i believe that they have a stud defensive tackle back from injury, it might be rodrique wright? their d-line really scares me they have a ton of solid performers and great depth, the tackles are great, but i think the ends are unproven but have great potential.

like i already said im sure texas fans know more on this subject than i do

My question is why so much hype on there d-line?
The Peterson performance was anomoly compared to the rest of the season. As for Morency check his stats in the second half. Most of his yards came on one 80 yard jaunt that came early in that malaise that Horns displayed in the 1st half of that game.

Most of the hype has to do with our defensive tackles Wright, Dibbles, Okam, and the injured Lokey. They're big, quick, agile and hard to defend. However our ends didnt really make their presence felt until the end of the year. As for the Rose Bowl performance those guys had several key stops that allowed us to get back in the game. Our special teams is the main reason the Rose Bowl came down to a field goal stayed in the game. They're average starting field position was 40+ (not sure on the exact yardage but I do know it was past their 40, I'm sure someone will look it up).

they are NOT recruiting numbers. they are times recorded by NFL scouts during Pro Day from this past April... the scouts initially were highly interested in Hawk, but after they recorded Carpenter's 4.53, they started going gaga, and saying that he would have been a first rounder in the '05 draft...
They were recorded at camp before their freshman year as a recruit, committed or not.

"if we can run the ball at 5-6 yards a clip consistently, then we'll run the majority of the time...but, I don't see that happening against their DL"

I keep reading everywhere how good Texas's D-Line and O-Line is. Im slightly suspect about there D-Line when for the most part in the Rose Bowl they didnt pass-rush like crazy on scUM. The game against Oklahoma State Morency ran all over them. Against Oklahoma Adrian Peterson ran all over them too. I know hes real real good but still, does that deserve all the hype?

I know there O-Line is good because they were pretty productive run team with Benson and Young. They got like 2 studs that'll be playing on sundays next year.

My question is why so much hype on there d-line?
Actually, AP didn't run all over our defensive line. He DID NOT run through the line. He ran AROUND it. Our DE's didn't contain. We didn't practice it, we didn't expect it, and he beat us around the end. I remember seeing it live and having to pour more whiskey out of my flask b/c I was so pissed. It won't happen again.

Also, new DC has different schemes and plans to use blitz more. So what you think you saw last year doesn't matter.

Why stop there? Let's bring back Phil Dawson!!! But sadly I can't remember a single punter that I'd be happy to bring back.
Screw you! You can't have him back. We're keeping him right here in Ohio! Hell, picking him up is the only thing the Clowns have done RIGHT in the last 5+ years.

Are you talking about the guys on YOUR team's 40 yard dash times? Because the way I read that hook'em it sounds like you completely disregarded lv's post. Ours are NOT recruiting numbers but numbers from last seasons tOSU pro day for the NFL scouts..

I wasn't sure anyone was going to pick up on the fact that your beloved Browns kicker was from UT. I applaud you. I haven't followed him too much as a pro but from the ferver of your response you know how good of a kicker he is. Just mention his 50+ yarder into the wind versus Virginia for UT's 700th win and you'll get some tearful responses from UT fans.

So our OkState game, your OkState game, your OU game, and probably any other game that doesn't support your theory are anomalies. We have a reason to think that our early loses were different, considering there were like 8-10 starers that were replaced (including some slackers like Ginn, Gonzalez, and Smith)... the argument abaout OkState is like us saying Ramonce's stats are irrelevant b/c he ripped off one big run during one game. please.

In the RB, your team gave up that field position (and I am not cinvinced it won't do so again). but beyond that, why is it so impossible to keep them from scoring TDs every time?

Let's look at the OkState game, a very average passer completed just 12 passes and threw for 224 yards. Despite turning it around after a 35 pont blowout in the first half (that sounds like an unbeatable defense that won't have DJ anymore)... you only had one sack all game.

I think much of your overconfidence comes from beating up on big12 teams that are not very good. OU looked awful good the last two years and then got dismantled late in teh seasons.

You tried to shut down OU's passing attack, and Peterson went nuts on you (240 yds). You didn't get a single sack in that game. You didn't adjust at halftime to his running, which sounds more like you couldn't than you wouldn't.

So OSU went nuts on you. OU couldn't be stopped. Brown kept kicking to Breaston, and rarely kept them out of the endzone. Heck, even TxTech, who clearly could not matchup well talentwise/physically (and therefore you had your way with them offensively)... racked up 400 yds of passing yards (they didn't pretend to have a running game).

At some point your defensive struggles against good teams have to say something. They can't all be anomalies.

Ok so here is my take on the DL, the ou game, and the first half of the osu game.

It is hyped because there are two potential 1st rounders on it, Rod Wright (sr.) Frank Okam(so), and we are returning all of them. Towards the end of the year our ends learned how to rush the passer(ask reggie) and that was in a read and react type defense, we now run an attacking defense.

Adrian Peterson was an unknown commodity before last years RRS. We all knew of his exploits as a prep star but he had done nothing in the college ranks. On the other hand Jason White was the returning Heisman Winning QB with a bevy of recievers to throw to. Mark Clayton was a 1st round pick as I recall. The thought was, dont let white beat you. Adrian Peterson went on to have a break out game and a heisman campaign. No anomoly, just a flat out bad gameplan. On that note, if I hear us say that we are going into the RRR game this year, " Trying to keep it close till the 4th" I am going to write mack an essay on why that is a bad idea...I FUCKING HATE COACHING NOT TO LOSE!!

I don't know why we had our heads up our asses in the first half of the osu game but we did. This game was the only true anomoly. We were not half as bad as we looked in the first half and probably not as good as we looked in the second.

Hoped that helped, obviously none of it is gospel and it is all off the top of my head, so years yards and other stats could be slightly off, most should be right though.

that makes more success, I still like our chances if due only to special teams. Man we really need some fooball. I don't think anyone will be surprised by a good passing attack from OSU, but I'm eager to see our rushing attack (especially the most unknown quantity, Maurice Wells).

With Coop it ended up more like Chaos Theory

As for 40 times -- most 40 times are pure BS.

The above is a very entertaining read that contrasts the 40 times claimed in recruiting and booster articles with actual 40, 50 and 60 yard dash times extracted from frame by frame analysis of Ben Jonhson running for his World Record in the 100 Meters -- on a pro-style tartan track, in spikes, from starting blocks.
Ben's 40 time -- 4.38.
Either we have a slew of unheralded World Record pace spinters, or those numbers ain't real.
Sum and substance, those 40 times should be taken with a pinch (and a pretty big one) of salt.
While I agree with your last comment, the Ben Johnson comparison is crap. I've seen this comparison before and it just doesn't translate to the 40.

This has been discussed at length in other threads, but a football 40-yard dash and a track 40-yard dash are started in fundamentally different ways. Because of this, the two can't be directly compared, but this doesn't mean that the football 40 is necessarily inaccurate. It just measures something slightly different.<!-- / message -->
Not only are they started differently, but Ben Johnson wasn't running the 40 yard dash, he was running the 100 meter dash. The first 40 yards he was smoothly accelerating so that at 60 he was running as fast as possible, harldy the recipe used in the football 40. If the Olympics had a 40 yard dash, the world record would be a lot faster than 4.38
All that being said, 40 times should be used only to compare players who run during the same workout, there are far too many variables to compare tOSU's pro day to any other university.

you didn't practice or expect OU to run the ball to the outside? how dumb is your coach?
Our DE coach last year had never been a DE coach and did not do a good job at it. He is gone now.

OU mostly ran to one side where we had our two weak links on defense (at that time) Robison and Hall. Robison was a newly converted LB and Hall we have discussed a few pages back. They both had a terrible game and could not contain off tackle runs. Robison improved, finishing the year with 14 TFLs, and with the addition of a real DE coach this year is solid at that spot. We are going to replace Hall. Even though he plays hard, he is not at the level that we want.

Crowder, a sophomore then, also suffered last year for the lack of a DE coach. Dibbles had just lost a bunch a weight, and was playing his first significant time at DT (managing to make All Big 12), and the primary backup at DT, Okam, was a true freshman. You already know that Wright was injured all year.

All this was made worse by the fact that Robison likes the DL to hold their blocks and let the LBs make the tackles. The only time all year where he let the DL play their game was the second half of the A&M game. We ended that half with 6 sacks.

Fortunately for us Coach Chizik wants the DL to be aggressive all the time. The DTs are healthy and in the best shape of their careers, and the DEs have improved significantly with an aggressive young coach with fairly recent experience playing DE in the NFL. We also have great depth at DT, and a couple young rush ends we can put in in passing situations.
