Game Thread Game Two: #1 Ohio State 24, #2 Texas 7 (9/9/06)

Mr. H2O Award
Frank Okam, Texas
Gaines Adams, Clemson
Both were very good in the water games and helped their teams with great effort.

It's an article about a Playboy AA team. Couldn't they have called it 'Water Sports'? :tongue2:

Yeah, I'm curious about that too. I also remember something about many Browns fans are also OSU fans (and vice versa) but that's not the case with the Bengals.

*Nonsensical attempt at goofiness caused by boredom*
By the way, if I was a Browns fan, I would call the Bengals the "Bungholes" (Bengals--->Bungals--->Bungholes). Or if I was trying to work on my British cockneye, the "Sphincters". Of course, that might be the pot calling the kettle black since the Browns are....ummm....the Browns.

Ok I remember now....whats with the OSU hatred in Cinci? Penis envy?
Who knows? But here's a history lesson that tells how deep that resentment used to run ...

Back in the 60s & 70s, Gerry Faust used to steer all the Cincinnati Moeller talent to Ara Parseghian and Notre Dame, much to Woody Hayes' chagrin. Faust's record as a Cincinnati area high school varsity coach was 174-17-2. He sent everyone to Notre Dame. Cincinnati Moeller recorded a 53 game regular season winning streak from '72-'78, meanwhile, in this same time period Notre Dame compiled three 10 win seasons and won two national championships.

Faust, Cinci HS Football, and Notre Dame were joined at the hip for almost three decades, so much so that Notre Dame actually hired Faust after the Dan Devine era came to an end in 1980.

Faust famously threw away or hid other programs' schollie offers from his players and told many of them Notre Dame was the only program that was even recruiting them. I've read books and recruiting tales from former Moeller players about how Woody would drive down to Cinci himself to hand deliver his offers because he despised Faust's influence over the kids, and knew that Faust would throw many of the offers away, or else would only steer the kids that Ara Parseghian didn't want or wasn't interested in to Woody. Woody was basically getting Notre Dame's seconds from one of the deepest talent pools in the state.

As a native Cincinnatian (is that right? San Diegons?), there is very little love for Ohio State in the Nasty. The state school there is apparently Notre Dame, UC, or Kentucky. The Cincinnati Enquirer doesn't find it necessary to post anything Ohio State as news. IIRC they didn't put the NC game victory on the front page, or something rather egregious like that.

Cincinnati Moeller, Princeton, St. Xavier, and Colrain used to send more talent to Michigan than Ohio State, which is kinda sad considering the proximity to Columbus. Things are turning around as Tressel has effectively built up a brick wall around the state borders. Whats weird though is that at my high school, more graduates went to Ohio State than any other school (including UC and Miami).

Getting a scalped ticket might have just gotten a smidge easier. UT just announced the addition of 3000 bleacher seats in the south endzone. While I'm sure it'll look like shit, at least there's more tickets.

We're now looking at about 87,000 total attendance now.

63,000 something, though children weren't counted so it could have been closer to 70,000.

To follow up on what you were asking about Bengals and Browns fans...heres how the old adage goes. In the state of Ohio, we can all be Buckeyes, but when it comes to professional football, we are all collectively losers. Waiting to take a piss at the 'Shoe at halftime, you'll find drunken fans screaming "GO BROWNS!!! YEAAAAAH!" and then someone retorting "BROWNS SUCK!!!! STEELERS RUUUUUULEE!" And then someone screams "WHO DEYYYY?!" And I just shake my head while a tiny piece of me dies...

Did y'all seriously have close to that many at your spring game?
I dare say that the stadium was more full by later in the 2nd quarter

While I'm sure woody was none to pleased about any Ohio player or school not first looking at tOSU, I don't think Woody was completely disappointed with players going to nd.

Per the fiesta bowl announcers, Woody would actually steer(notice how I use this word in a texas thread) players to nd to prevent them from going to tsun. I think the quote from woody was something to the effect of "I'm nd's number one recruiter." The announcers went on to say that the religious atmosphere in Columbus put Woody in a position of not wanting to play nd in order to prevent a divide in the people of Columbus.

Will that be under the huge hidef tv? If I'm getting inside the stadium, I want to be able to see that thing without turning around.
