Starting Monday, Offseason Program Provides Opportunity To Improve
by Mike Spofford, Packers.com
posted 03/13/2008

When the Green Bay Packers' 2007 season is recorded in the history books, it will be duly noted that the four-game winning streak to conclude 2006 was the springboard to the four-game winning streak that began a memorable 2007.
What won't be so duly noted, but was just as (if not more) valuable, was all the work put in between those winning streaks, work that begins once again Monday with the offseason program.
First- and second-year players begin their offseason workouts on Monday, followed by veteran players two weeks later, on March 31......

A Fresh Look At The '08 Opponents
by Mike Spofford, Packers.com

Now that it's official Aaron Rodgers will be taking over for Brett Favre as the Packers' starting quarterback, it's worth taking a quick look at the upcoming 2008 opponents within that context.
Ranked in order of the most intriguing matchups, here's a glance at next season's foes. (Note: The actual game schedule is expected to be released early next month.)

1. Dallas - As if Rodgers hasn't heard enough already about his solid performance in relief of Favre during the NFC's biggest regular-season game in 2007, it will all be rehashed heading into this one. Rodgers rallied the Packers from a 17-point deficit to within three points early in the fourth quarter before Dallas eventually put the game way......

There are some so-called experts out there who feel the Green Bay Packers will not win the NFC North Division, and possibly not even earn a playoff berth. Packer Report's Todd Korth says that's nothing but a bunch of hooey, and explains why......

Green Bay Packers Strategy and Personnel

Other than the well-chronicled retirement by quarterback Brett Favre, the purported retirement by long snapper Rob Davis and the trade of defensive tackle Corey Williams to Cleveland for a second-round draft pick this year, the Packers have been quiet in the offseason thus far.

They're well-armed with salary-cap room of about $30 million, thanks in big part to Favre's walking away from a $12 million salary this year, but GM Ted Thompson isn't in a rush to make any acquisitions from the available pool of free agents. The only activity that could happen between now and the draft in late April is landing a quarterback to back up new starter Aaron Rodgers.......

Daniel Muir? Noah Herron? Tony Palmer? These players barely played for the Green Bay Packers in 2007, or not at all, but may have bigger roles this season, along with a few other players who have been patiently rehabbing from an injury, or trying to make the climb from the bottom of the depth chart into the regular rotation. PackerReport.com?s Todd Korth explains why.....

Chillar fills a pressing need; Favre ceremony; Rodgers goes mushing; McCarthy to get hitched

The Packers addressed perhaps their most pressing of just a few needs when they signed former St. Louis Rams linebacker Brandon Chillar.
Chillar, a four-year veteran, sided Green Bay's offer of two years and $5.4 million after he also was hotly pursued by Arizona. Chillar also stands to gain an additional $1 million in playing incentives.......

Training camp holdout a possibility for starting running back

Rare is the NFL player with only one year of playing experience who has some leverage in how much he is compensated. Packers halfback Ryan Grant is one of those unusual cases.
Having emerged the second half of last season as a prolific godsend for Green Bay's once-porous running attack, Grant apparently isn't willing to wait his turn in the pecking order of tenured privileges.
The Green Bay Press-Gazette reported March 18 that Grant reported for the start of the team's offseason workout program a day earlier, but will work out with his teammates on and off the field in the coming months without a contract.

Chillar gets two-year deal, will compete with Poppinga for starting job

Linebacker Brandon Chillar signed a two-year contract with the Green Bay Packers today, according to reports. Chillar, the team's first veteran free agent signing this offseason, is expected to compete with Brady Poppinga for the starting position at strong-side linebacker.
Chillar will receive more than $3 million in the first year of the two-year deal, according to the Green Bay Press-Gazette. The contract is worth $5.4 million, and Chillar can make another $1 million in incentives, his agents told the Press-Gazette....

The 39-year-old is taking a job in the Packers' front office as director of player development, a role he delved into last season.

Longtime Packers long snapper Rob Davis has announced his retirement and is focusing full-time on his job in the front office, the team announced on Wednesday.
Davis, 39, was Green Bay?s long snapper for 11 seasons. His 167 consecutive games ranks third in team history behind Brett Favre?s 255 and Forrest Gregg?s 187.
Davis will serve as the Packers? director of player development, general manager Ted Thompson said. It?s not an unfamiliar job, since he assisted Tim Terry in that role while playing last season. In that capacity, Davis will be active in the locker room and will assist players to life on and off the field in Green Bay......
