Gameplanning against LSU

Ok, Les Miles is probably the most underrated coach in the SEC right now. Everyone assumes he is winning with "superior" talent.

Do you always argue with yourself? D.B. made no such comment.

If anyone doubts his ability to coach, look at the SEC championship game. That is probably one of the best coaching jobs I have seen in a long time.

Beating a 9-4 Tenn team thanks to a pick-6 is an elite coaching job? If you say so. A few months ago SEC fans claimed Tenn was a mediocre, mid-pack SEC team, on the heels of the Cal beatdown. Soon after that, they let UF hang 60 on them.

I think he's a pretty good coach who loves taking unnecessary gambles, and his improbable conversion streak cannot continue forever.

Anyone can have a bad game but his gameplan at Ok State vs OSU in the '04 Alamo Bowl was as much a gift to us as ours was to UF last year.

He had a stud RB(Morency plays for the Pack now iirc) and OL and either led the nation or was at the very top in rushing all season. By the time the smoke cleared the RB had 4 carries iirc or maybe it was 4 carries while it was still a game.

Regardless the decision to do a 180 and try to beat us throwing with a sub par Qb was puzzling for the other OSU fans to say the least.

thats all fine and dandy, but he has made large errors this year, as well as moments of brilliance, I'm pretty sure I said all of that.

Also, the SEC game was against Tennessee, who, last time I check was not very good this year(outside of the record). He wouldn't have looked so brilliant against UGA or UF. This was the same UT that got murdered by a recovering UF, a crappy Alabama, and a letdown of a team named Cal.

Excellent reference. I'm also reminded of the fake FG attempt, seems to be a long-standing affinity of his.

The Woods' family had to be cringing at that gameplan, as their kids took a savage beating all night, sometimes on the same play.

FWIW, I thought that the SEC championship game was a contest between two poorly called game plans. With Fulmer's being slightly more awkward and incorrectly executed. Neither head coach impressed me in that game.

Still, you raised this as the benchmark - so have at it.

Nominate three (if you can find three) moments of offensive play-calling genius for Miles in that game.

No credit given for Defensive plays - those are firmly called by BP.

I think the way he and the OC managed the backup QB and his inexperience was brilliant. Second, the pick 6 was a result of good coaching because Zenon read the play and made a great play. It was a very depleted LSU defense that truly stepped up and made the plays to win the game. It was a very good coaching on both sides of the ball.

I've always seen miles as a riverboat gambler. An arrogant style coach that does things that are more risky than that of many other coaches. That was one reason that I wanted him to come to scUM because if he used that style with the lesser quality of players as a scUM he would continously get blasted by Tressel. The higher caliber of players at LSU has given him more oppurtunity to have success even with his style. Plus Pellini's defense protects him. It will be very interesting to see how Pellini's head is in this game with one foot in and one foot out because coord's that have done that in the past usually get thrashed(Richt with FSU going to UGA, and Mike Stoops OKLA going to ARIZ, which you guys should remember)

Especially when he doesnt need to be... that blind toss by the place holder in the VT game could have easily been picked off given VTs abilities at special teams and LSU was already dominating the game. Its just flash for the sake of flash.

No genius needed this year.

In '05 he made a key adjustment using a previously lightly used OL as a TE and gashed them running for a good solid half with it.

In '04 he came out in the spread and let Troy Smith and the offense start to become what it was.

In '02 he saved two plays for a key drive in the second half that no one had seen all year.

Urban Meyer said it best about JT. Paraphrased he is very conservative when he knows he has the bigger checkers and very aggressive when he knows your checkers are just as big as his.


JT has mountains of big game and NC coaching experience in his career. He spit the bit last year but I'm willing to wager it won't happen again.

So... a timely fake and a good halftime adjustment. Sounds like a typical day at the office for a good coach, but certainly not top-3 ever material.

No one is making outlandish statements about that game. They were outmatched, nothing more was needed.

The first of those - given LSU's tendencies should have been sniffed out by the Vols - I fault them more than praise Miles.
The second was required - else if Ainge does not cough up an interception a TD PAT gives the Vols the win. Call necessity the mother of invention if you will, it wasn't a genius call.
The third showed good adjustment - and it had a huge play in it, the 48-yard reception by LaFell.

I'll give you the third, but the other two, not so much.
