Game Thread Game Two: #1 Ohio State 24, #2 Texas 7 (9/9/06)

Sorry, no disrespect to your coaches, but they cannot possibly "know" that Snead is "smarter about reading the defenses than Simms, Mock or Young were" until he faces the Texas defense in practice. The best high school defenses pale in comparison to even the worst college defenses.

Sorry Mililani, but you do realize that Snead is currently enrolled in school and practicing with the team, don't you?

In that case, yeah, I think the coaches do have a good impression of him, and I can vouch with Randy from first hand experience about Snead's competency at this stage in the game compared to other guys we've had. If you didn't know it, you'd think he was a redshirt sophmore or something with the way he runs the offense. That and the fact that our defensive schemes have become increasing more complex and up to date since the retirement of Carl Reese following 2003, thats even more encouraging with these guys in comparison to what we saw with Simms, Vince, Mock early on. Nonetheless, its all a pissing contest until September so we'll take it for what its worth.

I just saw that tonight on SportsCenter's preview of the team. Still, neither of them will have more than one game--against North Texas at that--under their belt when they face us. If you thought Vince Yong saw pressure last year, wait until Heacock turns the blitz loose against totally green QBs...

run up 250 to 270 yds between the tackels, no prolem.

You guys are being far too diplomatic!

ScarletnGrey is on the right track. With only two Dmen back, it is fortunate for OSU that it's the Mighty Quinn and Patterson. I think Pitcock has a breakout year, hopefully like 'Big Daddy' had. Texas loses three of their six O-line (including their TE), and they were drafted on the first day. That said, I don't think Texas will be able to bypass Quinn and Patterson to get a hat on our linebackers. True, they will not 'gel' by Texastime, but Northern Illinois is a straight ahead running team that will get them ready for the stuff up the middle. Our LBs have speed, AND experience, (expecially if Kerr, D'Animal, and Freeman are the starters). Their big problem will be keeping them at home (there's where the lack of experience will show up).

Texas has some young studs at RB, and young'uns at QB. If our D-line occupies a couple of blockers each, our young ends can pursue, forcing the Longhorns to keep in one of the backs to block rather than swinging out. If we can't get pressure on the freshmen QBs, then the might have some success, as Texas HS football is probably equal to NAIA level.

Our DBs will be the crucible. They are fast, can cover, but will be overly aggressive, eager to make a big play, and can (and probably will) get burned, especially if the pressure is weak. The Texas offense will go for some short out passes, because their O-line won't be able to hold off for long.

Hey HL, does either of your RBs have any QB experience? My biggest fear is they start the sweep, our Safeties bite, and they pass over their heads (a la Randel El in SuperBowl).

OSU 34 - tu 14

Regarding Texas' O Line, I'd remind you that we return the top players in our rotation, with the exception of Jonathon Scott. The other two guys, Will Allen and Mike Garcia, while solid players, were never truly stars, and I don't believe were drafted. The beef of the lineup, Scott notwithstanding, include C Lyle Sendlein, G Kasey Studdard, T Justin Blalock, and T Tony Hills. All of them have all-conference ability and a few All America; as many have mentioned before, Tony Hills was considered a no-drop-off backup to Jon Scott. Scott is a little taller, longer armed, and more experienced, but Hills is no doubt stronger, better techniqued, and just as athletic. We feel good about this unit being as strong or stronger as a whole than last year's group, so that would infere there will be limited "pushing around" of our boys by the tOSU D line, good as it may be.

The battle up front will be the headliner of the matchup, make no mistake, but this could be a great opportunity for the Texas' O Line to establish their identity, and their dominance, in the post-VY era, for everyone to see. You can bet they will be itching to prove their worth to the nation, and I expect nothing less than full execution.

And neither QB will face a better defense this coming season than they one they face in 30 formal and 100+ informal practices between January and September.

Well, on paper it looks like your defense will be better but on paper Notre Dame's schedule looked like it was going to be brutal last year. We'll see which one is better once they actually play some real games.

since they are looking to knock out your QBs, who surely haven't seen similar defenses all year. The offensive coordinators don't know the defense like a book, and UT practices are just as stressful as THE national matchup of the year.
