Game Thread Game Two: #1 Ohio State 24, #2 Texas 7 (9/9/06)

lvbuckeye said:
well, YV had more total yards, more TDS, more wins, a head to head win, and didn't disappear for about 3/4 of the biggest game of the year. in fact, VY won it nearly single handedly, while reggie wasn't even on the field in the most important play of USC's season, that being the 4th down play with a minute to go.

Reggie won the Heisman bacause he had 513 ALL PURPOSE yards against fucking fresno state. the media hype machine proceeded to suck his dick for the rest of the season, without bothering to notice that VY had a 500 yard performance of his own just two weeks prior.

finally, don't play dumb and act like the Heisman is REALLY about the best player in the country. it's about the best looking player on a great team. there's a reason that Brady Quinn has an inside track on that trophy, and a reason that Marshawn Lynch needs to rush for about 2500 yards and 30 TDs to to win it. shit, if it really went to the best player in the country, or even the most valuable, then Chris Gamble should have been a lock to make the trip to the downtown athletic club in '02.

(BTW, the Butkus is a PENN STATE award. is it any wonder that they gave it to their guy?)
Reggie Bush won it because of the things he could do. Nobody looked at his all purpose yards and said "Damn we gotta give this boy an award!" They looked at his highlight film and their jaws dropped.

If you're going to call him out on playing Fresno, then you might want to go take a look at Texas' schedule last year.

Finally, Reggie was facing a much better D than VY. Their head to head means absolutely nothing.

VY can hang his has on tOSU for one, and Okies D last year wasn't too bad either.

fair enough. i'm not arguing that he didn't make plays, or that he wasn't any good. i'm arguing that the guy who became the first player in NCAA history to throw for 3,000 and rush for 1,000 in the same season (averaging 100 schools and 100 years each, that's TEN THOUSAND collective seasons in which NO ONE accomplished what VY did) was better.

If you're going to call him out on playing Fresno, then you might want to go take a look at Texas' schedule last year.
i'm not calling him out for playing Fresno. i'm saying that his 513 yard performance against Fresno sealed the deal. when you factor in VY's relative clunker the next week, in which he only lead his team to 40 points, the fact that VY had 567 yards againt Ok St that same month was completely overlooked.

Finally, Reggie was facing a much better D than VY. Their head to head means absolutely nothing.
the head to head means nothing to you because Reggie didn't do shit in the Rose Bowl... and VY put on a performance for the ages. the fact is that on the nation's biggest stage, one guy personally took his team on his back and carried them to victory, and the other guy stood on the sideline while his running mate got the call on the biggest play of the year.

if you want to argue against that, then fine...

The statement quoted above is the point of my argument in the earlier post. You were calling out the "D"'s that VY faced vs the D's that RB faced. I would think it would be obvious that VY played the better D's over the length of the season....

I am not arguing that RB's performance wasn't extraordinary, just that I thought VY's was better.

Let me throw this on the wall and see if it sticks.

It is much easier for a quarterback to have over 500 all purpose yards than a running back who returns kicks. Vince touched the ball on every offensive play. Even most of there handoffs included the option of him running the ball. Reggie Bush got half the touches as VY (and had another 1,000 yard back on the team) and still put up over 500 yards in a game. Not to mention that a good day at the office for a running back is 125 yards rushing while for a quarterback is 300 yards passing.

Now who is going to clean that up?!?!?

Were they playing the same defense? Were they even playing similar defenses? uh, no.

Last I checked the head to head did count a little :wink2:

for the record, I'd vote for VY, and find it stupid that the heisman is awarded before the bowl (see 04 beatdown of Jason White).
Were they playing the same defense? Were they even playing similar defenses? uh, no.
bingo.
the head to head means nothing to you because Reggie didn't do shit in the Rose Bowl...
rushing: 82 yds, 1 td (6.3 ypc)
receiving: 95 yds, 0 td

Lendale is a big back, and had been dominant against the undersized Texas LBs before that play. I would use Lendale every time for a short yardage play, even if I were playing hawaii. Kudos to texas for a great stop.

Also, I have said it before on this board and it looks like I will again.

I am fine with Reggie winning the Heisman. He had a great season and is a phenomenal play maker. I feel like timing was as much of a factor as anything. The one HUGE problem I do have is the fact that it was the largest landslide victory in the history of the award. That, to me anyway, is a slap in the face.

You mean the Jamaal Charles that averaged a staggering 67.54 yards a game (78th in the country), and ran for an eye-popping 2.6 yards per carry against us?
I agree that the Jamaal for Heisman talk is a little far fetched. Not necessarily just because of his lack of heisman caliber ability, but because:
1. he will be sharing carries with what everyone seems to think is a vastly improved Selvin Young,
2. UT's QB play is suspect at this point, leaving opposing defenses more room to focus on stopping the run,
3. he is a sophomore, and no sophomore RBs, or any sophomores at all, have won the Heisman in the past, and becasue of reasons 1. and 2., he won't be able to have a season so incredible that voters will change their mind and vote for a sophomore,
4. UT's schedule is weak, and UT would probably have to go undefeated for any of their players to garner the Heisman talk,
5. Jamaal had too many tweaks and soda-drinking related injuries last year 6. he hasn't proven that he can hold on to the ball, and
7. ESPQuinn.
