Unless the Cincy Enquirer was wrong, of all those present, he was primarily responsible for constructing and detonating the pipebombs. As for the other 19 year old, it's my understanding that he's been arrested and indicted on felony charges. Good!
"Kids do stupid stuff..."
Again, this was not a kid, and it was something far beyond "stupid stuff." "Stupid stuff" over Winter break is getting drunk and making a fool of yourself trying to get laid with an old girlfriend. "Stupid stuff" is not exploding pipebombs in the presence of minors. That's called "felony child endangerment." He was a legal adult and someone who wanted, in a couple of years, to become a naval officer. This wasn't some juvenile mistake. It was the profoundly unsound, immature and criminal judgment of somebody who should have known better.
Quite frankly, if this adult had been affiliated with my alma mater, I would feel the same way. Far from trying to stick up for him or minimize what he did or attempt to use the ROTC affiliation to wrap him in the flag and negate any criticism, I would be disgusted and embarrassed at such a dangerous, dysfunctional loser's association with my alma mater.
Thank him for taking his sorry ass out of the gene pool and give him a Darwin Award.
Again, what they all did was wrong. Also, I could care less about the reputation of my alma mater. Was his intent to hurt people around him? No. Was he a menace to society? I suppose in your rationale, he was. Intent does not prove innocence, but it I hardly think it's irrelevant. Either way, my point remains that joking about a fatal accident should be off-limits. I guess that's difficult to see from your seat of righteousness.
