Game Thread Game Two: #1 Ohio State 24, #2 Texas 7 (9/9/06)

I know you won't respect my answer, but Selvin Young is going to be 100% healthy, and he's going to get alot of carries.
Why is he going to get alot of carries? From what I saw last year, Charles is a far better back. As someone (sorry, can't remember who) said several pages ago, Charles seems to be a special kind of player.

That was me...From what I saw, he was one of those backs that if he found that little crease, it was going for a long gain. You had to play smart against him and bottle him up with your help...I remember him breaking a really nice long TD run right up the middle in one of the later Texas games that was televised up here (Colorado maybe?). He's the next great Texas RB IMO...

Charles is going to get more carries compared to Young, but not by much, maybe(spelled maybe right) like 50% Charles and 40% Young 10% The big boy Melton. If he stay's healthy possible 50%. Don't forget Young is an excellent receiver out of the backfield. Im sure the other Horns may have a better feel for question

I agree totally. He's the one player on their offense that scares me in this game. One missed tackle and he's gone. Hopefully Texas will take UTMNC's advise and just throw quick slants to the best receivers in the nation, and ignore the best player on their offense.

The run you were thinking about was against Oklahoma....an 80 yard run straight up the gut

Selvin Young - great highschool back, came to texas and pushed Cedric for playing time. Got on the Mad Dog weight program, got too heavy became injury and fumble prone(one not really the fault of the other) Came back at the end of last year looking faster, leaner, and better than anytime since his freshman year. That said, I will believe he can stay healthy when I see it. Even at full strength he isn't Jamaal Charles, but that doens't mean much since on tallent alone I would say Jamaal is a top 3-5 back in the nation(re: not based on anything other than the eyeball test) I love having the option of bringing in Selvin and he has tremendous character. He is a great Longhorn and represents the program well.

As far as PT goes next year, well selvin is a senior, which under mack brown means, tie goes to the experience. Selvin will get plenty of snaps because he is an elder statesman at this point. If he shows that he still has fumble-tis like he did earlier in his career then expect his caries to dwindle as the season goes on.

those are my thoughts, I think that there are more than a few programs that would love to have selvin as their every down back

your thoughts on Selvin?
Sorry to answer the question directed to HL, but my thoughts on Selvin is that he will be better this year, as he was coming off a pretty bad injury last year, and never really seemed to be at 100%. He seemed to get better as the year went on, however, he also had a case of the fumbles, which is something that I worry about with JC as well. Anyway, the flipside of SY being better recovered, is that after his injury his 100% might not be close to what his 100% was preinjury.

The guy has been through some ups and lots of downs during his time at UT, and even was quoted as saying that he thought about entering the NFL draft after last season. A lot of people look at him as one of the possible leaders this year, he was Vince's roomie last year, so maybe some of the leadership rubbed off on him. Last year at one point, in one game, can't remember if it was tOSU or another one, JC fumbled (offense recovered) and Mack pulled him for SY, as JC was running off the field and SY on, SY stopped him and gave him a quick pep talk before joining the huddle. Pretty cool sight. SY also realized what a threat JC was for playing time as he declared that he couldn't talk to the media last spring and offseason because he had to put all his effort into his workouts as JC was competing for his starting position. Lastly, SY also was in tears of joy after the Rose Bowl victory, which was a bit touching, as I said, he has been through a lot.

Of course this last paragraph amounts to a hill of beans if he doesn't produce on the field, and he should be a very solid backup for JC, but a backup in the Horns backfield seems as if he will get 30-40% of the carries, and possibly gain a ton of yards in the second half against the weaker opponents.
