Once again my hat goes off to justin for his play today, and if he comes out and tears it up against michigan I think it'd be STUPID to mess up his rythem by putting in Smith.

GO BUCKS!

I guess it's never too soon to talk about scUM. :wink2:

I just keep thinking of what Spielman and some other "insiders" who saw a lot of practices have said; the offense is noticeably improved when TS is in and he is clearly the #1 QB.

We saw that play out over the course of 2004 and there's no reason to think it isn't still true. I think we just saw that we have a very capable back up QB today.

Either way I trust JT to put in the player who gives us the best chance to win.

Sheesh, this place is worse than Bucknuts in its rapid replies. Fuckers.

Yeah, I'm trashed (12-pack of hefeweizens in four hours) , but I'll try to make a serious post. Justin looked quite good (from what I got to see thanks to the GamePlan geeks). Being one of the big Zwick supporters (not necessarily because I like Zwick, but because I think that many over-crtiticized him last year), it's weird for me to say that I personally will feel more comfortable with Smith in there. Our OL did a good job giving Zwick pass protection today, but I'm not so sure we'll be as effective against Texas' DL. If Zwick has the same time against Texas as he had today, then we'll rip them a new ass. But, I think they will bring more pressure, and I think Troy brings an extra dimension that Texas can't, and won't, account for. Thus, I think Troy may be the better option for us. I just wish I got to see what Boeckman had to offer...

very good comments on the JZ Smith QB dilema. IMO I think that troy has earned the stating slot, but Smith will be rusty.
Llet JZ start the game and Smith relieve. thats not up to me.
I liked TB today he looked sharp and ran the offense well.

cant wait to hear from the texas fans, hopefully tomorrow.

3 missed PAT's?? ouch.
Is Selvin hurt any updates?

I officially rescind any comments I made defending our place kicking. Two blocked PAt's and one missed? Totally embarrassing!!! I haven't checked to see what the status of Selvin Young is yet. Hopefully he'll be a go for next week. The talent disparity in this game was far too wide to determine how we really look. Hopefully we won't schedule many more of these glorified scrimmages in the future. You guys definitely got a better look in your first ball game. More than anything the poor place kicking sticks out from this performance. This does not bode well for next week at all. Hopefully the team gets torn a new one regarding tonight's kicking game!

I had to sit next to two of the most annoying fans today. One of them exclaimed "Fuck you, Zwick!" on the very first play. Then he repeated his exclamation after every incompletion (which wasn't very many). The other one was one of them know-it-all fans who likes to bark out what play he thinks *should* be called as the team breaks huddle, and yells out the opposing teams blitzes and yells for the QB to "hit the hot receiver!" :roll2: This fan proclaimed that the pick would be JZ's last action of the year. Then after the next series, he proclaimed that JZ was only allowed back in to "fool" him into thinking that Tressel still had confidence in him and wasn't pulling him because of the pick. By the time Boeckman actually came in, he was saying that Zwick "looked pretty damn good" and had "picked them apart."

My question is... Since when did we become Smith fans, Zwick fans, and Boeckman fans? My hat and my shirt say "Buckeyes" - that's who I root for - and I root for ALL OF THEM.

Not that your neighbor wasn't the sort of ignorant butthead who makes me want to stay home and watch games on TV, but it turns out he was dead on with this one. JT had planned to bring Boeckman in n the nest series, but didn't want to send the message he was being pulled because of the pick.

But to suggest JT had anything less than full confidence in Justin is ludicrous.

After watching some of the UT game, I have to admit that I would be really disappointed if I didn't see a Troy/Vince matchup. It's almost as if it's supposed to happen. They even wear the same number. :)

And yes, Zwick played a great game today. I'm not denying that at all.

Todd Boeckman

I liked JZ, but I also liked Todd Boeckman. I think he shouldn't go against Justin even though I'm a big Troy Smith fan. I would like Justin to start against Texas and if he chokes in the first couple series then bring in Troy. The first team Defense did a hell of job today. Donte Whiter played a great game with the pick six, making up for the roughing the punter. Also had the pair of sacks. Linebacking core played very well and also Ashton Youbody filled in well for Dustin Fox. I wanted to see a little of Erik Haw though.

Of the PAT problem, the first was a miss pure and simple, although I'm not sure if it was the holder or kicker. The other two were blocks, and they were more a problem with the blocking scheme. It was something I noticed during the early practices, and hoped they would fix it. The tackles on the outside were being asked to move up to the line of scrimmage too much after the snap allowing a fast outside rusher a path to the ball. They did make the adjustment and the last few PATs were fine. I really don't expect that this will be a problem next week.

It is so difficult to evaluate how we will do next week based on this game. We were using about half second stringers in the second quarter, all second and third stringers at the 9 minute to go mark of the third and walkons the last 5 minutes.

I was happy to see Vince throw with a 200+ QB rating, and the 400 yards rushing at over 8 per attempt was nice. On special teams our starting Kickoff guy put all six of his kicks in the end zone (2 against a 20mph wind) and we only gave up 18 per kick return and had no punts returned. On the other side Aaron Ross average 20 yards a punt return and our only KO return was for 34 yards.

One freshman RB Jamaal Charles set a new Freshman debut rushing record for Texas 14-135-1, while Melton looks virtually unstoppable 6-65-2 with a 35 yard TD called back (about 20 broken tackles on those 7 runs). Selvin also looked good prior to going out, but frankly I think Charles will be our TB for the season anyway. Taylor had 7 touches for 88 yards a TD, and our TE Thomas had a couple TDs. Vince obviously held back running the ball to give the other guys the work.

Overall I was very happy, with what can only be considered a scrimmage. We could have scored 100.

Melton looked unstoppable tonight. His nickname should be "Mongo." That is really what he looked like. He ran into the pile, shoved 3-4 guys off, and then showed moves and speed to break into the open field and score. He did this twice and scored another time that was called back because of a unnecessary holding penalty.

I haven't seen a freshman debut like that since VY came into the 4th quarter of the 2003 opener as a freshman. But if you remember, VY did not take a single snap in the next game, a loss to Arkansas. Mack has been criticized for holding freshmen out of big early games, notibly Benson vs. OU in 2001 and VY against Arkansas. He MUST put Melton in the game early this coming week....but will he?
