Greg Schiano (HC Rutgers Scarlet Knights)

Well said red guard.

Schiano has achieved a great deal as a coach. Not only as a DC but his work at Rutgers is the stuff of legends. He also has been a HC at the highest level (NFL).

I posit he would be a valuable sounding board for Day.

He also is a great recruiter with strong ties to NJ and FL.

I'm trying to figure out what excites people about Grinch.
Recruiting? On field results?
I think the jury is still out on Grinch because we still dont know if he had a hand in the defensive calls, and hes still being judged on White seeing the field so late in the season(though it was mainly due to White not being ready). I think the Grinch optimism is based on another young coach being on staff and can infuse some energy into his side of the ball, and also optimism based off of what he was able to do at Wash St with their attacking defense.

Well there was the whole thing about Urban Meyer and Nick Saban both wanting him to come be their DC.

He doesn't have a long enough track record for any of us to be able to point to anything specific but those two guys know what they know about young coaches and I will defer to their judgement.

I think the Schiano and Grinch situation is a case of having 1st world problems.

What do we know of Grinch as a recruiter.
He didn't appear to do much in year 1 at OSU.

Does he have any regional ties in high-end talent pools in the NE or SE?

Has he any experience competing v tier 1 schools for prospects.

This isn't to say he isn't capable.

My concern is we have had a significant talent drain in terms of recruiting on the defense side of the ball the past 2-3 years (Luke, Coombs, possibly Schiano).

Day has offensive recruiting on lock down.
We will need to fill the defensive side of the staff with strong recruiters.

My understanding is that Grinch runs the same defense as Narduzzi/Ash, which is the primary appeal in my opinion.

FootballScoop says Oklahoma is zeroing in on Alex Grinch as their guy at DC. Interesting, considering Schiano’s comments yesterday. Could Day be replacing both DCs or will Grinch rebuff Riley and gain sole control of the defense?

There is some weird optimism out of OU that even if Grinch is made full time DC OU thinks they can pull him despite him being an Ohio boy and with an Ohio wife. I'm not sure if that is delusion or there is something to it.

That seems about as “he gone” as it gets, no?

And if people want to freak out about (lack of) future recruits maybe look to the overall instability right now, as opposed to blaming individual coaches.

Once this gets settled in a week or 2, the rest will fall into place and it’ll be fine.

I read it as 'i want to be a HC again but not sure that opportunity comes knocking' ... which we've known would be status quo since the day he was hired.

Been reading that a lot of people (not so much on this board) want Schiano gone.

Schiano is one of maybe 3 guys that Bill Belichick (the undisputed GOAT) consults regularly. Losing him would be losing an elite coach, no matter how anyone spins it.

Wanting Schiano gone for the terrible D last year reminds me of people wanting Fickell gone, for the terrible D in the Fickell/Withers years. Yes, the D sucked last year. But Schiano has a strong and highly proven track record. The rest of the defensive coaching staff? Not so much, outside of LJ.

I think Schiano has room to improve his defensive philosophy at Ohio State and tailor it to the players at hand better, going forward. However, I would much much rather jettison the guys with no track record or with a straight-up awful track record (*cough* Bill Davis *cough*) first.

I dont doubt his abilities as a coach... problem is, he'll always have 1 foot out the door. Seems more like 1.5 since Tenn fell through...
Not sure why people bringing up Freeman constantly, when ImO Grinch was brought here to be the DC in waiting. Why bring in a young up and coming coach, just to ditch him for another one? We brag that Bama was after Grinch, but then want to toss him aside for an alum? Not sure why so much love for Freeman but not so much for Grinch.

And to bring it back to Schiano, wouldn’t be surprised at either outcome tbh, though I’d like him gone and let Grinch implement his own scheme and infuse this staff with youth and hunger a la what Hartline is doing with Zone 6

Let's assume Schiano finds his job, and Grinch finds success here with silver bullets.
Is he satisfied being a great DC? Some guys are... but most of the brilliant young coaches Meyer attracts have that ambition... chose Meyer specifically because of his success grooming coordinators into head coaches.

It's not far out to think we could be in the market for a DC 3 years from now.

I rather worry about that 3 years from now with a possible NC and 3 more B1G titles

Day said he wanted to run a simple defensive scheme, so that the players could not think and play fast. I am not sure that describes Schiano's defense. IIRC, earlier this year I read something that Schiano has the Mike and Sam LB's learn both positions so the defense doesn't have to flip based on which hash the ball is on. It always made me wonder if the problems with the LB's were a function of too much thinking.

As for the LB's, I doubt if that's their issue. Generally you would know what the player next to you has as far as responsibilities.
