Greatest Actor of our generation?

Folanator

Brawndo's got electrolytes...
Who is the greatist actor of our generation?

IMO it is Jonny Depp. His range from Gilbert Grape, to Jack Sparrow, to Sweeny Todd, to Edward Sissorhands to Ed Wood is unmatched.

Yes, he is a little quirky, but he is the greatist talent of the current generation of actors.

PS he is supposed to be in Sin City 3 next year.

Depp is a good actor and I think he would be great in the Sin City series. I'd like to see more of his work outside of the quirky/dark genres.

My three favorites are Edward Norton, Phillip Seymour Hoffman and Kevin Spacey.

Depends on how you define "our generation". I was barely alive when The Godfather I and II were released, and I would consider Pacino's performance in the first two to be the greatest acting on film, but that could be considered the previous generation. As far as actors who are within 10 or so years of my age, I would agree with Daniel Day-Lewis. There Will Be Blood put it over the top for me, an amazing performance. Plus, My Left Foot, his first role, was unbelievable. Depp is also a good choice. Fear and Loathing was a great role. Leonardo DiCaprio deserves consideration. I used to hate him, but his work in The Aviator, Catch Me If You Can, and The Departed were all very good. I would also give a nod to Brad Pitt for Seven, Fight Club, Snatch, and Babel. Denzel Washington is also up there. I haven't liked his recent movies, but his role in Glory was superb. Some lesser known actors: Mark Wahlberg in Boogie Nights, Philip Seymour Hoffman in several movies, and Heath Ledger in The Dark Knight. In the end, I give it to Day-Lewis.

EDIT: I just saw Ed Norton mentioned good choice. Also Christian Bale in American Psycho, The Machinist, and that Viet Nam movie (not the Batman movies). Ryan Gosling was very, very good in The Believer and Half Nelson. Spacey is excellent, but I don't know if he falls in "our generation".

And when will the 2nd installment be coming out?
I loved #1.

2 will be out at the end of '09 I think. 3 is a year later. No Mickey Rorke in 2, major dissapointment.

I did not want to throw a whole bunch of names to start the thread. But the list is a good one. There is some serious talent currently.
Hanks
Dicaprio
Norton Jr
Pitt

There was a time when Robert Downey was going to be the chosen one. Less than Zero, Chaplin. He has made a nice come back, but still is not on the list IMO.
