The Georgia Bulldogs will continue their quest for an undefeated regular season this weekend when they host the Tennessee Volunteers. Despite starting the year with J.T. Daniels under center, the Bulldogs turned to Stetson Bennett when Daniels went down with an injury. Now, Georgia appears to be moving forward with Bennett even though Daniels is healthy.
During a recent appearance on SiriusXM SEC Radio, college football analyst and former Bulldogs quarterback Aaron Murray said that Bennett will go down as the greatest quarterback in Georgia football history when they win the national championship two months from now. Georgia is coming off a big win over Missouri in Week 10.
“The QB1 for Georgia, not QB2, not QB1 just for a little bit until J.T. (Daniels) is healthy because J.T. was healthy, and J.T. was the backup. QB1 Stetson Bennett, 13 of 19, 255 (yards) two touchdowns and the quarterback in the SEC with the most touchdowns over 35 yards. Who said this kid couldn’t throw the ball over 35 yards? You don’t watch football. He has been tremendous letting it rip, Missouri did everything they could to stop the run. I mean Georgia, 168 yards, which is pretty darn good honestly, but still, they load the box, man-to-man coverage, they said, ‘We dare you to throw the ball down the field Georgia.’ Well, Stetson Bennett did and he did a damn good job of doing it. Good to see some of his receivers get healthy, Jermaine Byrd making an appearance, AD Mitchell, I think he’s a young receiver who’s going to continue to get better and better, and obviously we know Brock Bowers is a stud. But Stetson Bennett, in about two months, is going to be the greatest quarterback in Georgia history.”
Daniels was a former five-star recruit that began his career at USC. But he transferred to Georgia after the 2019 season and, after recovering from an injury, led the Bulldogs to a victory in the Peach Bowl last season. Daniels then began the year as the starting quarterback but battled a strained lat muscle early on that caused him to miss a Week 2 game. As Daniels recovered, Bennett continued to start in his place and has run with the job.
Bennett has helped the Bulldogs start 9-0, as the team has reached 30 or more points in every game since a 10-3 victory over Clemson in the season opener. Bennett is completing 66.7% of his passes for 14 touchdowns and four interceptions. This past weekend, Bennett had his best weekend in SEC play, throwing for 255 yards and two touchdowns in a 43-6 win over Missouri. Daniels made his return to the field against the Tigers, marking the first game he has played since Sept. 25. But it looks like the Bulldogs will stick with Bennett.
For whichever quarterback finishes the season, Georgia’s schedule is rather favorable. The Bulldogs have just one SEC game left, coming this weekend at Tennessee. After that, Georgia closes out the year with Charleston Southern at home and Georgia Tech on the road.
