I don't want to be "that guy"....but I actually thought he underperformed in comparison to his talent on the field.

Our defenses were unbelievably vanilla, in that we were man press damn near every play, and relied heavily on front 4. There was little to no creativity and it hurt us....a lot.

Just mixing in a bit of zone, creative blitzes, etc. would of done wonders in a few scenarios. I get the "we can line up and beat you, doing what we do best".....but not getting creative at all was a disservice to our defense IMO.

Not sure how many recruits he helped secure with his extensive background, but I think we will be fine on that front. I'm actually a bit excited for new blood.

I think it's a poor hire for Tennessee. His reputation took a huge hit after his stint in Tampa....I know NFL world is different than college, but agents hate him, and he earned a reputation as a really paranoid guy. I'm surprised Tennessee would go this route rather than a few other young up and coming guys. Like a previous poster, I thought Greg would land at a lower prestige school in a Power 5 conference. But maybe that's where we're at with the Vols...

I don't think that anyone thought Schiano would stay more than two years when he was hired.

Alabama has gone through 5 Offensive Coordinators in Saban's tenure. Applewhite (1), McElwain (4), Nussmeier (2), Kiffin (3) and now Daboll/Locksley.

Assuming that Schiano actually is gone, I'll leave it to the elitist prick mods to decide whether it's time to start a 2018 tOSU defense thread or a separate thread to discuss potential DC successors. I worry about a Warinner 2.0 issue if they promote Johnson or Sir Hypeness, and am hoping that Bill Davis finds somewhere else to coach, so who should tOSU go after for DC?

I would rather hire another DC, than promoting within. I like where Coombs and Johnson are at currently, and it appears as though they are content as well. Not sure of the defensive names out there, but would like to see someone new brought in. Perhaps someone who specializes in improving LBs and refining secondary play. The defensive line is pretty polished, just need to improve the interior. I would say they are addressing that in a big way in the 2018 recruiting class.

Well now that Sumlin is fired we could get ex LSU guru. Not sure he's done really well at A&M though

I disagree. Greg Schiano has proven to be a very capable and competent FBS/division 1A HC. It did take him 5 years, but turning Rutgers into a winner was quite an accomplishment. OK, he "bombed" in the NFL; but so did Saban. He would be a great hire for Tennessee.

"A winner" is a vague term. After the 11-2 season they fell to a 8-4/9-3 team. Technically a winner but meh. He had a 16-19 record in conference from 2007-2011. And that was the Big East. Not a powerhouse in the least.

When has Alabama ever been noted for their offense or their OCs? As I’m sure you picked up on, I was referring to Kirby.

Same for VT and Foster, and Clemson and Venables.

And while few expected Schiano to stay more than 2 years, it doesn’t make it any less annoying to have to go through this whole song and dance yet again - especially with Urbans hit and miss track record.

8-4/9-3 seasons at Rutgers during that stretch was a MASSIVE achievement. They were absolutely terrible. Damn near Kansas terrible.
