Does he have the talent to? Yes.I think I'm damning him with faint praise, but he seems more like a medium-level threat. Troy Smith and Ginn are the ones that make you hold your breath when they have the ball. Of course, Pittman could have a breakout year, but do you expect Wells to come in and wrest the postion away this year?
Will he? No.
Tressel loves his upperclassmen, and I don't think has shown any frustration over the current state of the running game to resort to changing any of his strategies right now. We don't need a "great" back to get Ws, just a "very good" one who can pull their own weight, and most importantly under Tressel, pass protect.
Wells has the upside to be a truly "great" back, but I don't think there's the urge or need to throw him out there like Clarett in 2002. There are several capable RBs in the wings already.
