Harrison remark, Intentional?

IF Kaminsky had said it, it would be impossible to see how the comment wasn't directed at Harrison's race. Under these circumstances, people are just mad that Harrison said something he shouldn't have said. No one honestly (or reasonably) believes he was disparing Kaminsky because he was white. Therein lies the difference, whether you want to recognize it or not.
If Harrison had said it towards Hayes, would it have been racist? What if booker said it to Hayes? People can make all sorts of assumptions which come down to their personal experiences and viewpoints on the word .

The word is used to denigrate. It has an odd spinoff usage as "dude" but that was hardly an endearing comment. At best it was probably "bitch" . It was in some vague middle ground that adds to the absurdity of ever using the n word in any fashion other than its original intent. The word should never be used but at least a racist person is saying something comprehensible (wicked and deplorable but you can identify the meaning of his word)

Huh? How do you equate the stupidity of what he said with that?

Because he's a Kentucky basketball player using street slang to describe someone who just kicked their ass? And until shown otherwise, I assume most everyone is semi-literate, even non-athletes, until they prove otherwise.

How do you not equate stupidity with what he said?

How about this? the word is vile and vindictative and we as a society cannot afford a double standard in such a reviled word. the Blacks cannot keep blaming other races when they use it and still say it's ok for them to use. Harrison should come out publicly and say he was wrong and avow that no one should use that word or any derivation of it. The use of twitter in this instant is not enough and is incorrect.

Here's a quick breakdown for all of the people who are outraged today by the lack of outrage, which is outrageous considering all the outrage I'm seeing from outraged white people:

1. Harrison said an idiotic thing about a specific person, not an entire race. And the use of the term wasn't directed at Kaminsky because of his race.

why do you think the term was not directed at kaminsky because of race? while i suspect you are correct and it wasn't. I do find it interesting that you seem to be of the opinion that race couldn't possibly be involved. also, do you feel the word is less offensive when directed at an individual and not based on race?

2. People trying to compare this to the Oklahoma SAE thing are the same people who thought the SAE Oklahoma thing was blown out of proportion, which I find incredibly comical. White kids sing about the n-word, lynching, and how they'll never accept a black guy into their cool little group; and one black kid says the n-word about a white guy and, all of a sudden, THEY'RE THE SAME!

I completely agree that the Oklahoma level of stupid is considerably worse. I do not believe there is much, if any, comparison between the two situations. I don't believe there is any defense for the Oklahoma situation. but I do find it interesting that there "might" be the possibility that the Oklahoma situation could serve as a defense for Harrison in some way.

3. There's a reason why we don't get as upset about black people using the n-word as we do about white people. It's a good reason. It's not a closely-guarded secret. Anybody want to know what it is?

Ok, I'll spoil the suspense. You see, historically, white people would call black people the n-word to make them feel inferior. Sometimes (See SAE) they still do. So white people don't get to use the word. Black people shouldn't use it either because we need to put all that behind us, but it is decidedly NOT THE SAME FUCKING THING.

interesting... ok, so white people don't get to use the word. im 100% fine with that. I have never used the word to describe another person. primarily because i know the definition and can't think of a single human being in the history of mankind that could be described by said word.

so who in your opinion can justify using it? I assume black people. but is there anyone else?

understand im not attacking you in anyway, this is something i have been curious about for some time. see, my family came to this country in 1938. to my knowledge no one in my family has ever owned a slave of any type, black or otherwise. so it is highly unlikely that anyone in my family had anything to do with slavery in this country. neither the advent and exploitation or the sacrifices in blood to secure freedom. so is it my skin tone that makes me different? is it because the people who exploited slavery in this country were largely of European decent which happens to be the same general area mine is originally from?

I know ive gone off topic here, ive just always been genuinely curious about this. as an "outsider" looking in to a degree... every time slavery seems to come up it always seems to boil down to white people being evil because they owned slaves. it never seems to come up that white people died to help secure an end to slavery. like I said, im just genuinely curious as I don't feel I have much, if any, real attachment to slavery in this country good or bad.

Holy smokes! Here's a blast from the past!

I can't understand why a black guy would call anyone a "nigga"...
The whole point was an attempt to remove the connotations of racism from the word; to make it just another word (if used by a black person).

I don't like the word at all, but so what? I also don't like the word "sewage," useful and sometimes necessary as the word is. I don't rant and rave when I hear people use it.

I continue to be bemused by why white folks are offended by blacks' use of the word. Is the problem that you want to be able to use it yourself? What exactly pisses you off so much when black folks use the word? It's baffling.

Well... in my view whites, but only secodarily, should be offended by it... and black folks even more... especially when used within that community. It doesn't remove the connotation when used by a black person. And if you're going to go around referring to your acquaintences that way, don't be surprised when they act in a way that lives up to the standard matching the way they're treated.

I don't go around calling my wife and daughter bitches, whores, stupid or worthless, and its not just a matter of being polite.

There's just no way to possibly think this without a preconceived notion of it....and there's no possible way to prove it. It's as dumb as when people say "why is there a black history month and not a white history month?"

And no one just gets to use the word. Plenty of people in the black community are critical of using the word. The fact that the blowback for black people who use the word pales in comparison to the blowback for white people who use the word isn't some 'double standard' or injustice. It's a recognition that, while it may be wrong for all, it is absolutely worse for a white person to say it in a derogatory fashion.
Watch me take away a word from this post and have it mean the same thing.
