that is an interesting call, one theory is that you can afford to go after it because ginn can create on his own, but wouldn't you wnat to give him some blockers at midfield, tough call indeed. I don't know if I go after a punt all year if im am tOSU
You'd kinda have to every now and then just to keep the opposing punt teams honest. But yep, it would be hard to do.

When Michigan was punting out of their end zone we still put 10 men in the box with Ginn as the lone returner. A questionable play call for what might have been a blocked punt for possibly a TD...but with a returner like Ginn it's a pretty tough decision.

Actually we had nine in the box...someone on the return team forgot to report in and we were short one rusher.

long snapping has to be the most tough, thankless job on a football team.
I agree. Tough and thankless. You either do it right and thats it, or you fuck up and everyones on your ass.

Nobody (lazy bastards) confirmed my previous thought that PSU had blocked a Nugent field goal attempt, so I had to look it up myself. PSU did block a 49 yard attempt in last years game.

However, I am not going to expect blocked kicks in this game. Unless we get UT backed up deep in their own end of the field, I don't see us coming with a lot of pressure on most punts. Likewise, I don't expect UT to block any punts since we won't have to punt all game. Expect a lot of kick-offs, though.
You mean expect you guys to be punting a lot.

:wink2:

I think that call has to be made when there is a punter kicking out of his endzone (depending on other things, time of the game, etc.), screw the return there, at the worst you are getting field position at about the 50, but with a full rush on and the other team having crazy nerves, you can expect a lot better field position with a simple fair catch. Hell, if Das Shoe is as crazy loud as you all say, I would definitely be putting ten on the line, and tell Ginn to Fair Catch it unless TX overcommitted its blocking, and shoot everybody possible at our punter.

Somewhat related Q: did Ginn ever bobble or drop punts, etc.

Except as earlier noted that return came despite tOSU only having 9 on the line.

against UM, Ginn was hit upon catching the punt, but like usual, he danced his way out of trouble. (watch the return here, you gotta be registered on the site to view this link)

He got hit right after catching it, and still almost took it for the distance. Much like you are used to with Vince, defenders rarely get a clean hit on him.

Its an interesting debate to be had about Ginn, which is relevant to thsi thread.

On the one hand, there is no doubt in either camps mind about the ability and sheer magic Ginn can bring to the return game. On the other hand there is some doubt I hear about Ginn's receiving skills, plus there is a reasonable concern about the increased attention Ginn may draw now his skill set has been seen far and wide.

I just wonder if both points of view are not giving Ginn enough credit.

He only played in half the games last year. Coach Tressel has made it clear that getting the ball into Ginn's hands in many different ways is a priority this year. How this will happen is another matter entirely. I doubt we know all the staff have planned. Based on past pre-game strategy it is doubtful the media will have seen too much of what Tressel really has up his sleeve. Could it be that Ginn's stats on 9/10 will surprise many by their gaudiness?

Its an interesting thought.

just fanning the flames a little (given that jreal didn't think we let our best guys go full contact during ST returns in practice)
"I like the kick scrimmage. It's a lot of fun," said Salley.
"We just run around, knock each other down, talk trash. We have a lot of fun with it, then the loser has to walk home, so the guys who are on the bus kind of look out the window and mess with you while you're walking home to the Woody, so it's kind of fun. We compete and have a lot of fun with it," Salley said.

nitpicking a little, but I think that he actually said that its fine if yall go 100% on in ST practice but by no means is that the only way to do it, or even the "normal" way. I think that he was just trying to say that he doesn't have a problem with the way that mack coaches ST as much as the players he uses on them.

Exactly! To each his own. If you guys go full speed kickoff return and avoid injury, more power to you. I've always played on teams that played it a little more conservative in that aspect. Full contact on kickoff coverage would be more of a punishment. It's hard enough to avoid the injury bug already. OU just lost one of their starting DE's in a tussle with very little contact I believe. Here's to both teams staying healthy for the 10th.
