you're in that boat or not...but I'll use your post to reply anyways.

1. Harrison said a word that I believe falls somewhere on the scale between "dude" and "jerk".....so, completely harmless.
2. OH10 takes offense to when white people use a COMPLETELY DIFFERENT WORD which I believe tips the scales as to how much malice and hatred you can cram into one word.
3. I question why OH10 only takes offense to when white people use the second word, with all the intentions and hatred that comes with it. If a person of any color skin or backround uses that word (not the word Harrison used), everybody should be equally offended.

It should be the intent of the word, not the color of the skin of the person using it....right?

Well, of course the real amusing part of all this is... what we're discussing is merely a PC nazi re-run of Victorian morality. And of course really the issue isn't at all what is offensive, but who is offended. And that's the assbackwards part of calling the n-word racist if a racist says it. Without the cell phone video... the SAE incident is a tree falling in the forest with no one there. (Presuming everyone on the bus - or whatever it was- was going along, and I presume they weren't, but there's a difference, one that's VERY clear in this thread between mortified over behavior and being genuinely offended by it... mostly here we have a lot of mortified.)

So, in the end of the day, its all about who gets to be the thought police. Whether is actually racist or merely impolite, we don't get to take Mr Harrison's birthday away.

I'm not seeing the analogy there at all. Who's going around calling themselves or anyone else a "redskin"? The only place I ever see "red"-anything in reference to Native Americans is on old lodges and union shops in the run-down parts of towns.

In fact, I'm not seeing any of these analogies with other derogatories about other "races", and most of the attempts to make them are really reaching. It's called the N-word for a reason.

"Hunkie" used to be a term of abuse used by WASPs about Slavic immigrants. Now many of us jokingly use the term to describe ourselves.

"Yid" used to be a term of abuse used by WASPs about Jews. Now some Jews jokingly refer to themselves as Yids.

I've similarly heard many Italian-Americans refer to themselves as "wops" or "dagoes," both of which originated as terms of abuse. I've even heard a few Asians describe themselves as "slant-eyes," again humorously.

Why are black folks not permitted to co-opt for themselves the word "nigga" to use innocuously, if they so please? Based on those other examples, isn't that a decision that should be left solely up to black folks? And what right does any white person have to get on the soapbox about black folks doing something that countless other ethnic groups have been allowed to do?

To quote one of our more enlightened minds, "because slavery".

Nothing about American black-white relations allows for that word to be used "innocuously" by anybody.

So white people not only enslaved black people, white people have the right to dictate the words and terminology of black people's subsequent narrative about it.

Seems pretty presumptuous to me.

I think that dictation went the other way--coming from the most presumptuous of our society's moral arbiters--and from there it's just a matter of being consistent.

But seriously, I'm still laughing about that "innocuous" comment... so funny... I can't breathe.

I call bullshit. I've been in the Pacific for 36 of the last 40 years, including the last 29, and I've never heard a single Asian refer to his/herself as a "slant-eye". Never. Nor have I ever heard a single Italian-Americans refer to his/herself as a "wap" or "dago"...ever.
