Game Thread Game Two: #1 Ohio State 24, #2 Texas 7 (9/9/06)

- Who would have thought 15 years ago we'd win in Columbus, they'd win in Austin?
Ahem - I don't know about 15 years ago, but it was one scenario that crossed my mind after last years game (and there was precedent with OU).

Anyway - the "out-of-context" stuff on comebacks is nicely defused by Brown in that interview.

For those with an interest he now has the full transcript of the Press Conference selectively quoted by ESPN on the main Texas Football web-site.

Nice read, and a very respectful tone.

Game Day coaching - please someone tell me why Texas went away from the run when they were gashing our D on the option? Did we adapt so well, or did they change direction of their attack? Bad decision.......

:gobucks3: :gobucks4: :banger:

that seems to be the prevailing opinion; however i think it must be noted that Texas didn't abandon the run after the first quarter, which seems to be the perception...yes, the Horns gashed the Buckeyes D early, gaining 93 yards rushing in the first, 30 of which came on one play... however, the Buckeyes Defense began playing a little better on the edge after a couple series, and the Horns only netted 81 yards rushing the rest of the game...

first quarter rushing looked like this: 11, 3, 12, 13, 9, -1, 12, 30, 4... 9 carries for 93 yards, and a whopping 10.3 average.

second quarter rushes looked like this: 5, -4, 4, 2, 3, 3, -1, 0, 4, 2... 10 carries for 18 yards and a 1.8 yard average. if that doesn't jump out at you, i don't know what will. the Horns didn't abandon the run. the Silver Bullets shut it down.

third quarter rushing looked like this: 4, 7, 17, -1, 6, 5... 6 carries for 48 yards, and an 8 yard average... however, they were down ten at this point, so there was a little more urgency, but i don't think you could consider the run to have been abandoned. obviously they had one good run, but for the most part, the Silver Bullets simply were making tackles, and waiting for the other team to make a mistake... take away the 17 yarder, and the YPC average for the 3rd quarter was 5 carries for 21 yards, and 4.2 YPC... not exactly 'gashed.'

fourth quarter rushing looked like this: 9, 2, 3, 12... now no one will even attempt to state that the Horns should have still been running, especially after the Buckeyes took 6:30 off the clock and opened up a 17 point lead...

my assesment:
this is vintage 2002 'bend but don't break, keep making tackles, and eventually the other guys will screw up' defense, and i have to say that i love it... who freaking cares if the other guy has a million yards as long as they aren't getting in the endzone...

Having tried to sift through the last 25 pages or so of the "I told ya so" from the Buckeye supporters (only saw one Texican - EH say congrats), I will add mine, as the thread seems to have taken a turn my way.......

alot of texas supporters have given their congrats. many in a seperate thread than this one. there has been a lot of banter since the game and a lot of those who did post their congrats in this thread are probably a little further back. with the exception of 1 or 2 horn fans, i think all of them have posted at some point someplace. very classy group :).

Game Day coaching - please someone tell me why Texas went away from the run when they were gashing our D on the option? Did we adapt so well, or did they change direction of their attack? Bad decision.......

id say both really. the running attack was working everywhere but the score board. time was running out and the bucks were scoring. my guess is mack felt he needed to do something quick as time was starting to run out. the time changes really do limit how long you can stick with an attack that isn't netting immediate success points wise. and our d was getting better and better against the run albeit MUCH slower than i would have liked.

Going one-on-one with Gonzo didn't work, so let's double team him and then go one-on-one with with the Buckeye Superstar, and maybe they won't notice.......Bad decision.......

and if it had been gonzo on the corner in 1 on 1 coverage burning their #3 cb? we'd all be saying the exact same thing. they took a chance on d and it didn't work. can't say as i blame them. if i had to take a chance on d i think im much more likely to go 1 on 1 with my #1 guy vrs their #1 guy. expecially when their #1 guy has 1 or 2 catches rather than their #2 guy who has almost a 100 yrds already against my #3 at best guy.

My 'I told ya so" - along with the predicition that it would be decided along the lines, was that Tress was a better game day coach than Mack.........well folks, we've just seen proof positive of that. We adapted and when Texas tried, they got scorched.......Our chessmaster is at least two moves ahead of the competition.........

id say jt is 1 and 1 against mack chessmaster wise. everyone likes to talk bullshit about how mack can't win without vince. well newsflash for the world. we took vince away after the second drive last year and mack won. people can doubt mack however they choose. but imo he prooved himself last year that he can get the job done. he adapted to what the bucks gave him and called the perfect game against our d. a d that i didn't honestly think anyone could beat. *shrug* he did, simple as that.

and in an unrealted note. i completely agree with him on the time changes. i think its absolutely obsurd and completely unacceptable that the change was made. to be perfectly honest, im shocked that others don't feel the same way. these people are limiting the game in order to pad their revinues with commercials. how about they remove a couple commercials and let the kids play for a flippin change? oh gee im sorry. THE GAME people are TUNNING IN FOR is taking too long and driving people away you say??? riiiiiiiiiiiiight..

isn't that like making beer bottles smaller because sometimes they don't get finished and claiming people like it better that way?

Thanks Vegas Buck.......great breakdown. Our LBs will only get better....we'll see if the Texas boys implode now that VY isn't there now to bail them out. Their change of game direction may be attributed to OUR change of game direction. The Buckeyes came up with a 'fix' to counter their options.......they couldn't counter with their own fix.

Great job Heacock and co. (Again, the game day coaching of Tress & Co)

Thanks also Martinss01......you were responding as I was.......I like your analysis as well, as thanks for 'clearing away the fog' from the Texicans who have been bantering back and forth. For an opposing team, you're right, they are a good group of people. As I said, we're not alot different, just on the different side of the fence.........

Thanks again. Hopefully we can all banter with others with a high amount of character and class...........I do know that our posters dealt with ssome of their 'flamers' with professionalism, and I hope others do also......

Go Bucks. :gobucks3: :gobucks4: :banger: ( I do so like the 'banger')

Band Helping Troy Smith?
Did anybody else notice in the second half that some of the Ohio State band members were standing in front of the LED sign on the West side of the North end stands? We were seated in the South end and noticed Troy Smith was throwing more passes on this side of the field. Perhaps he told the coach it was bothering him.

That's a bit of a reach, no?:slappy:

Here's the post game breakdown of the OSU-UT game. I haven't had time to read/watch it yet but thought you guys would appreciate it too.

"I'm not sure what the refs could have possibly seen on the roughing the passer penalty. It wasn't late. If it was "helmet-to-helmet," that's even worse. Helmets touch at some point on nearly every tackle. Outside of Oklahoma, humans walk upright. Their heads generally touch at some point on a collision. It was actually great defense by Ohio State that gave Texas the ball 1st down near the goal line."
