Texas paper's thoughts on how to beat us..

Here's the game plan to beat Ohio State

<!--endtext-->
Knock me over with a feather, but Mack didn't ask. Didn't call, didn't write.
He's much too bashful to ask for help with his game plan, and all he has to do is surf the Internet or listen to talk radio or call up normchow.com to get a thousand or two suggestions for the game.
But if he had asked, this is the foolproof (though not necessarily Buckeye-proof) Game Plan 101 I'd recommend he use to beat Ohio State on Saturday:

•Give the ball to Henry Melton — often — and get out of his way.
This guy can rumble. His roughhouse, bruising style is perfect for this kind of game, a low-scoring affair in which the winning team will likely control the clock and field position.
When I asked the 270-pound freshman what the biggest difference is between high school ball and Division I-A football, Melton said, "The fans."
Well, there will be a few more of those for Melton to notice, come Saturday, but don't look for him to go slack-jawed. He's big-time ready.
With Texas giving the ball to Melton, Selvin Young, Jamaal Charles or Ramonce Taylor, the Buckeyes could be caught between Texas' version of Rock and a Hard Chase.
Those other three have the speed, but not the power that Melton does to pound away at the heart of the Ohio State defense. Feed him the ball a dozen or more times, Mack, and consider using him at fullback or in a two-back set.
It's true, as offensive coordinator Greg Davis said, that "you don't want to play 'em in a phone booth because they're very stout up front." But to spread 'em out and beat 'em in space, Texas may need to soften them up inside first.

•Do not punt a line drive to Santonio Holmes or Ted Ginn. If possible, don't punt to them at all.
Texas should sacrifice length for height. Kick it in the tuba section. Fake a punt. If forced to, shoot for 20 seconds of hang time.
"Twenty seconds?" asked an incredulous Richmond McGee. "This week that would be good. But I'll shoot for between 4 1/2 and 5 seconds."
I gave Mack the same recommendation in 1999 before David Allen came visiting. In truth, the Texas punter was supposed to kick the ball out of bounds but did not, and 74 zigzag yards later Kansas State had the back-breaking touchdown to forever alter the momentum. No opposing punt returner has gone all the way since.
Ginn poses a threat all by himself. He's a rich man's Reggie Bush, who will hurt but hopefully not kill Texas. I'm betting he'll line up at tailback a lot and throw at least one pass Saturday now that Jim Tressel woke up and thinks he is coaching the Harlem Globetrotters.
Texas needs to hold him and Holmes up at the line. Be physical with them. Knock them off their routes. Drop a linebacker or a down lineman into coverage. Check out the Texas Tech game tape, Gene Chizik.

•Get Vince Young off and running early.
Do it by design. He carried the ball seven times against Louisiana-Lafayette, only three on called plays with a draw and a pair of counters. When Young gets hit, it only seems to energize him.
Get it in the Buckeyes' heads early that Vince plans to run, and let it sink in that Young's breakout performance in the Rose Bowl was no fluke. See if Ohio State can tackle better than Michigan.

•Don't be afraid to try a trick play.
Hello, Greg Davis.
We understand this isn't Rice or Iowa State, but Bob Stoops made his reputation by gambling in seemingly dire situations, no matter the opponent. By pulling out a trick or two, Mack's players will know that this is a new Mack Brown who trusts his talent.
This is no time for conservative game planning. Rice is next week.

•Throw on first down.
That philosophy worked to perfection against Louisiana-Lafayette. Young was incredibly accurate (yes, against UL) when he completed 10 of 14 throws for 138 yards and one touchdown — just on first down. Keep 'em guessing, Mack.
Get Vince comfortable as early as possible with short curl patterns, but leave the East-West offense down South. The horizontal game won't work against defenses as fast as Ohio State's. Texas also must show it isn't afraid to go downfield four or five times, and one of the best offensive lines in its history ought to be able to protect well against an OSU team that had five sacks last week (yes, against Miami-Ohio).
Young has thrown more than 28 passes in a Texas victory just once, and that came in a 40-pass, desperate comeback on the road against Kansas. If he throws more than 30 passes Saturday, it won't be a good sign for Texas.
And one more thing, Mack. Take 'em one at a time.

Because it's ESPiN's version of the View. If they talked about the Buckeyes on Dr. Phil would you watch it?

HOMO

I'd watch if...if they have the band, coach Jt, buckeye fans in the background and a host who is buckeye fan.

I agree with you that this show is gay on any other day.... but it's the buckeyes man... i'll watch it.

I think it's funny on how teams will try to "avoid" Ginn and Holmes. That only causes other aspects of our game to open up (offensively speaking), and on special teams, not punting to them will yield excellent field position.

I like to always blame everything on John Cooper or Stanley Jackson, even to this day.

I'll just blame it on George Bush. Isn't EVERYTHING his fault? I hear he's even learned how to make hurricanes change directions so that they destroy cities that have minorities in them...

If you win the toss and choose the ball, the opponent chooses which endzone to defend.

If you win and defer, the opponent chooses to kick or receive (99.9% of the time they will receive) and then you choose which endzone to defend.

I thought you could win the toss and choose to defend a specific endzone. But that sounds dumb, because the other team can receive the kickoff in the first half and then choose to receive the kickoff in the second half. Nevermind.

We never really had to rely on krenzel because of the defense and MoC that year.

You just named Purdue, I'm pretty sure we relied on Krenzel's arm in that win. Anyone else think so?

Smith came into the michigan game having everyone in the nation thinking he didn't have the talent to beat them, and all he did was blow them out. You guys seem to be thinking that Smith performance of blowing Michigan out was a with no running game and no line was a fluke.

A Buckeye win is never a fluke!

But look at the passes he made and the clutch running it. Krenzel could never make some of the throws that TS makes because he doesn't have the arm strength or the accuracy and his run game was also better. Why don't you guys wait until he plays Texas and then give a response give the kid a chance behind a better team like Krenzel had. He hasn't had a chance since Michigan and guys believe me he'll be ready.

Keep in mind that Krenzel didn't have the greatest O-Line in OSU history too. There were times he didn't have 3 seconds to throw the ball.

I'm a Buckeye fan, born and raise, and will always be. Now you're making claims that we don't like/appreciate Troy Smith. That's just nuts, man. I'll never discount a Buckeye team. Smith is a good quarterback, I agree. This was meant as a fun post, and I think you're taking things way too seriously. I never said I didn't want to give Smith a chance; hell, I loved what he did last year! Krenzel won't be suiting up this Saturday, so why get so defensive about this?

Both Smith and Zwick are very good quarterbacks, whoever JT thinks will get the job done will get the job done.

That being said:

GO BUCKS! BEAT TEXAS!

Can I get a O-H!

exactally my feelings man. I really liked the show. The interview with Tressel was great and it just gets me even more hyped up for the game.
