Gene Smith (Former AD, ‘10 AD of the Year, '13 NAAC Organizational Leadership Award)

Since his contract runs another four academic years after this current one, any grounds to fire Gene Smith without a buyout?

Even though his job performance is poor, an attorney could argue Ohio State doesn't have grounds and would have to payout.

Probable settlement, because four years remaining is a long contract?

Dec. 20, 2011

The Ohio State University today received the NCAA?s ruling regarding violations involving its football program. Following a 12-month investigation conducted jointly by the NCAA and the University, the NCAA levied sanctions beyond those self-imposed by the university. Among the penalties Ohio State had self-imposed was a loss of five scholarships; the NCAA imposed a nine-scholarship penalty, three during each of the next three years. Additionally, the NCAA has imposed a three-year probation and a post-season ban for the coming year.

?We are surprised and disappointed with the NCAA?s decision,? said Gene Smith, Ohio State?s Athletics Director and Associate Vice President. ?However, we have decided not to appeal the decision because we need to move forward as an institution. We recognize that this is a challenging time in intercollegiate athletics. Institutions of higher education must move to higher ground, and Ohio State embraces its leadership responsibilities and affirms its long-standing commitment to excellence in education and integrity in all it does.

?My primary concern, as always, is for our students, and this decision punishes future students for the actions of others in the past,? said Smith. ?Knowing our student-athletes, however, I have no doubt in their capacity to turn this into something positive ? for themselves and for the institution. I am grateful to our entire Buckeye community for their continued support.?

Smith noted that President E. Gordon Gee and the university?s Board of Trustees are in the process of concluding their examination of compliance at the university as part of a larger effort to develop a comprehensive, state-of-the-art model for the entire institution, including the athletics program. ?All of us at Ohio State are determined to ensure that our compliance programs and protocols are best in class,? said Smith. ?We will assume a leadership role in representing our university and its values.

?It is important to remember that Ohio State has one of the nation?s largest self supporting athletics programs, with students succeeding both in competition and in the classroom,? said Smith. ?We have more than 1,000 students who compete in 36 intercollegiate sports, and the overall grade-point average of our student-athletes is just over 3.0. During the last two years, the University has had more student-athletes named to the Academic All-Big Ten Team than any other school. Further, Ohio State finished second in last year?s Directors? Cup, which recognizes the best athletics programs in the country.?
Now's a helluva time to start, you incompitent boob.

That sucks because he needs to go. Now because of his arrogance, the good juniors who will be seniors next year (Boren, Simon etc..) have to suffer because of these current seniors. These seniors get a bowl game and next years don't. Should've took the bowl ban this year!

I live in Phoenix and am a season ticket holder to ASU baseball -- one of the numerous formerly distinguished programs Smith has managed to run into the ground. This is truly the best possible choice for ASU and the worst possible choice for OSU. Smith has exactly one redeeming characteristic -- he's Black; but after all, if it wasn't for affirmative action, Holbrook would still be teaching second grade in Georgia. Apparently there's only one criterion for selection in Holbrook's book.
Smith has created a huge athletics department deficit here; he is a truly inept fund raiser who is completely unorganized and has no clue to go about anything. The building programs have languished. The baseball, wrestling, and basketball teams have been absolutely destroyed under his tenure and may never recover. In alumni/supporter events he's detached and communes only with a small group of backers who have moved into the department like vultures. They have hacked large numbers of department employees in the past couple of years in an attempt to balance the books, which still hasn't worked. In speaking with him you wonder if he's really as dumb as he comes across, or if it's an act. The athletics department is currently under NCAA investigation for a number of football violations, including the use of autos provided by department employees, academic fraud, and other maladies, and he has no handle on any of these things whatsoever.
I was truly astounded when I read this story. This guy is much worse than Jim Jones. Say good-bye to proud athletic tradition, integrity, and fiscal soundness at OSU if he comes on board for the sake of stoking Holbrook's political correctness agenda.

This post was bumped once before, and I think it needs to be bumped again. The bolded is spot on for what we witnessed this past year, in my IMO.

We still have a proud athletic tradition. Integrity can be regained by clearing house of some of these clowns. I don't even know that it was so much a "lack of integrity" as just growing complacent and lazy. But, yeah, Geno has left quite a legacy for himself...

I will have no problem with Buckeye fans who boo him lustily.

He's clueless if he shows his face on the court tonight. The booing would be very loud, and would simply ruin the honor for Bob Knight.

They need to contact Archie Griffin, Jimmy Jackson, or somebody else to do that introduction tonight.

I should have clarified that was the perception that old Gene brought to the program over the past year.

Yeah, he'll show...he can't help himself, and he has thoroughly convinced himself he has done nothing wrong at all. He's the only one who believes that, and he will act shocked, SHOCKED I tell you, that people are booing him horribly. Hell he'll probably convince himself people were booing Bob Knight instead, that's the kind of clown he is. If he still has a job next year, then my faith in upper management will further deteriorate, which honestly I didn't think was mathematically possible.
