"Team speed" is making it's case on hornfans.com as for how Texas is going to be victorious on the 10th. The gem of the thread was:

"Unless you have "Miami" on the front of your uniform, we will not be the least bit impressed by your speed. We are the fastest or second fastest team in the nation."

We played this team in 2002 with "Miami" on their uniforms. Forgot what the game was all about though, didn't think it was for anything important...

Longhorns eyeing shot at another Big 10 power

JIM VERTUNO

Associated Press

AUSTIN, Texas - On to Ohio.

After dispatching Louisiana-Lafayette 60-3, the No. 2 Texas Longhorns could drop any pretense that they weren't looking ahead to next Saturday's highly anticipated matchup with the No. 6 Ohio State Buckeyes.

And make no mistake, Texas is definitely looking forward to this one.

Still riding the wave of confidence created by last season's Rose Bowl win over Michigan, the Longhorns recognize that a win in Columbus makes them a clear favorite to play for the national championship.

"This has the chance to be as big as the Rose Bowl," said Longhorns defensive end Brian Robison. "This could determine the fate of our season. There's not too many chances in a life to play in a game like this."

It might not be quite that drastic. The out-of-conference matchup still leaves the loser with a chance to win the Big 10 or Big 12 and crawl back into the national title chase.

But even Texas coach Mack Brown is talking up what promises to be a special meeting of two powerhouse programs playing each other for the first time.

"It will be a fun game for college football," Brown said. "The buildup started in early spring."

And it's likely to continue all the way to Saturday.

Soon after Ohio State beat Miami of Ohio 34-14 on Saturday, linebacker Bobby Carpenter said, "Our goal is when Vince Young leaves here, he won't be a candidate for the Heisman."

Asked about that comment after he passed for three touchdowns and ran for another, Young said, "Let'em talk. I know if they focus on me, it's going to open up some opportunities for other players. When the game time comes, let's see what they're saying then."

The Longhorns' season-opener should give the Buckeyes plenty to think about. With Young spreading the passing around to seven receivers and with four running backs carrying for at least 65 yards, the offense didn't appear to miss a beat without Cedric Benson, the fifth-leading career rusher in major college history.

Jamaal Charles set a UT freshman debut record with 135 yards and a touchdown on 14 carries.

The biggest problem for Texas came in the kicking game.

Dusty Mangum, who kicked the winning field goal in the Rose Bowl, had to be replaced this season. Richmond McGee, the punter and kickoff specialist, took over field goal and extra point duties but missed three of his first four kicks. The last two were blocked, including one kicked so low it likely never would have made it over the line. Getting those three points could be critical in a matchup with the Buckeyes.

Other than those problems, Brown called the win the "perfect opener for us," one in which the Longhorns' won easily without having to use much of their playbook.

"We were really vanilla," said Ramonce Taylor, who caught two passes for 23 yards and rushed five times for 65 yards, including a 30-yard TD on a reverse.

Yet the Buckeyes are likely remain just as big a mystery. Justin Zwick completed 17-of-23 passes for 155 yards and a touchdown but he might not start on Saturday. That could be Troy Smith, who was serving the second game of a two-game suspension for accepting $500 from a team booster.

Texas linebacker Aaron Harris didn't seem to care much about who the Buckeyes start.

"We going to have a good time stopping them," Harris said.

...but in '02 Ohio State scored 45, 23, 50, 45, 19, 51 points respectively in the first six games of the season...

Actually, it was 45, 51, 25, 23, 45, 27, 50 in the first seven games (38 ppg), not to mention 34 against Minnesota in the tenth game...

[Wells] was in there with the backups

Not sure what would be expected from a true freshman...
I figured he'd have been in with the back-ups which skews things a bit. The stat lines I've seen were 7 carries|10 yards|0 TDs. Not a terrible debut, but not what I'd expect from someone I've been hearing was going to be a threat at RB.

Will Wells and Haw be factors in our game? Looks like a situation where they'd get 1-3 touches, at most, unless they have some success.

Can you say Duh? Who did you play again?

If UT's biggest problem is kicking the ball, then I'm putting my house on the line. The 'Horns would then be playing into Tressel's hand, and the last thing he needs is help. I just can't stress it enough, if UT plays offense, defense and NO special teams, there's gonna be a lot of pissed off Longhorns next Sunday.

Good for you, beating up U LaLa. The Ragin' Cajuns? I'm sure 85% of the team has family that has nowhere to live these days, and winning easily without using most of your playbook is ALMOST admirable. I'm sure the game was the first thing on their minds. I could walk over to my neighbors house and bitchslap their 5 year old kid, but I'd rather hide my playbook. Are you kidding me?

Have fun explaining how 60-3 doesn't matter anymore, when you lose your second game. It's fun beating up teams that can't compete, but it doesn't really help you much when the next team you play is better than your tackling dummies. Just an observation.

Just a final note here, most Texas fans (if not all) have been very knowledgeable, respectful, and courteous. I hope that each and every 'Horn that makes the trip is treated with the same class that each and every Buckeye would hope for in return. However, when we strap up those chinstraps, I don't think Mack Brown knows what he's getting his team in to. He better learn special teams, and he better learn them soon. Missing 3 out of 4 kicks is just gonna be icing on the cake for the Buckeyes. If Mack isn't careful, he gonna get his ass stomped, and may have a Buckeye leaf tattooed on his forehead a week from now.

Here is what I expect:

Facing the best defense the best defense that he will see in his college career, Young and his offense will be bottled up all day. They will be quite frustrated when they are unable to convert third downs and get less than 350 yards total offense.

I think we will spread the offense and that the running game will surprise Texas. I agree that Ginn will get more touches but I think that the offense will explode. Texas' secondary did not look very impressive against LaLa, they will be shattered by the Buckeye receiving corps.

Realistically, I think Ohio State leaves the game ranked second in the nation and that this game is less close than most people think it will be.

Wells' first carry came near the end of the opening drive of the second half, from the Miami 7-yard line, and he ran it inside the 1-yard line, barely missing a TD. Since ABC switched from the game after that, I can't comment on why he didn't fare better, but I'd guess it was because we were simply killing the clock...he looked good on that initial carry.

I honestly can't tell you which team has more talent; they are pretty even across the board when you compare them bit-by-bit. I give them advantages at Qb and the lines, but I don't think those advantages are as large as Texas fans would have you believe. The thing that would give Vince a huge advantage against some teams will not be a huge advantage against Ohio State. I'm just saying, despite the fact that "we have no idea what we are in store for with VY", the match-up against the Buckeyes' D is not that favorable to his game. I'm not too concerned with the Texas O-Line mauling our front 7, but I am slightly concerned about giving our QB time to execute the plays. Texas has good Lb and secondary play. RB's looked productive. WR's are a ? They've got a very good TE.

So, assuming the talent is pretty much even across the board, I think Texas is in for a long day simply because the game is in Columbus, Coach Tressel is on our sideline, and Greg Davis and Mack are on their sideline.

Ohio State by double digits.

Exactly, almost every single carry after his first Wells simply slammed it into the middle of the line for a minimal gain in clock eating duty. He had one run where he tried to bust it outside but got run down for a short loss. Obviously tackle to tackle isn't his strength right now, and he didn't get any oppurtunities on the edge where he would shine in my opinion.
