Game Thread Game Two: #1 Ohio State 24, #2 Texas 7 (9/9/06)

Who will be returning kickoffs alongside Ginn this year?
probably gonzalez, he was always the #3 KR/PR last year. He does not have the wiggle of Ginn, but his straight ahead speed is better in spikes. I would imagine that Maurice Wells, Erik Haw, Malcolm Jenkins and Ray Small wold also get a look at returner.

You're right, UTMNC.

Looks like this sucker has slowed down a bit, and I need some entertainment on a Friday afternoon.

We talked last year about how the teams UT and OSU played before (UL-Lafayette and Miami (OH), respectively) our game prepared them for the big game. A few people opined that the OSU, having played a superior Redhawk team, has an advantage going into the game, because the coaching staff was more aware of what did/didn't work.

This year, UT plays North Texas (Kathy Ireland is their kicker) and OSU plays Northern Illinois. Again, it looks like OSU has the tougher opponent. Although NIU looks to have lost a bunch of players, save for their running back. And while OSU will have Wolfe to deal with, UT has to go up against 2004's leading rusher, Jamario Thomas.

Sorry to answer the question directed to HL, but my thoughts on Selvin is that he will be better this year, as he was coming off a pretty bad injury last year, and never really seemed to be at 100%. He seemed to get better as the year went on, however, he also had a case of the fumbles, which is something that I worry about with JC as well. Anyway, the flipside of SY being better recovered, is that after his injury his 100% might not be close to what his 100% was preinjury.

The guy has been through some ups and lots of downs during his time at UT, and even was quoted as saying that he thought about entering the NFL draft after last season. A lot of people look at him as one of the possible leaders this year, he was Vince's roomie last year, so maybe some of the leadership rubbed off on him. Last year at one point, in one game, can't remember if it was tOSU or another one, JC fumbled (offense recovered) and Mack pulled him for SY, as JC was running off the field and SY on, SY stopped him and gave him a quick pep talk before joining the huddle. Pretty cool sight. SY also realized what a threat JC was for playing time as he declared that he couldn't talk to the media last spring and offseason because he had to put all his effort into his workouts as JC was competing for his starting position. Lastly, SY also was in tears of joy after the Rose Bowl victory, which was a bit touching, as I said, he has been through a lot.

Of course this last paragraph amounts to a hill of beans if he doesn't produce on the field, and he should be a very solid backup for JC, but a backup in the Horns backfield seems as if he will get 30-40% of the carries, and possibly gain a ton of yards in the second half against the weaker opponents.

Sounds like SY is one of those "locker room" guys that every team has got to have to keep the team's head on straight. Also seems he may have found a soft spot in the Texas' fans' heart. The way I see it, you've got to have the "pair and a spare" at RB. It sounds like you guys have that with Melton in there as well. If I remember correctly Melton is the "power" guy? How would you rate these guys in terms of catching passes out of the backfied? With a young QB, it always nice to be able to dump the ball off quickly behind or over top of the pass rush. It could be a very important part of your game plan in this game IMO...

I have debated back an forth in my head about whether it would be more advantagous to have a UNT type game or maybe a Mizzou calibre game. I think that I have decided that this is one time i would rather play the little school and run up the score(or at least attemt to). However, I am affraid that mack will do like he normally does and call off the passing attack in a blowout even though our qbs desprately need the attempts

I agree that this year I would rather face a softer opponet in game 1. Let's see what we need to see, the STAY HEALTHY. One thing is for sure, even though there have been some blowouts with NT in the past, they have talent as you mentioned with Jamario Thomas, and they don't just come to Austin for the paycheck, they play hard. Please NOOOOO Injuries.

Melton, given his size, should be the power back. However, he's very agile for someone his size, which at this point I think is a bad thing (as weird as that sounds). As y'all saw last year in our game on the option pitch from the 1 yard line, he tries to use his speed and agility to gain yardage instad of his size, and that gets him in trouble. I'd honestly rather have 190lb Jamaal Charles in a short yardage situation than 270lb Henry Melton. I'll take it a step further, I'd rather have an agile, quick, 270lb Henry Melton at defensive end and not at running back at all, not even on a situational basis.

Charles is very good catching the ball out of the backfield. Probably the best of the group. Selvin Young is pretty good as well. And I don't think Melton has ever caught a pass or even had one thrown at him in a game, so there goes that option if he's in. Another reason I'd rather have JC in when Melton goes in.

As far as UNT goes, I'm also thinking I'd rather face them than a better team. I think Mack is still going to call the game like it's close if we get ahead by a lot. But we've never really been in this situation before, so who knows.

I know one thing, I give BuckeyePlanet an A+ for the way they run their message board forum. As is already well known, NOBODY is more enthusiastic, or optimistic about the 2006 UT team as me. I don't think I will ever be mistaken as a closet Buckeye, and you can be pretty certain the closer we get to Sept, the odds of my BANNED FOR LIFE status here on BEP will increase dramatically, but it is enjoyable to have a forum where one can debate with the opposition in a fairly civil and rational manner with poster's who are very knowledgeable of their team and are willing to let guest from other school's give their arguments without being shot out of the water as soon as it even look's like homerism. Wich more Big 12 Boards were like this, including hornfans.com to some degree. P.S. See ya'll, my spelling is somewhat improved (not much) when I haven't been drinking Scotch all day.
