IN the article below is Maurkice Pouncey's denial.

If I were looking at it from the perspective of a lawyer and a Gator fan, I would notice that his statement is not the same thing as saying "I didn't take any money from any agent before the Sugar Bowl", and if I cared about whether or not that win over Cincy gets vacated, I'd hope that the NCAA investigators accepted it without any probing followup questions. :tongue2:

Ex-Gator denies payment

Former Florida Gators standout Maurkice Pouncey denied allegations yesterday that he took money from a representative of a sports agent while he was at the university.

"I did not accept $100,000; it is an absolutely ridiculous claim. I have completely cooperated with the investigation and answered any and all questions put to me," Pouncey said in a statement released through his Gainesville lawyer, M. Stephen Stanfield.

Florida and the NCAA are investigating an allegation that Pouncey was paid $100,000 between the Southeastern Conference title game and the Sugar Bowl last season, ESPN.com reported this week.

The offensive lineman was selected 18th overall by the Pittsburgh Steelers in this year?s NFL draft.

Florida coach Urban Meyer said the Gators support Pouncey.

?If something happened, we should be punished severely,? Meyer said. ?If it didn?t happen, then it?s nonsense. I heard his denial today, and we stand by Maurkice Pouncey.?

The player?s twin brother, Florida offensive lineman Mike Pouncey, said they have cooperated with investigators.

?I talked to my brother, and it?s not true,? Mike Pouncey said. ?He pretty much cleared that up in his statement.?

But his statement ended up with this headline on GoVolsXtra's version of the Orlando Sentinel story of Jeremy Fowler, who had the infamous run-in with Urban a few months ago, so maybe it'll work:

Pouncey denies he took money from agent

It's not Pope Urban's fault. Gator' disguised it as gluten-free communion wafers.

Just don't let Pope Nicholas hear about it, or he'll convene a press conference and call you a bad, bad name.

Didn't you guys see the Sistine Chapel when you were at the Vatican? Urban is higher than the Pope.

I guess I'll give him the doubt because of his history of not having any major problems at Florida, but more so because his first round status gave him access to one of those pre-signing deferred loan thingies that let you borrow money predicated upon future repayment and employability. I understand that they also charge you for a disability policy that covers the bank if you get hurt and do not wind up being drafted/able to repay the loan.

Put another way, if he had access to cash that was legal, then he could help his parents with the money problems arising from his dad's leg being cut off in the train accident - and still not get in trouble for getting it. No reason to take 100K from a runner if he had easy access to it from some other source. But who knows, people do all sorts of stupid things.

As much as I cooled on Meyer since his bolting from both BGSU and Utah after telling his players he would be back, this statement is what I expect a respectable coach to say. You would never hear Saban, DickRod, or Kiffen speak these words in response to these types of accusations. I give kudos when they are due.

You're probably right about that.

Do you know the timing of when those pre-draft loans are available?
Are those policies only available for football players after they have declared for the draft because I thought I read in the basketball forum once that a basketball player could not get a loan based on future earnings. I don't know if that was an NCAA regulation or something that insurance companies do not buy into.

Litl, I do not know, but if his defense is "Instead of that illegal thing, I did a different illegal thing!" then I see a great career opportunity in legal representation of athletes under investigation.

Our annual Friday Night Lights camp produced two commitments, one being Trip Thurman (6-6, 305 lbs, Dover, Delaware). Once he sets foot on Florida soil and gets that extra .2 in speed he will be a great one. Always good to find a smart, big offensive lineman. After a drought over in the LA Panhandle area, the 12th Gators verbal was d-back Loucheiz Purifoy (5-11, 170 lbs, Pine Forest-Pensacola) Good to get one from Tahd/Nole territory finally.

So 12 down, 28 to go :banger:

Urban Meyer will never be as beloved as Steve Spurrier

Sentinel columnist Mike Bianchi wishes Steve Spurrier was still coaching at Florida and not South Carolina.

In advance of Florida- South Carolina, the comparisons are drawn. Every year at this time, before the "new" ballcoach plays the ol' ballcoach, we always try to draw comparisons between the two greatest coaches in University of Florida history. ... Meyer will never, ever be as beloved at UF or in the Southeastern Conference as Spurrier once was. And, contrary to popular perception, this has little to do with Spurrier being a football hero and the first Heisman Trophy winner in UF history. No, this is more about Urban Meyer's relationship with Gator Nation than it is about Steve Spurrier's. More precisely, it's about Urban Meyer having little connection with the fans who root for the Gators, the booster clubs who support the Gators and the media who cover the Gators.

Sources: Gators pursuing Charlie Weis

Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator Charlie Weis is being targeted by the University of Florida Gators to become the offensive coordinator under new coach Will Muschamp, two sources confirmed to ESPN.
Weis is expected to take the job, but no firm agreement is in place.
Muschamp contacted the Chiefs this week for permission to talk to Weis, with the full intention of hiring the Chiefs offensive coordinator and former Notre Dame head coach, sources said. A Florida source said Weis would continue to coach the Chiefs into the AFC playoffs. Another source reiterated that Weis is expected to accept the job.
In his first year on the job, Muschamp has been focused on hiring an NFL offensive coordinator to install a pro-style offense and to assist with attracting pro-style quarterbacks and receivers to the Gators program, sources said.
The Gainesville Sun first reported that Weis was the leading candidate for the Gators' offensive coordinator position.
